when I copy and paste bits from pdf to word, the formatting of paragraphs is wrong and I have to go through each line to put it right.

You could try paperless printer its free for personal use, but I have had some mixed results with it. Works well from Visual foxpro though and can output in various formats including RTF and Excel

If you have a gmail account you could e-mail it as an attachment to yourself and one of the options is to view the attachment in HTML which you can then copy and paste with the formatting intact.

Usually works for me anyway.
