There is a house in NetherEdge, it's big, it's fairly scruffy and I always have to look at it if or when I go past.
Give you a clue it's not far from the hotel St. George

The building at Blonk St which is the centre bit of the one way system. It has (had) a carpet shop on the front. The large section at the back was originally a multi-storey car park for horses and carriages. I hear it's to be rejuvenated - probably more yuppy flats (sorry apartments) but if it stops it being pulled down then v good.

If you mean the side that faces Lady's Bridge then that's some of the best frontage in the city. The tiling's superb.

Do you mean by design? Its aesthetic value regarding its surroundings? Or best by the fact that its windows are covered in metal grilles and the front garden has become the local dump-yer-fridge site?

I think the Sheffield Cathedral looks nice when lit up, as infact does the Town Hall. And hopefully the City Hall will look good when finished.

But best building per pro? I can think of many. Starting in town, howsabout: Ha! Ha!, The Corner House, RSVP (okay, truly awful building but...), All Bar One, Sportsman, Brown Bear, Yates's, Matrix, and all these just on a Wednesday afternoon.

Infact, come on guys and gals, which is your favourite DAYTIME drinking hole in town?

I've always loved the Crucible Theatre actually. I like the way you enter through a fairly small area then it opens out inside into a huge space that sweeps up and round.

Unfortunately, it has suffered greatly from ad hoc additions over the years. What was once an immense, uncluttered foyer space has been filled with a sweet kiosk here, piles of tables and chairs there, and it has become very messy. Clearly, there's a problem in that when it was being designed, theatres weren't places where you went and hung out during the day - they were just theatres. The Crucible was one of the first to present a building that was a destination throughout the day, and they clearly failed to plan the space adequately.

Plus, additions like the new front doors are hopelessly unsympathetic compared to the large glass originals with their long stainless steel handles.

I believe that there's going to be some major work done on remodelling the front-of-house areas sometime in the near future. I would hope that they would be able to accommodate essentials like kiosks and storage space in such a way that the vast interior spaces are returned to their original splendour.

As for the auditorium, I've always loved it very much. They should just make sure that those hundreds of light bulbs get replaced promptly when they go!

Ponds Forge Leisure Centre is a really nice building. It is immense both inside and out - doubling up as a nightclub & sports centre. It's in a great location too, seen from the main city roundabout with it's leisure pool slides coming in & out of the building.

What about the Oriental Buffet near Ponds Forge, either Angel or Commercial Street. I think today it's the No 1 Buffet or something but IMHO it should be a top notch hotel facade as it is a wonderful looking building (especially having been cleaned up).

Also, last summer I had to take my car in to be serviced at the bottom of Ecclesall Road. I decided I would walk back to work and then later return, on foot, to collect the car. I was amazed at some of the beautiful buildings - mainly houses - there are in the Broomhall area. I walked through Broomhall and up through Weston Park and really enjoyed looking at the designs of some of the buildings. And I'm not particularly on about the larger houses; some of the terraced housing is really interesting.

So, get out on foot, something I am doing more of instead of sitting in a queue of traffic wathcing my stress levels soar through the roof.

Can someone just break their silence and just tip us off about 'that house' in Nether Edge. Now if it's one of them ruddy great Victorian mansions that hasn't been split up into flats then I'm guessing it's probably on the greener side of Nether Edge into Brincliffe territory.

Or is it that lovely old cottage behind a steep wall next to the Merlin Theatre?

The house at netherEdge is big with a large very overgrown garden, it has what looks like original second world war blac-out curtains at the upstairs windowsand downstairs the windows have internal wooden shutters which I've never seen open ever. Most of the paint has gone off the wood and the front double door has stained glass leaded panels inset. On the top of the house providing light to the upper landing and staircase is a large circular raised sky light.
The huge wrought iron gates leading into the grounds are slowly rusting away and from the road you can make out a range of what look like garages or old stable houses at the rear.
AND I STILL WANT IT!!!

p.s. It's not near Brincliffe Edge

Definately, the town hall. Really beautiful.

Some of the buildings in Attercliffe too are really impressive once you get past some of the crummy shop signs, which suggests that it was once a v affluent area. Can anyone elaborate?

Some of the buildings, like Banners department store, do suggest the area wasn't as run down as it is now, and may have been quite posh. The same thing applies to the Wicker too I think, some of those buildings are very grand.

Yeah... I'll bet the Banners Dept store was really plush, and there's another one a bit further up which is now a graphic designers.

I think it's really sad that so many beautiful buildings in the city are run down and/or hidden away - there's some behind the city hall, which are lovely (part of the town hall?)

converserly i think its great how sheffield has loads of 'high streets' that run out ofd the city, just loads of areas with shops and bars, fulwood, ecclesall, london roads all great.

Even in darnall theres a great building, actually might be the one Miss is talking about.

A lot of these buildings are bank branches, I think 100 years ago banks put a bit more effort into designing their branches to impress potential customers (would HSBC build Corinthian columns on the outside of a bank these days ?).

AndrewC
21-12-2004, 15:21
Look at the small branches at the top of fargate, pinstone street and ecclesall road - all plain white and glass!

I was in the main HSBC (cashing 300 10p's!!) and while it was a great building inside and out you couldn't help but notice how small it was compared to its equivalents in Manchester and London.

According to This Site (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/planning-and-city-development/planning-documents/spg/historic-parks-and-gardens-spg) "Spring Leigh, Netheredge" is looking like its going to get renovated by the council

Don't remember Banners as being 'plush'....my school uniform was bought from there because they were even cheaper than the Co-Op, and half the price of Cole Bros :D

If you mean the white building on the corner of Attercliffe and Staniforth Road, - that was a Burton's. - tailor's shop downstairs and snooker hall upstairs. Their shops were built to a fixed pattern pretty much nationwide.

Nor do I remember Attercliffe as being 'posh'; in it's hey-day it was a large and busy shopping centre but the customer base was essentially working class.

In case you haven't seen it, have a look in the Pevsner guide to Sheffield's architecture. Handy 10 quid paperback from good bookshops and fits neatly in your coat pocket.

Every page is full of interesting buildings that you've been walking past for years and never noticed. Also includes suburbs. Bloody wonderful stuff. I bought it as a xmas pressie today but I'm keeping it for myself!

Many thanks for your instructive comments.

I'm quite aware of the location of Telephone House and Eldon House as I have often worked in both of them. The GPO Building on Flat Street too I am very familiar with; I think my first aquaintance with it would have been around 1948.

I have no idea what the building I'm referring to is called these days, but it used to be 'Telephone Buildings', although we always used to call it the 'Old Telephone House'. In fact it was on the top floor of this building that the first automatic telephone exchange in Sheffield was installed in 1926, and it also served as the admin centre and offices of GPO Telephones until the current Telephone House was opened in 1972.
