Hi, I remember Miss Meahan - strict PE teacher!
Was the Gordon3 the same Gordon I remember so well? Hall ? !!
You posted a message a few months ago asking about old friends - well this is Margaret Haywood. Yes I do remember Barry Fairhead and the others you mention - wish they'd get in touch on here with us!
For those remembering if they knew me, I left Huntsmans Gardens after the 11+ and went on to Hatfield House Secondary so that would be 1955-59. Brilliant memories of Mr Lowe who was my class teacher in 4th year. Funnily enough I found my report from that year only yesterday, dated 17th Dec 1959! Worst subject Religious Ed - 26 out of 100 -disappointing!! Best Biology 32 out of 50 - shows improvement!!
I have been in touch with some old school mates through Friends Reunited and thats good. Anyone around today?

gordon3

Hi Gordon, yes me too, was just tracking some ancestor's ward record and got stuck, so thought I may find some help on here - then got diverted with the Attercliffe stuff!!
Yes its a pity we cant catch up online now and again with old mates. I would suggest a reunion but I guess you wouldnt want to take that on!!

gordon3
17-01-2010, 17:49
hang on margaret started to get excited reading about a reunion great stuff but then got a bit jittery when i read the bit i guess you wouldnt want to take that on lol
would you like to organise it i would be pleased to come along

Tangerine
17-01-2010, 18:04
To be honest, i dont know where to start, although my daughter and her schoolmates have a reunion quite often!! So it cant be that difficult to organise. I thought you were in Australia? Could you really come over?
I shall have to think about it. What do you think then?

Hello everybody went Hatfield from 64 to 68, friends were Phil Staniforth, Allan Bratley, John Hill, Steve Fox and Gary Elmer. Teachers were a Mr Jennings geography, Mr Bradbury maths, Mr collins sport and Mr White science. Once saw Mr Collins drag kid to the heads office, he had caught the lad smoking in corridor. He probably would be done for GBH nowadays. The head was Mr Whitfield he had a cabinet with a range canes for every occasion.

I remeber Mr Jennings and Mr Bradbury "Brad" was my formteacher when i started there ages 11, in 1970. Cant remeber whether it had changed to Firth Park then or whether it changed just afterwards. I was one of the last year to go there aged 11 from then on it changed to "Comprehensive" and all new kids were 12 when they came to the school, perhaps that when it was renamed Firth Park ??? Went to Hatfield i & J too, remember Mr Smilie and Mrs Jessop. If you went to Firth Park/Hatfield, you must remeber Spike, Mr Johnson, lovely man, one of those people you never forget, but for all the right reasons!

Ok not sure if this thread is still going but I went to Hatfield House Lane and left in Dec 1962 in the days when you could leave as soon after 15 that a holiday fell.

Was in Mr. Bradbury's class in my last year and had been scared of him in the years before we got in his class but he was great. He made you sit boy - girl to stop gossiping (not sure what he did not stop though!). I remember once a friend had left her bag in the aisle and he picked it up and dropped it out of the window onto the terrace below - her bottle of ink smashed and everything was covered!

Remember Mr. Jennings too - had him for Geography - he would mark my work well even if every other word was spelt wrong (dyslexia was not heard of then!) and we would play country, county, town and he would give the winner 3d for an icecream at lunch time. The only time he got mad was one day when the class was next door to him and we were waiting for our teacher to get there. A girl walked past and Michael Longley whistled - Jennings came in asking who it was, well he did not own up and no one snitched and he said if they did not own up he would cane all the boys - Michael did not own up, no one snitched and they all got caned! Can you imagine doing that these days!

Lots of memories, not all pleasant but the majority were and that is what matters. My two younger brothers went there was well - bused it from the Cliffe. Dorothy Walker nee Sidaway

I remember a girl, perhaps a little older then me and walking with her pushing her baby brother Michael around the block in the pram - thought it was great as I was never allowed to push my baby brother!

Hi Dorothymwalk.
it sounds like my cousin Valerie pushing pram her younger brother is michael
and they live on Titterton st bang across from school buildings if you stud with your back to school and looked at houses they lived in last one first block, think it was 21, next to was it telephone exchange. I lived there up untill 3 years old . 1955 to57, can remember standing at bottom of entry and waving at Val in school. happy days. but may not be her but nice to have happy memories brought back.:)

dorothymwalk
12-12-2011, 19:08
No it was not her - this girl lived on the opposite side of Britnall Street and near the very end away from Britnall street, I cannot remember her name but do know it was not Valerie.

So if your Valarie lived next to the telephone exchange she might have know Alf and Edith Walker, their daughter Joan Walker, although she is a bit older then me and may have been married by that stage and living on chapel Lane.

On the other side of the telephone exchange would have been the Majors - Brian, Elaine and Marion not sure what order!

Thanks

Dorothy

Went To School In 5o's And Was In Same Class Together Did You Know Us Brian Shaw And Jean Quibell Married 43 Years
Hi jeanbrian
I was at HHL from 1953 to 1957 so I was a couple of years ahead of you. I'm sorry but I can't recall you or Brian.
I started in 1A and Mr White was our class teacher. What a lovely man and great teacher. Even though he picked out me and a couple of mates for three strokes of the cane on the backside straight after assembly just about every morning he was not malicious and he had a great sense of humor. He introduced us to the arts, literature and poetry. I can't recall who were my class teachers in 2A and 3A. I must have floated through those two years in a haze. In 4A my class teacher was Mr Battersby. He also tought us English. I vividly recall him come steaming down the eisle, after I had answered "I don't know sir" to his question "What is an adjective", his eyes blazing, red cheeks glowing and moustache bristling. He came up nose to nose and roared into my face "an adjective is a DESCRIBING WORD" I've never forgotten what an adjective is. But for all that I loved my time there. The PT teacher was Mr Kirkby who was a great guy. I was in the school basketball team. Some of my mates were Jeff Butler (Head boy), Andy Astill, Bobby Wass, Bobby Knighton, Roger Nichols. Sadly Jeff passed away many years ago. Some of the girls I knew were Florence Gibson, Cynthea Perkin, Eileen Mc Manus, Anne Spicer, Wendy Gill, June Eyre. I also recall the girls PT teacher Miss Jarvis. All the boys loved her. Two girls you may have known were Sylvia Gibby, who was also a neighbor of mine and Elaine Upton who was a friend.
Miss Meehan was new to the school but she taught my wife at St Vincents prior to moving to HHL.
It's been great reminiscing.
Cheers
