I can't remember much about his playing career (apart from what I've read), but he was ace on Question of Sport.

Just heard the sad news regarding Emilyn Hughes. A fabulous guy who Sheffield took to its heart. His wit, his kindness and above all else, his strength to try and fight his illness which sadly, was to be one battle too hard, will never be fogotten.

God Bless you Crazy Horse. Let's hope you can watch your beloved Liverpool FC from heaven.

RIP Mr Hughes, I dont remember his playing days either but do remember watching him on a question of sport opposite Bill Beaumont, he was really funny and was infamous for putting his arms around his two colleagues.

I also remember the famous day at school when we played against Emlyn's son's team and Emlyn turned up to watch from the sidelines. I remember scoring a penalty and kept looking at Emlyn to see if he thought I was any good!! LOL:P

My mum met him once at a bar.

He was playing for liverpool at the time, she said he was really friendly with no ego at all talking to normal people that he met at the bar.

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE!
Rest in Peace Emlyn

Yes. Now all we need is Elton John warbling his way through it at the funeral.

Anyone for cheese?

I think he lived at Whirlow, he has lived in Sheffield since the 80's when he had a spell as Rotherham manager.

I expect his funeral to be in Sheffield.

Emlyn Hughes? Over-rated in my opinion. He played for the red-sh*** and captained England during their worst ever post-war period. I believe that they failed to qualify for two world cups under his leadership. My only abiding memory of his Question of Sport captaincy is his brown-nosing of Princess Anne. This is unforgivable in itself. The fact that he was a nice guy is by the by. Plenty of "nice people" die in Sheffield every day.

Interesting mango, you don't really care for the guy, yet you insist on opening a thread about him, and slagging him off. Please do that on another thread, it's not really relevant to this one.

Anyway, for anyone who's interested, here are the funeral arrangements:

The funeral of Emlyn Hughes is to take place in Sheffield Cathedral at 12.00 noon on Wednesday, 17th November 2004. The Dean of Sheffield, Very Revd Peter Bradley, will lead the service.
Everyone is welcome at this thanksgiving for Emlyn Hughes' life.

In place of flowers, mourners are asked to make a donation to the Emlyn Hughes Cancer Appeal at Weston Park Hospital. Donations should be sent to John Heath and Sons, 2-16 Earsham Street, S4 7LS.

The Dean of Sheffield commented, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Emlyn's wife Barbara, and his two children Emma and Emlyn Junior."

"He was a much-loved figure throughout the country, in particular in the City of Liverpool. After retiring, he came to Sheffield and received the same adoration - for his boundless enthusiasm and the way he helped the people of South Yorkshire with his tireless charitable work. We are honoured to be holding this service in Sheffield Cathedral," he added today.

The service will include Emlyn's favourite hymns and a tribute from a fellow Liverpool player.

A book of condolence is available in the Cathedral.

I'm not sure about this. From the matches I seen him involved in on video for Liverpool he seemed like player who was full of energy up and down the pitched involved all over the place. A player like this would be worth millions by todays prices.

I didn't suggest that you STARTED the thread, just that you OPENED the page that the thread was on. Again I'm baffled why you decided to look at the page in the first place just to make a point that you didn't care much for the guy. A bit pointless really.
