I would have thought that if they advised you that all would be well with Vista and then don't deliver its a fair reason to cancel with no penalty. Buying just a router wont help your modem problem either - you would need another modem or a modem router (combined)

I agree, under the sales of goods act you told them you had vista and they told you there would be no problem, there is and so it is thier liability. Ask them to provide the modem/router FOC or you will cancel.

While I agree with the previous comments, there are other advantages to buying a router anyway.
Improved security, ability to share your connection and option to go wireless spring to mind.
Places like eBuyer ( http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/cat/Wired/subcat/ADSL-Modem-Routers ) have a wide choice.
Just make sure that you get an aDSL router, as this will have the modem built in (so you can ditch the Thompson one) rather than a plain ethernet only one.
This assumes, very likely as you have Vista so have a modern machine, that you do actually have an ethernet port on your PC. You can't use USB to connect to a router, unless you use a wireless USB dongle of course.
