View Full Version : Old Morrisons Building Darnall
DAVEGARY 09-11-2004, 04:55 Does anyone know what is happening with the old morrisons building in Darnall.
It is the largest building in Darnall and looks like it will stay till it falls into disrepair what a crying shame!!!
I think i read where the people of darnall were finally going to have a supermarket there.
cant remember which one.
but i remember seeing the article.
can anyone else help here.
The giant ASDA is only up the road, 5 minutes by bus.
NatalieSheff 09-11-2004, 09:07 they should knock it down and start again, its scruffy. if it opens as supermarket, itll have same probs as b4 - major shoplifting

Maybe the residents of Darnall dont want to get on a packed 52, squeeze our way round Asda and then get on another packed 52 bus...
I've heard that Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, the Co-Op AND Tescos are moving in there, so take your pick!!!!

I'd walk to ASDA if Aldi was the alternative, not that I'm a snob or anything but Aldi is a scummy dump.
But, each to their own.

Too right mate,i would rather risk my life pram dodging in Meadowhall to get to sainsbury's than go to Aldi!
BoppinBruce 06-04-2005, 13:55 May have been covered before, if so I apologize, but what is to happen to the old Morrisons Shop at Darnall Terminus. Since it's closure many other shops have closed leaving a feeling of a ghost town. OK so there is a Morrisons down the Parkway, but my in laws are old and they do not drive. To visit Morrisons Darnall was an 'adventure' where they could do a spot of shopping and meet other people their age in the area.
My father-in-law met a person he went to school with when he was 8 years old, they are both 82 and it was the first time they had seen each other in that time, and instantly recognised each other. It's a small world.
Kristian 06-04-2005, 14:05 Not sure what is happening with the site now, but I can throw some light on why it closed, and was built as one of the smallest Morrison's ever.
The store closed as you suggested because of the proximity to the new store at Catcliffe.
When the store was planned, it was to be roughly twice the size it ended up. Morrison's had bought the next 'block' also, and had planned to build across a small public highway to create a large store. Planning permission was refused for this, so they had little choice but to cut their losses, and build on the bigger plot. This is what I was told when I worked for the group many moons ago anyway!
Laura2005 06-04-2005, 14:48 i heard a while back it was going to be a netto
Cutglass 06-04-2005, 14:49 Last i heard via Sheff Star was that Lidl had taken it over
Cutglass 06-04-2005, 15:05 Kristian, did you actually work at the Darnall more-reasons? or another store, only asking cos I worked at Darnall one, only for a year '03, but wondering if i know you.
I did read that someone was taking it on, but can't remember who exactly. That area certainly needs something.
garryh69 06-04-2005, 17:04 lidl have bought the site and are going to demolish it and rebuild a bigger store, i think that all the shops on that block are going as well such as oxfam as morrisons owned these buildings also.
hubby was in the library the other day and saw plans for a lidl so yes this seems true. since i have a shop 2 mins away from it we get lots of folks tickle tackling about what it was supposed to be , folks have said , netto, coop, sainsbury, iceland, and like market place where all different shops would all have there own stalls < heehee> these folks new this for certain too, having got various family or friends in *the know* ;)
as for ghost town, yes it certainly has become a lot deader since, the pound shop a few doors down says he has seen a considerable drop in trade. and the shower shop next door is hardly ever open, even the domonatrix above us has stopped trading... leavin me with a right drop in sales of nag champ incense :|
Found this on the Council website from September.
Morrisons Site
The Chair stated that Morrisons had now sold the site to Lidl Stores who were in the process of preparing a planning application to submit in order to redevelop the site.
In response to concerns regarding the Chemist, Members believed that the Chemist would remain. With regard to the recycling facilities Members suggested that residents had expressed their wish for the recycling facilities to remain during the consultation period before Lidl submitted their planning application, which would allow Lidl to incorporate the existing recycling facilities in their planning application.
BoppinBruce 06-06-2005, 13:33 There is scaffolding up at the old Morrisons at Darnall Terminus. Its at the loading bay. My father-in-law is asking me whats occuring, cos he knows the forumers know everything, so I am asking you. Anyone got any ideas

How does that work? You buy a tin of somthing for your tea but don't know until you get home whether it's spagetti hoops, mushy peas or dog meat? :help:
Its definitely going to be a Lidl - they have flattened the site because it was cheaper to knock it down and put up a new building than renovate the old one (heard that from an ex Morrisons employee). I think the new building will be in the style of the Lidl at Stocksbridge if anyone has seen it.
Liz
Greybeard 28-08-2005, 12:02 Lidl is good, much better than Netto. We often go to the one in Stocksbridge rather than Tesco on Infirmary road.
