View Full Version : Meadowhall being overrun!
WonderSheff 08-11-2004, 23:35 I am probably going to sound really bad here but i have been to meadowhall and noticed it as been over run with Asians. There were thousands of them today. Everywhere I looked there were loads of them.
Has there been an event on or something for Asion people today near meadowhall?
WonderSheff 08-11-2004, 23:36 No doubt I will be classed as a rasist now!
Naw, I wouldn't class you as a racist.
You noticed something, so what?
It's if you had a problem with the fact that, according to you, there were many asians in Meadowhall....
I think it's being more overrun with pushchairs.
goldenfleece 09-11-2004, 07:56 Over run with scallies, pikeys, chavs and tracksuit bottoms!!!!!
RunningFree 09-11-2004, 08:01 I was there last night as well. There were hundreds of them.
I know I'm going to sound very old here but, when I was a kid on holliday from school we found more interesting things to do other than hang around shopping centres all day.
When the little darlings are on holliday now you can't shift for them in Meadowhall, what do they do there all day ?
Yodameister 09-11-2004, 08:15 Ummmm, shoplift?
goldenfleece 09-11-2004, 08:23 They hang about in little groups (posse) and swagger and swear a lot....its all about the SWAGGER and the go' large-ing it' look.....and and a lot of "Yo man" and "Yo budd" lingo, mixed with " she's reight fit that bird" and "Look at the jugs on that" from the male element. The female element just utter "Look at the state of that" to the males.....and wagle their 30 ft diameter gold ear-rings and tighten up their greasy pony tailed hair.
David Attenborough...get the cameras to Meadowhall for some REAL Sheffield wildlife in their natural surroundings as they search for prey and indulge in obscure mating rituals. "YO MAN"!

Goldenfleece,

"Asians" as in Indians and Pakistanis, or Asians as in Indonesians, Malays, Japanese and Chinese etc?
Don't forget Sheffield is a HUGE English language learning centre (Or so I was told a couple of years back). I used to work near West Street, and every September and October, it used to be heaving with students from Asia!
Many of these students have loads of cash, which can only be good for Sheffield (or good for those shopkeepers at Meadowhell :hihi:)

Well you are clearly using the word "overrun" in a pejorative sense. I think you would be hard pressed to argue that you are not being racist.
deanprez 09-11-2004, 10:13 Let's hope they don't be too offended by the CHRISTMAS trimming's !!
NatalieSheff 09-11-2004, 10:16 please tell me you guys are taking the mick?
Yodameister 09-11-2004, 10:28 In my opinion any self respecting Christian should be offended by the outrageous commercialisation on Christmas.
It is a ridiculous smear that Christmas decorations casuse widespread offence amongst other faiths.
NatalieSheff 09-11-2004, 10:33 im off to diwali celebrations on 21st, went to arabic dancing on 8th oct and a chinese clelbration in sept - love it! spread the love - what are all these celebrations about? socailising and eating (oh and religion)
Yodameister 09-11-2004, 10:35 Christmas shopping has got absolutely sod all to do with religion. If I was a Christian I would be incredibly angry about what Christmas has become.
Okay, to be fair, Christians did hijack the new year celebrations originally so it cuts both ways.

What Pagan festivals has it replaced ?
I fancy having a Pagan holliday this year (I'm hoping it involves beer).
Yodameister 09-11-2004, 10:44 I don't know a lot about Pagan festivals, but I do know that there was a festival at that time of year before Christianity arrived.

Now this is not a total stab in the dark. Pagan festivals are generally celebrations of the movements of the moon and the sun. Therefore it would be wise to assume that Christmas coincides with the Winter Solstice.

Interesting thought - my friends mother is a primary teacher at a school in central sheffield, and was told that they werent allowed to refer to the christmas tree as a christmas tree this year, it had to be an "end of term tree", so as not to offend anyone.
im sorry, but its a christmas tree!! :) ]
And why does this keep crashing when I try to post it!! :( Ive probably posted it 9 times now! :(

I'm not suggesting these directives do not exist. What I am suggesting is that noone was offended in the first place.
The only people who benefit from this sort of publicity are racists who can say look how stupid all those trendy do gooders are, so I am a little suspicious as to the origin of all the fuss.
NatalieSheff 09-11-2004, 11:09 thats like saying you cant say Amen. or you cant say black board or something

I couldnt agree more. No one is offended but people are so scared of being tarred with a racist brush that they go over the top and do things like I mentioned. Im sure no one would care what a tree was called, but some headteacher was so worried about offending someone, that he/she decided to do something which in reality is stupid.
Is it me or is the world turning too PC.
If i walk down the road and see alot of asian people and think that theres more then normal i would say that. It doesn't make you racist.
It's the same with everything. Whats the world coming to.
NatalieSheff 09-11-2004, 11:23 apparently its acceptable to say paki now, just as brit, aussie, yank is used. not sure if this feeld comfortable though.

True......but I wanted to get that down in writing for a good laugh. Yo...
i wonder if calling someone a chav is chav-ist? :)
The only reason there were loads of 'Asians' in Meadowhall was the fact that it was the Indian celebration 'Diwali'. This is like their Christmas and instead of wasting money on killing trees and giving out millions of cards, or giving presents that will be unwanted after boxing day - they hand over money to spend.
You will also know in your wisdom that Eid day is almost upon us, people are predicting this Sunday but it's down to when the full moon is seen. Therefore there may have been Muslims doing their Eid shopping - this is a celebration of the end of fasting or Ramadan, which you will know also, has been going on for the past month.
This is probably the reason why there were more than your average influx of 'Asians' in Meadowhall.
I try to avoid Meadowhall during December myself - just a warning to those who might not know but it's full to the brim of white people during this time!

Too right, buts what wrong with stating that. If it's a fact it shouldn't matter!
I know, thats why Im stating it. ;)
NatalieSheff 09-11-2004, 11:39 good one! ive got diwali on 21st am honoured to be attending, have met some ace people over the last 2 months, from asian / black mixed community, thanks to my job.

Glad to hear that you enjoy working with 'people'. They are humans after all aren't they. This is it you see - you can at least say that you get on with people and dont really look at what colour they are - no matter how many you bump into.
Some people are over-awed by seeing a few brown people in a certain place at a certain time! These are the people who really need to get out abit more, mix abit more and communicate abit more.

what is the 'normal' number of Asian people? Is there a quota?
eg
less than 5 - ok
5-10 - ok but not everyday
10+ - overrun.

LOL:hihi: I suppose it depends on which part of Sheffield you're in. I've had friends tell me they parked up on Whirlow Road to let the car engine cool down and before too long a police car stopped them and asked why they had been parked on the road!
Someone had seen 1 asian and phoned up the cops!!
Alot being more than average.
If you see alot of pigeons in town you do not need a quota to gauge wether there is alot.
It seems people try to make people seem racist for even mentioning that someone is Asian. The beauty of living in a multicultural society is that we can speak about our different cultures.

The Trafford Centre do not allow anyone Under 16 into the centre unless accompanied by an adult. Any groups of kids are removed from the centre by security staff in bright red jackets who's job it is to remove them!
Meadowhall could do no worse than follow this if you ask me!

superted666 09-11-2004, 12:08 I personally cant stand the fact that people are afraid to comment on anything to do with race as they fear they will be branded racist.
I saw a advert for a program today that was about 3 asian ladies looking for a boyfriend and its called only asian or something like that because they were after asian boyfriends only.
If i said white only BANG im racist.
People should chill out and just talk about it like they do short / tall people or posh people. Society is diverse and its OK to talk about it!!!

the reason why there were that many asians in Meadowhall is beacause this weekend see's the end of ramadan (fasting). Muslims celebrate this thro Eid (Muslim christmas) where they buy presents and clothes.
So hope this answers ur question

I't not quite accurate to say that Eid is the "Muslim Christmas", Christmas is when Christians celebrate the birth of Christ.
Ramadan is the holy month of fasting for people who follow Islam.
Eid is a celebration (one of 2 called Eid) to mark the end of Ramadan.
Muslims believe that the month of Ramadan is when, historically, the angel Gibreel (Gabriel) first began passing on the holy scriptures that became the Qur'an to the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh)

I don't see how handing each other money to spend is better than the exchanging of presents. There is no thought involved, and they may as well just agree with each other to not exchange £20 notes and just spend it on themselves anyway (i.e. "here's your present brother...£20 just for you".... "thanks sis, and guess what? Here's your present - £20").
Don't belittle our own culture just for the sake of being PC - I for one enjoy the personal thought and effort that goes into choosing gifts for others, and receiving gifts that people have thought about is good too.

fierysatsuma 09-11-2004, 22:03 Did anyone see on the news about the shopping centre that has 'banned' santa this year - due to it causing offence to other cultures?
What is a racist?
If I went on holiday to(or even went to live in) to India, Pakistan or any other asian country -I would be expected to respect their customs and religion. I would'nt expect people to cancel Divali or any other festival for fear of upsetting me.
personally, I'm sick of walking on egg shells for fear of offending someone. "hey lets cancel xmas altogether - as long as it pleases an asylum seeker on his way to claim his benefits for his family"
If being upset about not calling a christmas tree a christmas tree to please a minority is racist - then so be it, I'm a racist, and proud.
It isn't the minorities, such as Muslims or Hindus, that take offence at people celebrating Christmas. Infact I know Muslims and Hindus that exchange Christmas cards. All of these silly ideas of what might cause offence are dreamed up by the PC brigade who think they are doing good, when in reality what they are doing is causing resentment and furthering divides. I can just imagine them all sat around a table in colourful wooly jumpers and sandles, dreaming up the next over-PC idea.

Black/Asians can call us names under ther sun but they are nether Racist! We say "Pakki" and we are racist!!!
Banning Father Christmas and the use of the term Christmas Tree is it racist or is it religionist?
Another little story for you...
When I was a student, I was looking for house to rent for the next term. Saw a nice one, but the sign in the window said "Asian students only". Thats plain wrong. Racism works all ways if you ask me. Imagine the bricks through the window if you advertised a house for "white people only".....
Equality is a great idea, but it must be equal on all parts.
I wont even say what i think of letting women in clubs free but not men!! Sexist! I think so!! ;)

The trouble with this sort of 'story' is that it tends to have very little truth behind it, yet it serves to get those who resent multiculturalism foaming at the mouths. Hence, your reasonable post descends into prejudice as you write about asylum seekers and benefits (which, for the record, they are not entitled to by law - but why let facts get in the way of a good rant?)
If councils really are banning santa, then that's obviously daft. But is it really happening, or is this sort of thing just an embellished non-story designed to shift a few more parochial newspapers?
I think we should ban Christmas, it just seems to cause trouble these days... i still believe it should be renamed 'Funmas' and it can be a time that people of all nationalities and religions can come together and celebrate the birth of Santa (with a change of costume so that coke don't get an unfair useage).
There will be lots of drinking, lots of gifts, and lots of food. We can have Funmas trees, Funmas pudding, Funmas crackers (that actually go bang). We will have midnight mass in every pub in the country, where anyone who wishes can go and say the Holy Funmas prayer of 'go on then... just one more'.
Above all, no religious shows on TV. Just mindless silly fun that wont cause people to argue or start wars or carry out horrible acts in the name of some false idol.
How many people have every started a war over Santa, eh?
And, we could have Funmas in July, so the weather will be better.

I fully agree that it's not the minorities who object but I disagree with you as to where the ideas come from. It's far more likely that it's be-suited newspaper editors who come up with these scare stories and time after time people swallow every word. My reasoning? We never see any proof of these assertions. Check out the thread about the racist horse.

I thought the purpose of this forum was to make things up to increase the fear and loathing of 'them'.
Well I for one will decorate my home with the usual tree and trimmings and even though my kids are growing up we will still wait until Christmas day before opening gifts.
I bet all our foreign students/visitors/residents love to see how we celebrate our own festivities. Lots of events for them to enjoy just as we would if visiting their countries at special times of the year.

As a Muslim, I'm not offended by English customs. Just as well really, since I've spent all my life in England.
Christmas and Easter are (were...) part of the Christian faith, which I took great enjoyment in learning about at school, along with other faiths and cultures.
Flying the St George Flag at international tournaments...it's the flag of the country and all its citizens, myself included. Why would I be offended? One of my American work colleagues has a flag of the stars and stripes on her desk. So what? Does that mean she voted for Bush? Of course not!
I do take the stories of Asylum Seekers and others being 'offended' by pictures of Santa Claus etc with a pinch of salt. I'm not saying these stories are a myth put out by right-wing subversives, but I've never been told why they cause offence to these foreign nationals.
It does not bother me to see people of any nation who have pride in their country, provided that 'pride' doesn't follow through into violence against non-nationals. In fact, if more people took pride in their countries, perhaps they'd keep their streets cleaner and their towns safer.

In fact, if more people took pride in their countries, perhaps they'd keep their streets cleaner and their towns safer.
top post there abdul i agreed with just about everything you said there
