DynoDon 22-04-2007, 16:38 ................................ JFKvsNixon 22-04-2007, 16:51 I remember at the last presidential elections in France, a lady was holding up a placard saying "vote for the crook, not the fascist" And we think we have it bad in the UK. craigmason 23-04-2007, 07:54 Sarkozyis is right-wing so hopfully he will do somthing to stop the immigrants coming across france heading for the uk nick2 23-04-2007, 09:37 Sarkozyis is right-wing so hopfully he will do somthing to stop the immigrants coming across france heading for the uk Or incourage more of them to leave France and come here, thought of that ? Rivelin6 23-04-2007, 09:48 Quote "Sarkozyis is right-wing so hopfully he will do somthing to stop the immigrants coming across france heading for the uk" And your point is???? Immigrants make for a diverse and interesting community. In my life time first there was prejudice against the Irish coming here, then black people, then Asian now people are blaming Eastern Europeans for all our ills. We are all immigrants that came here from elsewhere, it's the history of our country. When will people realise that and stop looking for differences. That's what causes conflict in this world. Greybeard 23-04-2007, 09:49 M. le Pen came fourth, - no surpise with an 85% turn out. It's only ever apathy that elects rabid racists. Greybeard 23-04-2007, 10:04 And your point is???? I think you'll find that immigration numbers into the UK over the last twenty years are quite unprecedented in our long term history, and it isn't surprising that people are concerned about the effect this is having on society. And the largest influx of the Irish occurred during the 19th. century when technically Ireland was part of the UK. Darbees 23-04-2007, 10:07 M. le Pen came fourth, - no surpise with an 85% turn out. It's only ever apathy that elects rabid racists. That's a very interesting and true observation. I'd be surprised if there is such a high turnout on 2nd run although the womans supportere have everything to gain and are more likely to turn out than Sarkys and so if she doesn't win the gap may be closer, the actual gap between them being about 15% if the votes for other candidates are disregarded. mikey10 23-04-2007, 11:06 all politics are going to the right. trouble in the future. Rivelin6 23-04-2007, 12:02 The black population of Britain(inc Asians) still only stands around 12 % so why are people so concerned. More people leave than come here. Anyway the sooner we are all mixed race the sooner racists won't have a leg to stand on. Mathom 23-04-2007, 12:12 all politics are going to the right. trouble in the future. Quite the opposite it seems in France! Following the poor result for Le Pen, it seems fascism is at last finished in France. He will be dead soon, and without a 'personality' to vote for those dwindling numbers who had been voting for him will soon go back to the various other parties. Darbees 23-04-2007, 12:32 all politics are going to the right. trouble in the future.Depends how far it goes, it's clear that the electorate don't want it as far as Le Pen and there is a long way between Sarky and him. As in this country Socialist policies are proving not to work in practise as is the case in this country and the high turnout speaks volumes for that. liquid_pig 23-04-2007, 21:54 so would i so you would vote for a racist? evildrneil 23-04-2007, 22:22 Whoever wins is going to have a very tough job with the state of France at the moment. If I were casting my vote there I think I would probably go for Royal though admittedly more from gut feeling from my very limited knowledge than anything else! angle20 23-04-2007, 22:22 Quite the opposite it seems in France! Le Pen's daughter may take over: Marine Le Pen (http://medias.lefigaro.fr/photos/20061222.WWW000000811_14009_3.jpg) So maybe not all over yet. ;) Mathom 24-04-2007, 07:42 Le Pen's daughter may take over: Marine Le Pen (http://medias.lefigaro.fr/photos/20061222.WWW000000811_14009_3.jpg) So maybe not all over yet. ;) Not quite the same thing though - I mean, if you were a Thatcher fan, would you vote for Carol if she stood for parliament? :P I think what the far right underestimate is that the vast majority of ordinary people, both left and right, despise fascists and will turn out to vote against them if there is a threat of them succeeding - in France people turned out in higher numbers because of the scare they had last time with le Pen being reasonably successful due to voter apathy - they gave le Pen a trouncing. You also find in this country that fascist councillors rarely hold on to their seats - this could also have a lot to do with the fact that they are full of polemic before election and yet may as well not have bothered whilst in power! liquid_pig 24-04-2007, 08:38 nazis trying to get into power in france.Ironic isn't it angle20 24-04-2007, 09:32 Not quite the same thing though - I mean, if you were a Thatcher fan, would you vote for Carol if she stood for parliament? :P Marine Le Pen is an MEP so not quite comparable. As for Carol Thatcher, she seemed to do well enough on I'm a Celebrity... Mathom 24-04-2007, 09:44 Marine Le Pen is an MEP so not quite comparable. As for Carol Thatcher, she seemed to do well enough on I'm a Celebrity... Heh, I think ol' Carol doing well on 'Celebrity' was down to her being a polar opposite to her own mother! And she's known not to like her very much, too, which will have gone down very well indeed! ;) |
