It depends what the file extension is. I presume you're asking because you can't unzip it?

DvdShrink is quite easy to use - it's just a matter of changing the box selections to "custom" instead of "automatic" and setting your own compression rate to enable your dvd to fit onto a recordable.

I use Nero to burn it, but any dvd burner will do.

Smartripper - rip dvd to HD
DVD2one or
DVD95Copy to shrink, or rip out extras...
Record Now Max - burn

tried and tested, best combo going ;)

xafier, thanks for that. I've never found DvdShrink 100% reliable.

DVD Shrink is great and it's 100% free. Since DVD-Rs only store around 4.7gb and actual movie DVDs can be up to twice this amount, something obviously has to be done and this program compresses movies to fit on a DVD-R whilst still retaining much of the quality. You can also choose to not copy things like foreign audio/subtitles or useless extras to save space.

'Shrink' is a bit of a misnomer as something like dvd decrypter has to be used first to get round the copyright protection. Clonedvd does exactly the same thing i.e. 'shrinks' to fit the film on a standard dvd. Some films don't need shrinking - only those which are dual layer, which are usually those too long to fit on one dvd and those which carry a lot of extra features. Sometimes if you remove the extra feature files (much easier to do on Clone dvd) the film will then fit onto a standard dvd without shrinking the quality. Wouldn't always recommend removing the foreign audio/ subtitles as some films (Black Rain, for instance) use these subtitles only when there is dialect in another language (Japanese in the case of Black Rain, where you have to select subtitle 16 to get the Japanese translation). Remove the foreign audio/subtitles and you get no subtitles for the Japanese. Also in a film like Stargate where you have to select the language from a screen at the begining, removing the foreign audio/subtitles rernders the selection screen useless and you cannot advance to the actual film.

Another tip, when removing the special features files, always check through them and deselect only the special feature files. Leave all other dvd titles files alone - you know, the annoying ones at the start of the film. You can remove adverts for other films though.

Not that I would ever dream of copying a retail dvd, of course. It's theft, isn't it? ;)
