I heard the Safeway on Infirmary Road is now closed. Does anyone know when it will reopen and is it true it will reopen as a Tesco?

Thanks!

Thanks.

Didn't think it would be closed that long. That limits my options to Morrisons (though it takes ages to get round the aircraft hanger sized space) and Co-op (which is fine if you want powdered egg and other memorabilia type food).

Yes it will be a Tesco. Morrisons bought out Safeway but part of the deal was to sell off some of the stores as some were too close to the other Morrison stores.

Which is why I was surprised Morrisons didn't move in to the Eccy Road Safeway, because the Infirmary Road one is obviously much closer to their original store at Hillsborough Barracks. Of course, Eccy Road Safeways is now Waitrose.

Isn't Safeway's a Morrison's now anyway?

The Co-op is OK, not at all old peoples food, mostly. The one on the way to Commonside is modern it has electricity, refrigerators and stuff.

Better than Jacksons.

That Safeway has become a Waitrose, its the smaller one at Upperthorpe that is becoming a Tesco... which means we will have to carry our shopping home in horrible blue and white Owls carrier bags. Might have to turn them inside out :)

Can anyone confirm that the (soon to be) Tesco on Infirmary Road will do 24 hour opening? That would be really handy.....

I would be very surprised if it did stay open 24 hours... it isn't a very big shop, and its not really in a student area. Would be useful if it did though....

Nope - they had to sell them because the Monopolies Commision wouldn't let them buy Safeway's and keep all the stores.

Yes, and they even take credit and debit cards. So all you students can go and pay for your £2.14 purchases using your Switch cards.

Not being a student, they pay £2.14 for puchaces on thier switch cards.

I stand in the queue fuming because they're dithering and farting about paying for goods in this longwinded fashion.

I use cash. I would like to pay using books of stamps. If only to annoy the students. :-)

I agree with Troy, the Co-op in Hillsborough is rubbish, they have no fresh veg and the standard of service is pathetic.

They have about 10 sales assistants wandering about chatting, never doing any work, and only one person on the till, ensuring that a big queue builds up eveytime.

Friday nights about half six are the worst. Try getting your weekend essentials (ale) within about 30 mins and you've got no chance. Pay by switch at your peril.

If there is a manager there I've never seen them!

Sort it out

Went and had a nosey this morning.

They've put up a lot of site huts outside the front of the store and are fencing off as far as the "road" that runs through car park. Lots of guys in hard hats, some on the roof - are they going to do major structural alterations, or even build another floor? Definately looks like preparation for something more than a re-fit.

Good news is all you Northerners now have the chance to enjoy a proper supermarket with the opening of the first Waitrose on Ecclesall rd (bliss) replacing the Godforsaken dump that was Safeways. Like previous attempts with Starbucks etc I'm not hopeful it will last (pearls before swine) - but give it a chance eh - you can do better!

In case it's not obvious, I'm not from round here - but do love its potential.

But at least Safeway sold better tasting food at a lesser price than the new Waitrose.

But fortunately, the Safeway in this post is turning into a Tesco not a rip-off Waitrose.

You'll all have to humor big pockets, He's a southerner. Supermarkets are important to them for some reason (seen this with my sisters friends in london), wheres curiously for me its just somewhere to buy food...

It's not that Supermarkets per se are important - it's just nice to be able to choose between the predictable (Safeway and Tesco~) the rubbish in the guise of predictable (Morrison's - no coincidence we don't have them down South) and the rubbish (Nettos, Lidl etc).

If I thought the South were better - I'd have stayed there - I've been here 12years . I love Sheffield - but just wish it would recognise social diversity to be healthy - and embrace it.

I know it's off thread but I'm not impressed with the new Waitrose on Ecclesall Rd - lots of little things really. But one thing stands out - they had 4 different types of eggs - "healthy eggs", "free range eggs" etc, etc. I tried the 'healthy eggs' - well the yolk was so pale on each of them that an omelette looked more like a white pancake and tasted of nothing. There was even a feather in each of the egg boxes to convince you of a farmyard origin.

Precisely the opposite - they had put a feather in each egg box to give a 'healthy' farm image. But the eggs were crap.

I doubt it was a conscious 'image' thing. Waitrose eggs come from the company's own farm.

We do have Morrisons down here, just not a great amount - our town has a Morrisons in it.

I'm from down south and I'm actually quite impressed with some of the morrisons. They do vary from store to store though, but it can be quite annoying trying to find what your looking for, they're not layed out in a conventional manor.

As for the waitrose, I was quite impressed, all the staff were polite and had a good attitude. They pointed out the best specials and I think (after buying a few special offers) my last trip there was cheaper than my last trip to morrisons.
The produce is also much better, its all freshly farmed by the waitrose partnership, unlike half the over preservitivised 'fresh' month old food you get else where. Much healthier and nicer, worth the extra few quid to know your getting something genuine, not a mcfrankenstien of produce.

Drove home past the new Tesco (was Safeway) on Infirmary Road, and noticed that some of the signs have gone up.

And yay, it's going to be 24 hour opening!

Not sure when it opens exactly - some time next week I think.

Tesco In Woodseats Has reopened as Tesco Metro or Tesco Express or something. The rapid self servce till idea is a great novelty, but the place is crap. There used to be many more food lines in before, and now it's full of stuff which nobody will buy. Jumpers, DVDs, Cheap Trousers:- Was looking a bit old and rough before. But I'll give this one 6 months before it goes pop.

The new Infirmary Road Tesco is due to open at 8am this coming Monday (6th December). It will be fun walking up through the Ponderosa in the middle of the night with my shopping! :D

It's not just marketing, they really do have their own farms. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, of course - and to be honest, it's clear that you get what you pay for. There's just no comparison between Waitrose meat and Morrisons meat, for example.

I am finding this stuff about the monopolies and what-have-yous commission's reaction to Safeway being taken over by Morrison's and having to close/ be sold on, really peculiar.

I don't get it. there's a Tesco at Woodseats. there's a Tesco on West Street, opposite my office.

They are nearer each other than the Safeway at Meadowhead, and the Safeway at the bottom of Ecclesall road. so how come Tesco aren't being made to shut their stores?

(i am not so puzzled with the Morrisons at Hillsborough, and the Safeway at Infirmary Road, and their proximity to each other, although the convenience of the one on Infirmary Rd for the folk of Netherthorpe etc, being near on to them would IMO have warranted keeping both open)

I just don't get these multi -million pound merger things.

Heaven forbid.

We'd have had no choice but to shop @ Morricr4ps. Horrible, horrible experience!

Can't wait for the 24hr Tesco to open. Just hope they manage to keep a decent selection of fresh produce for the full 24 hours.

Well, what do people think of it? Good addition I think. Certainly better than the Safeway that was there. It's nearer to a tramstop/bus stop than Morrisons, and saves you standing in a massive queue in the West St branch.

Mr/Ms Tescoshopmanager please note - why no Tesco veggie ravioli or veggie burgers? That was the main reason I went (and I'm not even a veggie).

Not sure about using the self-service tills after a hard day's graft. I'll only use them again if I have to.

What hours can you buy booze in there? Not 24 hours a day I'm guessing. Do shutters come down at 11pm while 8am or summat?

Bilge - there are the nice frozen veggie burgers in the store now! Not checked for the raviolli though. Why no deli is my only question. There's room .....

Do like the selfservice till, and that both Waitrose + Tesco have kept on staff from the old stores.
