Can anyone suggest a good place to buy a Domain and host it ?? I've looked at numerous sites and still can't make my mind up..
Advice much appreciated

(apologies if a similar thread has been done before, I couldn't find one when I searched)
Lots of folks on the forum do registering and hosting - I do myself but usually only for people that I do site development for as well.
The only piece of advice I'd offer is make sure you know what you're getting - if you get offered a low price then ensure thatthere are no hidden extras if you should want to transfer your domain to another hosting company.
Also, make sure you're down as the owner of the domain, and not your host or registration company.
You might want to consider buying your domain through someone like 123-reg and then hosting it separately.

I shall investigate further. It will be a new domain, no transferring involved.. Just want a reliable host when I get it started.
Thanks once again

Someone posted a hosting company on Sheff Forum quite some months ago that was situated in Germany I think. The prices were cheap as chips! Couple of quid a month or something.
Had a quick look on the forum someone mentioned: www.t3hosting.co.uk (http://www.t3hosting.co.uk)

C, try freeparking (www.freeparking.com) IIRC.

I 'bought' my domain names through UKreg.com. Not had any problems with them in the last couple of years. Cant help you with hosting tho :(

I'd recommend UKReg for domain names as much out of long term usage and positive experience than anything else...
There are some other good registration services but the cheap and cheerful crew usually aren't worth using because of the hassles you get later in life... I'm sure many long term net users will happily share horror stories on that score.
As for hosting.. can't be much help.. I host my own sites and those of clients on a semi-dedicated machine, again for control and high reliability... I don't offer hosting accounts to people who design and tinker with their own site.
Best of luck in the search though.

I'd also advocate registering a domain with a registrar, then look for hosting (keeping hosting & domain registration seperate is good in that if you are ever dis-satisfied with your host, you simply alter the nameservers from within the domain reg's control panel to another host - as some "unscruplous" hosts charge a fortune to transfer the domain to a different reg).
123reg (http://www.123-reg.co.uk/affiliate.cgi?id=AF78463) (now owned by Pipex) are pretty cheap (especially for co.uk domains).
As to hosting...
Depends on what you're going to be putting on the server.
Also, what features are required (PHP, MySQL etc), price range, data transfer etc.
If you can be a little more specific, I may be able to help with hosting. ;-)
I just want something that will hold alot images and a potential mini-forum etc (also potentially a database or number of databases which would be managed by MySQL)
Its just an idea Ive had for a site a few weeks back and have already started designing the site etc..
Im still on the hunt and UKreg looks a good start..
Cheers peeps :)

ive been thinking for quite a while about using 123-reg.co.uk for the domain and then hosting the actual site on jamroll.co.uk
haven't actually done it yet though.
my dad uses 123-reg.co.uk for his business and he says its really safe, and cheap (few quid a year)
