well just to reinforce that a little Moon - i can't work out if that's 1 million across the board or just in the 16-44 age group

Does anyone remember "Gregory's Girl"? I think they reckoned in that film that there were 8 women to every man in Caracas (or somewhere like that)

Maybe it's time to move .... ?

Made me feel alot better. All this time i thought the stats were in my favour, but it turns out that the odds (as well as the gods) are against me. oh well.

But it still says there is 1.4 million more women than men so how does that work out???

because women live longer!
but saying that the actual birth rates are pretty similar i.e the number of female births are just about the same as male births so i've no idea why there's more single men!

Thats true - however thats largly covered by the separate widowed section (2.7m widowed women plays 731,000 men are widowers)? I can't help wondering if its more a matter of perception - do men consider themselves single while in a loose relationship that women would consider not single? Answers on a postcard to...

The report actually says the number who have never married rather than the number of singles. Which is not the same thing.

Otherwise it would be merely saying there are 1million more men than women (assuming we are talking about monogamous relationships and assuming equal numbers of homosexuals among both sexes)

Which only goes to show if someone doesn't understand numbers you can fool them into believeing anything with statistics!

Did you understand a word of what I said, Bedhead?

'you're' assuming that the report suggests divorcees are not taken into account which can only indicate that men get married more times than women?

the rest is self-explanatory

you're also indirectly referring to me as a fool! which i'll let pass because i'm daft, of course

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that, I just couldn't see the connection between my post and what you were saying.

I was assuming that it did take divorcees into account. I guess what I was saying is, the report didn't seem to be saying what the title of this thread is on the face of it.

If you want to compare the numbers of single men and women you should count just that. Talking about marriage just confuses the issue. I don't think it is correct to say there are 1 million more single men than women because the numbers don't add up.

that's why i said 'phew' in reply to your post (me being single) wouldn't want to assume that there were fewer women out there and yes it seems the figures have been massaged somewhat and the title to the thread is flawed

but on a happy note at least it's nice to know that Mr Trescothic has joined the married population - now THAT'S really informative :loopy:

I'm not an expert but I think that there are more men in homosexual relationships than women.
There are slightly more women in the general population than men, but not enough to account for this difference.

I don't know a lot about Bridget Jones, but I get the impression that it implies that a woman is a failure if she hasn't snared a bloke.

I know very little about the whole phenomenon though, so I could be wrong!

I heard that "Sex in the City" was originally written with the main characters being gay men. For some reason, this was then changed to Samantha, Carrie and co. No idea why.

Oh, at last, another female who thinks Bridget Jones is pants!! I was beginning to think I was suffering from a humour by-pass!

I just don't understand the fuss over Bridget Jones and similar "chick-lit". I tried to read her Diary a couple of years ago, and was so bored I couldn't be bothered to finish it. I just didn't find it interesting or funny .....

Now perhaps if I lived in Islington and drank a lot of Chardonnay .....

'1 million more single men than women 16-44!'

I don't know about anyone else but I think quality is more important than quantity anyway!

Slightly off topic but also have to agree that BJones is a load of (big!) pants...
