Just driving home and passed a house that had lots of posters in the window for a certain political party, along with signs in the garden.

Would you advertise your political party preference?

Personally I wouldn't, think it comes from my Dad always saying that his vote was between him and the ballot box.

That's a typically bigoted view from you, Mel. Tar all equally, in spite of the evidence. Compared to whatever corruption or croneyism, blanket nihilism is the most pernicious political force of all.

I wonder how many of the people who slag off politicians, local or national, have actually ever tried contacting them or getting them on side? I've had lots of communication with my coucillors and they've been fantastic and have results to show for their efforts in the community. I've also had a major success with my MP, when all around me were saying they would be useless and what's the point.

I'm sick of hearing nay-sayers and prejudiced pessimists who turn out not to even attempt to partake of the democratic process.

Although I don't have a political party, I would consider advertising my local voting choice, though I'm not convinced that sticking a poster in your window influences anyone.I believe people should vote for who they choose to support, I've never understood why putting a poster in your window will transform passers by's voting habits.

I had a Green party campaigner knock on my door last week to canvas my vote. I told him that I was going to vote Green anyway because I've met Jillian Creasey for a meeting before and found her to be very helpful. He thanked me and then asked if I'd be prepared to put a Green party poster in my window. I declined though, as I said that I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to influence the voting intentions of my neighbours. After all, it's a democracy so they can vote for whoever they want to.....

Surely your neighbours can still vote for whoever they want, regardless of whether you display your support for a particular party or not?

Yes they can and in a democracy people do have the right to campaign for votes, but I personally wouldn't feel comfortable visibly displaying party paraphernalia. After all, what is a party poster but a message saying "vote for this party"?

I still think they have their uses, as supposedly 5 votes are gained for every poster that is displayed. A lot of people say "I'd like to vote for XXX party but they don't stand a chance of getting in, so I wont", yet if they see support (i.e. posters) for that party in their area, their belief that they wont get in is challenged, and they may vote for the party they actually believe in, instead of tactically.

This reminds me, it's about time I put my posters up.
