Darkoak 20-04-2007, 18:24 Yes, The Peacock and Top House are still there, as are Minnies and The Sportsman....unfortunately:gag:. Hare and Hounds shut a few years ago and is looking very sorry for itself nowadays. Some suggestion that the brewery (who apparently own the disused cricket ground at the rear) want to convert it into apartments. Anyone confirm this? pattricia 20-04-2007, 18:38 Not many Stannington people on, have they not got computers ? :gag: teddie 21-04-2007, 10:44 Doesn't look like they have Pattricia!! Wonder if anyone went to bradfield school, might be able to chat with some one from there. LadyInRed 28-04-2007, 08:04 Yes we have computers and they even let us have mobile phone's and sky this far up the hill!! Depends how old you are Teddie and which school you went to and when? I moved from Stannington to Hillsborough and have been trying to get back up the hill ever since, and finally this weekend I moved back to a nice new place!! The Minnies has has re-hual and is looking very nice and is no -smoking, the Hare looks as rough as ever, the Crown and Glove is still there - but I could never be bothered to walk all the way up the hill, Peacock is still open and the Sportsman has been taken over by a nice lady called Jean, the Deerstalker is open but up for sale. And after all my unpacking today I will be having a few pints in the Sportsman with family & friends. slimsid2000 16-06-2007, 13:41 Anyone out there who comes from Stannington, i lived there until I was 21, only been back once, just wondered if the Top House, Peacock etc was still there?? Yes both still there. Top house is still a place for pipe smoking and dominoes and Peacock has some pretty waitresses. teddie 16-06-2007, 17:33 Heard that someone burnt down the library:loopy: THE FLUTER 18-10-2007, 22:52 Most of my life, from Stannington, but hey we've been taken over by so many aliens, and am sorry that happens to be a compliment, they aint even that, but a true Stannington res knows what i mean !!!!!Unfortunately most of old trads now gone. Anyone has same passion as my good self, plz get in touch ! skippy 18-10-2007, 23:20 [QUOTE=THE FLUTER;2750303] Anyone has same passion as my good self ? I lived on the opposite side to the Crown & Glove & about 100 yards up in 1944, I lived with my aunty for many years due to the blitz. Those were the days when most people there were self sufficient & it was mostly farms and cottages, my mothers side of the family lived at middle cottage many years ago, which is about a mile up the road from the Crown & G, and that's where my mother & auntie were born. There was no electicity at the time and all the house lights were gas, the radio worked from an accumulator [battery] which had to be taken to be charged up every so often. It was a different place to what I remembered when I last visited in 1990 caronlel 19-10-2007, 08:40 I'm not native Stannington but I did grow up and mis-spend my youth there on Roscoe Mount! I'll get the map out shall I :P Roscoe Mount (not Bank) backs on to the Turnbull, Liberty Hill - this is defined as Stannington in it's postal address so there :hihi: Daven 20-10-2007, 18:31 Oh dear ! Here we go again ! Daven 20-10-2007, 18:38 I think these days anyone with a S6 post code claims to live in Stannington. Historically , the village of Stannington began at the Sportsman pub . skippy 21-10-2007, 01:15 Historically , the village of Stannington began at the Sportsman pub . When the bus first started running to Stannington, I think there were only 2 buses a day & they ran from Malin Bridge, it terminated at a pub & people had to walk the rest of the way if they lived in the village. Later they extended the route so that it went to another pub that was opposite Stannington Public school & we still had a good walk, thankfully the route was extended again by 2 stops, one being at the monument opposite the Hare & Hounds & the terminus a bit further down the road, by that time the other terminus was on Campo Lane. Winter in the 40's was a problem, the bus could not run very often as the snow was very deep in those days & people got cut off for days on end, my mother told me about my grandfather having to walk on the walls & battle snowdrifts to get to work, my uncle worked at the water treatment plant near Riverlin Post Office, he would ride down to work on his pushbike & walk back home pushing it up the hills. People also had dry toilets in those days, usually a big bucket in a shed at the bottom of the garden, I had no problem doing what I went there for as a child, especially when the cows put their heads under the back of the shed and did a big MOO. Once a year, people went to Underbank Chapel for what they called the sermons, they would be tarted up in their Sunday best and walking on the paths across the fields to reach it & the voices of the choirs could be heard echoing across the valley, most of my relatives are buried in the churchyard there, is the chapel still there ? Yes Skippy, Underbank Chapel is still there. I don't think it's changed it's appearance since it was built several hundred years ago! skippy 21-10-2007, 11:22 [QUOTE=Darkoak;2756645] Yes Skippy, Underbank Chapel is still there. Thanks for that info Darkoak, can you enlighten me on the 2 pubs on the bus route, I know one was the Sportsman but can't remember what the other was called, is that the Sportsman just down the road from the monument ? Darkoak 21-10-2007, 14:17 [QUOTE=Darkoak;2756645] Yes Skippy, Underbank Chapel is still there. Thanks for that info Darkoak, can you enlighten me on the 2 pubs on the bus route, I know one was the Sportsman but can't remember what the other was called, is that the Sportsman just down the road from the monument ? Skippy, I've spoken to my Mum, who has lived in the village for over 60yrs and she believes the bus service you have referred to was set up in the 1930's (?) by a local entrepreneur called Mr.Thraile. The route ran from Malin Bridge (as you reckoned), up Stannington road passing The Sportsman PH (although this would have been the old building which was demolished to be replaced by the existing structure on virtually the same site in the 60's). The route then went up the steep section of the road (passed what is now the shops), passed The Peacock PH on your right, before swinging left at Knowle Top Chapel onto Uppergate Road, then turning right at the War Memorial towards The Riggs. On the left just after that junction used to stand the pub I think you refer to, namely the 'old' Hare and Hounds. The area it used to occupy is now the former car park of the (sadly) disused cricket pitch. My Mum thinks the 'old' pub was badly damaged by a fire in the 50's/60's (?), was declared unsafe and was re-built where the existing (now closed) pub is today. That stretch of road was/is locally known as 'Gray's Hill', after the long-standing landlord of the pub at the time. The bus carried on a short way passed here and terminated in the front car park of The Crown & Glove (aka 'Top House). So your'e right in saying that residents who lived higher up would have a steep walk to get home. Hope this helps. Darkoak 21-10-2007, 14:35 Skippy, further to the above (and to avoid any confusion - I hope!), the pub you mention as "just down the road from the monument" is 'Minnies' / Rose & Crown. The 'old' Hare & Hounds used to stand virtually opposite the War Memorial (monument). teddie 21-10-2007, 17:27 Thanks everyone for this I can picture Stannington after all these years. I had actually forgotten the war Memorial where it was, but now thanks to you it is all clear again. Thanx XX skippy 22-10-2007, 01:46 Darkoak, Sportsman & Peacock ring a bell, your mother would probably remember my aunty & uncle, Joe & Alice Skelton, they lived in a red brick semi detached house on Uppergate Rd, second house down from Reynolds Lane before passing away. They also owned a shop at Knowle Top, Stannington in the late 30's early 40's called Skeltons, one of there son's [Granville] got killed at the monument around late 30's / early 40's when he was hit by the only lorry in Stannington, how lucky was that, the other son [Donald] never married and lived in the same home until his death some probably 7 years ago. Here is a photo of the shop & also the house where my grandparents lived in 1900 & where my mother & aunty were born, as you can see it's still there, Middle Cottage, Riggs High Road, Stannington, my great grandparents came from that area also. http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j134/skippy_63/scan0004.jpg http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j134/skippy_63/scan0003.jpg There are also some pictures on Sheffield Pictures in the Stannington section. Skippy, I'm pretty sure that Skelton's Fruit shop was taken over by a couple called Elsie & George, who still had the premises into the mid/late 60's. The road where the shop used to stand was widened slightly around this time to allow for the increase in traffic, with the building in your photo being knocked down to accomodate this. The land where your auntie & uncle had their shop is now largely on the border between the bottom end of The Peacock Car Park, the top side of gardens belonging to Manor House Old Folks Home and the pavement. The owners moved to where the village fruit shop is now (a couple of hundred yards down the road on the same side). The shop was known as 'Elsie's' for quite some years after that time. Was 'Middle Cottage' at the very top of Reynard Lane, where it meets High Riggs Road? It looks very similar to a building which still stands there. As for the cost (£105,000) - is this a recent photo?! When I'm on a more sociable shift, I'll speak to my Mum to see if she remembers your relatives you have mentioned. skippy 22-10-2007, 22:19 [QUOTE=Darkoak;2762475] Was 'Middle Cottage' at the very top of Reynard Lane, where it meets High Riggs Road? Darkoak, that picture of Middle Cottage was sent to me in the early 90's by my mother, who has since passed away, the cottages are not on the corner, they are further up High Riggs Road & on the left hand side, seem to remember that they were built in the early 1800's to accomodate the workers on the farm. Walking up Uppergate Road, there were a few stone houses after the Hare & Hounds, then allotments until you reached 147 which was my aunties house, on the opposite side were houses, the Crown & Glove & then cottages right up and they finished opposite Reynolds or Reynard lane, there was Maude's shop in the row of cottages & the gateway to the farm was just about opposite my aunties house. After Rey--- lane there were just a couple of farms, the cottage was on one of them but I can't remember how far, probably 3 or 4 hundred yards further up from the corner, I may try and find it on Flash earth. It was a different place when I visited in 1990. poppins 22-10-2007, 23:09 Whats a coloured suite ?
