Hi, I'm looking to buy a bird i have a nice size cage and all bits and pieces, but am unsure which bird to go with. So i'd like some other opinions on preference and reasons for that choice please?
Thank ings
how experianced bird keeper are you?
what size is the cage?
how much time would the bird be left alone?
how much do you want to pay?

very good points made by daz1976 just what i was going to ask if you can answer those first it would give us a better idea.
If you have time on your hands maybe you could try one of the bird auctions have a great solection normaly. And you could chat to breeders there and gather up info from them .
I have a wonderful little male canary. He sings all day long, is interested enough to come and see what I am doing and answers me when I whistle. He isn't complicated to look after. Canaries never really become tame and he doesn't get let out (although the cats would probably appreciate it). He lives in a common or garden budgie type cage with enough room in it for him to fly a bit from perch to perch. (the bigger cage, the better they like it). All in all, I can highly recommend a canary. If you decide you might fancy one, males sing, the females don't (or not very much). Choose a canary with a broad chest and bright eyes and listen to it sing.
I have also had finches (zebra and bengalese). They are great fun to keep too, although the zebras are a bit on the promiscuous side! They are constantly active and you can get twice as many finches in a cage as canaries or budgies. Zebras cheep, bengalese have a sort of warble, which is not unpleasant. They can be mixed. Again, they pretty much do their own thing but are great to watch.

ooh now your asking ,Of hand i know Skellingthorpe youth hall near lincoln has one 01742 331603 you would have to ring them to see when there next venue is theres some much nearer though try a search for bird auctions sure sumat will crop up or you could buy the cage and avairy there listed in there .
Id rather have the canary but love the bull finch and greenfinch or the mules but you will be paying a higher price for them for a legal one anyway compaired to the price of a canary .
canarys will become very tame mainly if you get a very young one .Parrots ect really need company not a good idea really if there home alone all day they can become bored.
Ive nothing available at the moment as there all breeding so cant help you there at the mo....You can pic up some really good bargains at the Auctions.

I grew up with a houseful of pets, including an avaiary of foreign finches- in the days when youcould but them from Maces pets store (probably imported so hardly pc now!) We had all sorts- silverbills, bengalese, red eared waxbills, tricoloured nuns, zebra finches, ornage cheeked waxbills, Java sparrows, crikey I cant remember the rest. There were chines and japanese quails too and I had a ring-necked parakeet and a budgie. Had canaries at one stage and a mynah bird. Always fancied an amazon grey parot or a macaw but they were way too expensive and these days, with our mad mogies, I wouldnt risk getting one. Just have the one middle aged cockatiel now- hes about 15, I think. Good luck findig a bird!
