Can anybody recall the Carwash at Neepsend in the days when there were around half-a-dozen carwashes as well as the huge automatic one which is the only one left working these days?

I recall going nearly every Sunday morning with my Dad in the early seventies, and you could choose which carwash you wanted. On most of the carwashes, you sat in the car whilst the water jets and brushes moved back and forth. My dad once left me in the car by myself and I was terrified!!!

The place is all rundown now but I remember it as an exciting place in the seventies, I used to love going. I recall it as being a bright, well kept place but I guess, things were like that back then anyway when people seemed to have more pride.

I'd love to hear your comments.

I remember that place.

Like you said there were a bunch of different automatic washes, but you could also rent a 'garage' which you could drive the car into and use the high pressure hoses etc. It was the forerunner for all the Jet washes that most large Petrol Stations have now.

There was also an area where you could use the large vacumn machines - I think they were the only ones around at the time.

Sunday morning was like Picadilly Circus with all the cars around - another really busy time was the Friday Night before works weeks - everyone took their car there for a really good fettle prior to the long drive to Skeggy/Blackpool or some other seaside resort where you could pose in your escort/mini etc

Went to an automatic carwash at the Lady's Bridge end of Nursery Strreet with my bosses Rolls Royce in 1963. Almost got sacked because the Rolls was too wide for the carwash, and got scratches down both sides of the car. Tried to get compensation from the guy who ran the place, but all he was interested in was trying to sell me a Mk v Jaguar. wish i'd bought that car!
