:help: Any ideas on how I can stop our dog Jasper chewing things?:help:
I dont mean major things like furniture etc, just small things, toys, usually made of plastic, pen tops etc.
If the kids leave anything around within a few minutes he has chewed the end off it. Very annoying.
I give him plenty of the hide-type bones to chew on but dont know what else to do.
He is 2 and is a rescue dog. Apart from this he is really good.
you could try the product bitter bite- its an unpleasant apple /citrus concoction designed specially to stop dogs chewing things they shouldnt be chewing.

Dont think anything like that would work as I would have to spray it on all the pens, pencils, toys etc all over the house!
If it was large things like a table leg or something, then yes but he is only interested in the small things.
He also likes to eat wax crayons :loopy: which looks very strange when it comes out the other end - multi-coloured poo!!!:hihi:

I have 2 labradors and nothing works. They chew everything. I find the only thing that makes our house more peaceful is to make sure there is nothing that they can damage when they are left unattended. For instance when we leave them in the house (if they arent in their dog shed outside) I always leave them in the hallway. I move the hall stand and the flowers and the plug in air freshener. Basically if there is nothing within their reach that they arent allowed then they cant be naughty can they? :)

Many dogs chew up to 2 or 2 and a half years old. Primarily the problem is a lack of specific nutrients. You will notice they will often go for things that our hands have touched (pens, remotes, mobiles - definately kids things).
I think its a bit like opening the fridge door and going 'now what do i want' I know i want something - erm? so they are looking for the nutrient that they are missing. At this age - they are still needing it whilst their bodies are finishing off growing.
Thats why many dogs will chew away at the plaster on the walls - it must resemble something they think they are missing.
So, my first point of call would be to look at what you are feedin this little chap. Bakers complete is often a classic with dogs being dumped in rescue - i liken it to kids on smarties. Get a good quality low protein dog food and feed the quantity that it says for his age. Do not feed junior or puppy.
If you can only afford a cheaper food - chappie is often a really good all rounder. Maybe give a multi-vit which may bring him up to what he needs and a very basic all round natural yoghurt - plain and the cheap type in the shop.
A final suggestion would be to try a DAP DIFFUSER. This is a hormone which will give off calming smells, as some dogs will chew if they are stressed - (say being left) - but they would often chew furniture as well so may not be this.
Let us know how you get on would you?

I feed him Nature Diet with a handful of Wafcol mixed in and he has thrived since he has been on that and he really enjoys it.
He is fine when he is left, just gets in his bed and goes to sleep, but we leave him in the kitchen, so nothing around for him to chew.
