View Full Version : What's happening to 'Bed' nightclub on London Road?

Apologies if I missed out on some piece of common knowledge...just wondering if anyone knows what is happening to Bed Nightclub?

Understand the land adjacent is being used for development work. But they seem to have left the club standing.

Is it ever going to re-open? Is a listed building? Who currently owns it? Are they going to make it into flats?

What's going on?!? Feel sorry for it every time I walk up London Road and see it left as a dilapidated shell!

From what I understand it is a listed building and it will be used for the enertence for the new building.

Anyone know why they painted it black? It looks awfull IMO.

Its been painted black for ages! For the last 4 years anyway!

Anyone know who is doing the development work?

anybody know whats going on with bed on london road? Its been closed for ages.

i believe it's to be incorporated into the student flats that are being developed next to it. GC1 decided not to renew their lease as they weren't making enough money out of it to make it worth keeping hold of.

cheers andy. Sad to hear :(

gutting isnt it? bed was by far a fantastic nightclub and picked us up when gatecrasher got s****y. it smelt disgusting, but everyone was sooo friendly - i wonder why. im on about sat nights though not wed dirty student nights. I heard they were making it into a live music place, but hey what do i know

Andy78
08-11-2004, 15:48
Yeah, GC1 never actually explained officially what was happening with bed. I used to like the place, but found it started to get more pretentious towards the end and there were far too many people that wouldn't give you the time of day. I think a positive thing is that smaller clubs like Urban Gorilla have now taken off. It's good to see smaller clubs doing well and bringing new music into a scene that was getting dangerously stale. The same thing happened in Liverpool when Cream closed, a lot of smaller clubs took off which meant a greater variety of music and atmospheres in the city. I have found these newer clubs to have a far friendlier clientele. I think the scene overall is going back underground to its roots leading to the demise of super clubs.

went to hed kandi sat, it was ace - i danced my bootie off!!! so hot in there, lack of air conditioning take mick

Andy78
08-11-2004, 16:03
Yeah it gets way too hot. They should install some opening panels on the roof to release the heat. Simple idea that would be very effective and wouldn't cost much.

I still recomend that everyone tries Urban Gorilla, in my humble opinion it's the best sheffield has at the moment for music and crowd atmosphere, not to mention friendly peeps.

Non_Shabby
08-11-2004, 19:07
I'll second that. Urban Gorilla in the last few weeks has been some of the best clubbing I've had in the 10yrs I've been in this City. Long may it continue!

Someone just told me Bed's opening again into a Club!

I hope it is reopening. All the pretentious people in Sheffield can go there, and leave the the rest of Sheffield to the rest of us.

NatalieSheff
09-11-2004, 09:01
hey im not pretentious! sod what evryone else thinks of me there -i love the music and dance like a good un! live for the music not the people who generally look like manequins in division st shops

Yodameister
09-11-2004, 09:03
Yeah, I know a lot of people who go there are sound. There was a time though when Bed was "the place to be seen". It was always a bit of a mystery to me why, I suppose it was a bit less grubby than some of the others!

NatalieSheff
09-11-2004, 09:05
i know ! my friend came up from london and we took him to bed (not like that) and said how it was a trendy place etc... he was gobsmacked. thought we were taking mick

Hello peeps...

As far as I understand there is an argument over the lease, and whatever happens - and I would imagine it will be flats of some sort - its not going to happen quickly.

Urban Gorilla is top banana long may it hang around.

NatalieSheff
09-11-2004, 10:13
just asked around noone knows anything! we cant have more flats! i hope if they do reopen they give it a good clean, get rid of smelly carpets and make it brighter

mjlacey21
09-11-2004, 10:28
If there are going to be flats next door there's not a chance in hell of a club reopening there. From what i gathered from various people one of the problems was that they were having trouble renewing their license there, I know a few clubs in sheffield were struggling, maybe it was because planning permission for the flats had been granted.

Yodameister
09-11-2004, 10:33
Yes, with all the "brown field" sites in Sheffield City centre I think it is hardly going to be viewed as appropriate to reopen a club outside the city centre that is not out of town.

NatalieSheff
09-11-2004, 10:34
but theres flats next door to republic

Yodameister
09-11-2004, 10:37
Yes but it is within the confines of the city centre proper. If you live there I think you are asking for noise!

Okay, most people who live near bed would be aware that there was a club site there, but I'm not sure the licensing authorities would see it that way.

mjlacey21
09-11-2004, 10:40
I don't know for sure but i think there was also a bit of hoo ha (never written that before!) about the dealings within the club, it might just be rumour but were there was (allegedly) problems with the 'official' club dealers. (does this make any sense?)

NatalieSheff
09-11-2004, 10:42
dealers being the operative word hehe

09-11-2004, 10:43
the only thing that the building would have been good for (looking at the exterior) is for making it in to an excellent alternative nightclub - its black and has a spire, such a waste for a trendy nightclub.

NatalieSheff
09-11-2004, 10:46
could be a church

mjlacey21
09-11-2004, 10:48
i would make it into a pool hall that let you smoke (in the herbal sense)

i always wonder about the building for sale in the graveyard on cemetary road - looks like a fun club venue to me

Andy78
09-11-2004, 13:14
I can't see bed being re opened by GC1 as it doesn't make financial sense. They were only making money once or twice a month on big nights like hed kandi. They now have those nights at republic and don't have to pay for the lease of bed. As far as I know they were making no financial gain by running 2 big clubs at the same time. Especially as less people were frequenting superclubs around the country.

I think people were getting bored of the music as it hadn't been changing much in the big clubs. It was the smaller clubs that were pushing the boundaries and trying new things. This eventually paid off as a lot of those clubs became successful. As a result, the music is getting interesting again as is going clubbing. I remember a year or so ago thinking that I was getting to old for it because I wasn't finding it fun any more. Now I've realised that I was just bored of the same thing week in week out. Recently I've had some of the best nights of my life. The future's looking bright.

NatalieSheff
09-11-2004, 13:17
thats why i stopped doing gatecrasher - same people stood in same places, talking same c**p, then i found bed and the same thing started. i did cheesey for ages after, then went to hed kandi and found the love once more. youre never too old, my mates are from 16 - 43, keep dancing babes xx

mjlacey21
09-11-2004, 13:24
I don't feel the same vibe i used to when i went out. It's not that i need it to stay the same, but it was a lot more fun back in the days when we were students and everyone could always come out and we all still lived in sheffield. I miss it.

NatalieSheff
09-11-2004, 13:28

I really thought Hed Kandi were quite flat last NYE@Bed. In my humble opinion. Willing to give their Boxing Day bash ago though.

Only problem with growing up is fewer people go clubbing, although when they do they want to make the effort. Plus mates are all over the country, so you get to experience different nights out.

Should have been at headcharge vs UG - was wicked!!!

Elf1
09-11-2004, 14:16

mjlacey21
09-11-2004, 14:17

mjlacey21
09-11-2004, 14:32
not my ideal, but there was no good drum and bass north of milton keynes last year. Anyway there was the UG crowd there too. Im sure everytime i went to gatecrasher there were more underage kids than anywhere else i went.

Lived in sheff all my life, but in leeds @uni at the mo, heard a lil rumour about Bed being bought to be refurbished and opened as a new club this week?

has this rumour got any truth in it? or is again another rubbish rumour made up by people like myself who have such fond memories of bed days? or alternativly maybe it was made up to cheer up and give Kebabish and the R&R bar some hope????

I was under the impression that it was going to be used at the main enterence for the Student flats

Bed is looking very sorry for itself at the moment. Signs are all off and it's locked and shut. Paint is flaking, although there is sometimes a light on upstairs inside. I would think it was quite a few weeks from being useable. And is currently in the corner of a massive building site, would have thought it's future would be delayed until progress there.

NatalieSheff
14-12-2004, 12:32
a light on? has it got squatters? do the cameras still work outside?? i wish i had $$$ to buy BED and do it up nice and get rid of that P*** black paint

I don' get why it wasn't pulled down with the car garage then?

It would make quite a cool bar for the flats that are going up there though?

Because it belongs to a different owner than the TC Harrison site.

You should see how beautiful the terracotta brickwork is under all that paint. The entrance was designed as a chinese pagoda. It is a far too nice building to be lost.

Look the picture up in old sheffield history books. Or may be on Picture sheffield website >>

anyone know whats happening to the club? I walked past today and its all fenced off with DEMOLITION signs all over it.. they aren't knocking the whole place down are they?

I heard it was going to be a grand entrance to the student flats.. surely theres going to be more left of it than that?

rubydazzler
13-04-2005, 08:01
is it the truth that it's going to be pulled down :( That's awful, so many people have fond memories from it being the Locarno onwards ... and it was such an unusual building and an asset to the street scene until they painted it black ... philistines!!!

If it cant be used for anything else as a building, at least save the facade ... muddy coffee is right, the brickwork was eyecatching and the design is quirky ... hope it can be saved.

mjlacey21

The building is so old it's in an absolute state though and would probably cost way more to maintain than building something brand new unfortunately.

There's no way it will reopen as a club, there are student and professional flats joined on to the same building.

Hi,

Just been passed the old BED nightclub building at bottom of London Road and a big sign on the outside informs its going to be demolshed.

This building has been there since 1918 and it unique look would be a loss to the town.

I am sure everyone will have memories of this building as its been a cinema night club and shop.

May be the building could be used as an entrance to Sheffields China town?

Went to the FINAL 'Bed' night (31st December, 2003) - do you remember me!
I wore pvc chaps, a red satin tight top and a gold glittery stetson.
My friend, Sophie wore a miss christmas pvc outfit - she looked HOT!
Still got the flyer for that last night which ended at 6am.
I remember the 'bouncers' looking tired out at the end.
Used to love the 'white room' as they called it.
After it closed we started going to 'Fez Club.'
U can still catch us up Devonshire Street at weekends in Halcyon and Forum Bar and DQ.
Might try out Urban Gorilla cos I heard it's gud, but somehow escaped me so far.
Will always remember the gud timez down @ Bed!

Nonsensical 10.
1. First bit of nonsense:

Paul, who it seems has completely given up blogging (Well dahling it's so 2003!) sent me this requesting I post it. Presumably Eden, who also seems to be somewhat switched off, told him to fak off, that he wouldn't put it up at Uncarved. This isn't NYPLM you nutter Paul. It's Me Me Me striktly. As I'm being asked to edit it I thought I'd take a few liberties with the material:

Engelbert Humperdink at Bed, Sheffield on Friday

So Engelbert Humperdink is doing his thing with Justin (BIG pals, sit around together listening to old Greenslade albums) and the show comes to Sheffield and WE, the beautiful people of South Yorkshire, get a one-off club date? Why are we so favoured? Cos Engelbert Humperdink's album -- widely revered as the sound of Bow -- was ACTUALLY recorded here, in Sheffield. Round the corner from me in a studio in Nether edge, as it happens. Well, that's the story that's going round, and I've heard it from three different people, so maybe it's true? Anyway, Bed is Gatecrasher's venue, which means little other than that there are huge bass speakers under the floor, which make yer knees wobble. It was an "urban" night, seemed to be full of regulars, no aggro, and lots of poeple were noticeably dressed up to the nines. Sheffield women are gorgeous. This month's hot fashion tip -- trilby hats at a jaunty angle right over the face. Modtastic. The music was all hip hop and r&b with a few bits of UKG, and most tracks somehow sounded like jungle over that system. But by far the biggest sound of the night was dancehall. Whenever the energy dropped the DJs would play some and the crowd would go wild -- I was really surprised by just how far dancehall has taken over the hip-hop / r'n'b axis. As you'd expect there was lots of scratching and cutting, and records generally didn't get played to the end -- good stuff. There was also absolutely no compunction on the part of the DJs about playing big hits, so Sean Paul got a good airing. This did get on my tits a bit when I was waiting for Engelbert Humperdink to come on -- the last DJ before him was playing solid ToTP fodder which I could have done without. I got a bit bored.

Then Engelbert Humperdink came swaggering through the crowd with his fairly modest and polite entourage, wearing an outfit like Elephant Man -- oversized jacket covered with huge badges. Semtex took the decks and Wiley (I think) started hyping the crowd, a real show man, bigging up the ladies, talking about the 8 hour drive to come up, giving people the mic so he could hear some sexy Sheffield accents... Then Semtex dropped I Luv U and Engelbert Humperdink bounded on stage and the place just erupted. There were a *lot* of people who were seriously into him, crews from Manchester and Leeds, and the first 20 rows or so were jumping. Engelbert Humperdink did a pure MC set just like he does at Eski dance or whereever, rapping over his own stuff and other records, doing prepared raps as well as Freestyle, bounding across the stage, dancing, jumping on the speakers... Semtex couldn't always keep up, with Engelbert Humperdink occasionally telling him to move on with the next track, always two steps ahead of where the crowd wanted to be, and displaying impressive empathy. Wiley and (I think) some feller from Roll Deep were up there too adding their flow to his so you got the whole rap tag team thing.

There'd been a few rappers on during the night and they were OK but Engelbert Humperdink really is something else. His flow is intensely syncopated, very much like the skipping, hiccuping beats of UKG, and the lyrical ideas just fly out of him like a shower of sparks. There's always piercing diction yet his accent means he sounds like he's gargling with golf balls all the time. He's totally hyped and confident but there's not a trace of the turgid gangster braggadoccio that blunts the attack of so many rappers, instead there's a constant volley of ideas and images - he's got so damn much to say he doesn't have /time/ to collapse into cliches. His beats, naturally, make SO much more sense and have SO much more groove heard live too. That stuttering, plinkety-plonk doodling transforms itself into something like jungle's hyperkinetic breaks, but in bullet time, slowed to a stop yet endlessly oscillating. In other words, what sounds a bit ropey on record is funky as **** live.

I was too knackered to stay til the end, but the standout of what I heard was Jus a Rascal, which was a blitzkrieg-like, its overwhelming, massed-voices monstrosity had everyone screaming. Quite fantastic. Though his freestyle over the Diwali rhythm was also excellent. I left when Semtex tried to get him to rap over PIMP -- I don't think Engelbert Humperdink was much into it, and three times in one night for that track was too much for me, so I wandered off.

I WOZ THERE!:D ... GUD TIMEZ!

Still very confused with this thread. Bed's music policy was just what sheffield needed, but Sheffield was not ready for it hence the lease ended and now Bed is no more. To be fair the building had its glory days as the Palais (Jam Factory, Make it Funky, Compulsion) and Music Factory (Love2be). Bed never quite had the consistency as the earlier club nights. May be it was a sign of the times. Highlights for me was was Derrick May - Palais, Todd Terry - New years Eve @ Love2be. (celebrities galore)

Joe9T
18-01-2007, 12:34
Dizzee Rascal was advertised as Engelbert Humperdink on posters outside venue for that night back in late 2003 @ BED!
Prob that's why it closed - people didn't know who was comin or goin!
Neva went prior to it becoming Bed, but know it had sum history AND great timez.
Still luved it though... but things have AND must change.
Even the places to be at present will be no more in the future.
THAT'S PROGRESS - whether gud or bad.
MEMORIES are great and 'Bed' must have been gud cos we still talkin bout it.
GOOD TIMEZ:smile:

Bed did have some good nights but the history of the building with its previous owners and massive club nights far outweights the events Bed tried. It was too inconsistant, compared to the massive weekly nights at the Palais and Music Factory.

Apparently, I was always led to believe that due to flats bein built close by, the place cud not be run any more as a nightclub.
Nothin to do with the the place not makin enough money.
I think it was goin to continue as a venue where bands played, but wud shut by 11:30 or no lata than midnight.

The final ever night was Hed Kandi and it was rammed!

Main Room: Mark Doyle/Andy Norman/John Jones/Pav(Percussion)
The Loft: Sheffield All-Stars - Corey/Simon Brown/Adam Cooling/Nathan Lewin
White Room: Porn Party - Rheamous Johnson/Zak Creevy/Special Guest Pinky Cox

The crowds had all gone by 6:30 AND 'Bed' had become no more :(

Well as we're resurrecting the Bed thing I'll repeat what I said before about this - I was always distinctly underwhelmed by it. Had only TWO good nights in there - 1st time Sanchez came and played it really hard and tribal for a change then 1st time Lil Louie Vega played, other than that I thought it lacked atmosphere, those are the only two nights I saw it properly rockin'. Too many posers, not enough clubbers.

However, I think my judgement was clouded as I'd been a Shindig regular before I moved here and that place is electric, unbeatable, so Bed was a let-down for me. Final nail in the coffin was the 2nd time Sanchez played - I turned up near midnight, paid £30 for the two of us to get in and found that Rog was playing his last tune - the cu nts didn't see it fit to advertise he was playing the early set from 10pm and would be f-ing off to GCSS at Lotherton Hall after his paltry 2hrs.

I know that doesn't sit well with some folk (Mr Growns??? :hihi: ) but I'm just telling it how I saw it. I was gutted to be honest as I'd always read great things and saw ace line-ups, then when I got here I thought it was a real disappointment.

Sanchez has always been a disappointment to me as well. The other year me and a mate paid I think it was about 20 quid each for an advertised "7 hour set."
7 Hours, yeah right more like 2. This is why I think that the age of the superclubs and big-name DJs is coming to an end, people are getting too ****ed off with paying big money just to see someone who happens to be a bit famous for whatever reason, and then to make it worse getting lied to on the flyers. Personally, Id much much rather go to a small place with a wicked atmosphere like shhh or (what was) the Fez than fork out shed loads on a mediocre night!

I've seen Sanchez at SPIRIT in Dublin a year or two ago, and he was BRILLIANT!!!

Fair play. The thing I had issue with was him not even playing a third of his advertised set after lots of people paid a lot of money and travelled far and wide to see him. But in fairness he was good whilst he was on!

These sort of threads make me sad and happy at the same time - I had the absolute times of my life in clubs like Bed, Gatecrasher, Rise and The Arches, and now it's all gone.
Sad cos I would like to do it all again, and happy cos I have the memories (It will always be with you, indeed).
Good to know there's others on the forum who were there.

I used to LOVE Sanchez, saw him 'nuff times and that set at bed where he played quite hard, dark tribal stuff (in a kinda NewYork/Danny Tenaglia stylee) was by far the best. Was heavy but he still kept if funky. Oddly enough I saw him a week later at Bugged Out! and was gagging for more of the same, but he played a really soft garage-y set, which totally didn't fit with the music policy!

Morrillo isn't fit to wipe his a$$, never enjoyed his DJing, he's just a showy playboy who believes his own hype.

really? when me and some friends (who i'd hauled up from cambridge to come and see him) went to a bed night with him on....it was rubbish! crap music (he seemed to have a changed his style for the night), no atmosphere and people just milling about not really knowing what to do.....

....conversely...that following nye 2004 was absolutely rammed and rocking....and dunno who djs were other than the ever-present 'pav-on-percussion'.

Agreed but the first time i saw Morillo there, he was FANTASTIC!!

I'll never forget that moment when he dropped 2Risque - Let The Music Take Control. The roof went off!

Morillo was best when he did Space terrace back in the late 90's

The final ever night was Hed Kandi (NYE 2003) and it was rammed!

It was a shame it was too inconsistant, but it was the sign of the times. To have to finish Bed off with a hand bag pop house night like Hed Kandi, says it all. Thats why it was rammed. Bed lost a hell of a lot of money due to its inconsistency. People were not bothered about seeing superstar djs as much as they used to be.

Not in my experience. Brought some friends from Manchester to see Sandy Riviera - empty and boring, I was most embarrassed, the dancefloor was maybe a third full and many appeared to be dancing for the sake of it. Sandy was ace though. To think I'd dragged us away from the (then) consistantly awesome Sankeys for the night. F*ckin disgrace.

Bed appears to have had it's moments, but I don't think it can be held in the same light as other clubs in the UK. It may have been the best club in Sheffield (open to debate, of course), but I don't think it had the national standing some people think it did. Certainly doesn't belong on the same list as Shindig, Tribal/Redlight @ Sankeys, The End, Chibuku, Fabric etc.

Oh and one final moan - the soundsytem was APPALLING! :gag:

Hang on - where did I say you were comparing? It was I making the comparisons and pointing out that opinions may be slightly alterted by the 'big fish in a small pond' theory - hence saying best club in Sheff but not necessarily that good per say. I can comment thanks, if you'd read my previous threads I've been plenty times and had more average-to-bad nights than good. I just thought it was incorrect to say it was ALWAYS packed and ALWAYS great, when it wasn't. Danny Rampling & Cassius for example - not rammed and not a great atmosphere, very bog-standard funky house, distinctly ropey mixing from Cassius which not many people seemed that bothered by, again, dancing for the sake of it.

I've DJed there too, but don't get me onto what they're like to work for as I could rant for a long time with tales of how we were treated by them, but I shall retain my professional silence on that one.

Bed was a good night out but unfortunately like a few of us have pointed out to you before. It was too inconsistant and there were many nights it was dead. You can have one night with Sanchez and have capacity, then guaranteed the next week with a lesser known name it was quiet. That was the problem so you can not have Roger Sanchez or Master at Work or a massive name playing every week because it would not be cost effective. The brand was not pulling them in unfortunately the names were. Thats the difference between Bed and other corporate nights round the country. Love2, The Palais, in its hayday did have a good 2 year run, where it was constantly busy.

& that is why they had to close and bring Hed Kandi in to fill it on the last night. It would have been a risk if they were to bring any other name in as it would not have been busy. For Sanchez to play to a club that is a busy is poor for a dj of his calibre. He is used to fill venues twice over with queues going past the chicken shops.
I know it is your opinion and i am glad you enjoyed it as I love house music, but they pulled it because it was not busy to sustain the night making money..

it wasn't always busy on a saturday and sometimes when it was the white room was the place to be. i recall knee deep emptying the main room while the white room was jam packed of people grooving to some funk, soul, disco and rare groove. talented lads in that white room.

Sorry Simpy but you will find the music policy is slightly different.

and the other one (Bed) is more full on house music with some of the worlds leading house djs.

The 'White Room' for me was the place to be!
I went their quite a lot from late 2002 to the end, but I can't recall a BAD night down at 'Bed.'
The only bad night for me was when they wouldn't let me in cos of my t shirt, so, I caught a black cab back home (round trip cost me bout £15) as they said they would let me in once I got back. AND they DID!
Wasn't Security's falt - they didn't mind my t shirt (rasta smokin a spliff), it was some Gatecrasher event @ Bed and this guy with a clipboard who used to appear for those kind of events was bein too important.

Sheffield just isn't the same anymore!
Went down Sheffield last Friday night, but where has everyone gone?

Division Street and Devonshire Srtreet used to be rammed full of clubbers going here there and everywhere. Where were the Police - used to be loadz everywhere! But no more because they have ruined it, I say.

FEZ CLUB - no more (became "THE ROOM" now connected with "VIBE")
NICHE - raided
BED - closed
MATRIX BAR - not the same

Is just me or is SHEFFIELD not as gud anymore?

If you know of gud timez IN SHEFFIELD, RIGHT NOW let us know, cos I don't know of 'em.

Surely, there's betta places to go than DQ!
