I couldn't believe it when I read a report in this months New Scientist saying that the extensive filtration system used to produce my beloved Stella Artois uses processed intestine of a South Bavarian Boar, and thus they find traces of meat in the drink.

'The unique structure of the animal’s intestine allows a purer filtration of the beer and helps to create the unique taste.' Said Prof. Max Von Shuttlecoff of the Amsterdam Institute of Scientific Research.

As a vegetarian I am OUTRAGED that we have not been informed on the labelling of the beverage, and I will not be buying it any longer!!

In no way does this post have any truth in it at all

Actually, I thought that quite a few beers and wines were refined using meat products?

Isn't the traditional 'fining' method of clearing beers based on gelatine?

I'm not 100% sure here....I only drink the stuff.

Isinglass, a transparent, almost pure gelatin prepared from the air bladder of the sturgeon, is used for clarifying some beers.

SO, the great MPFC were not far wrong with:

These are the forces that drive the hand that drink TREADMILL! The mighty lager, with the world's first great taste of fish!

I know there are only a few beers that are really vegetarian. I'm not sure how reliable this is, but a few years ago I was told that Grolsch is one vegetarian one.

P.S. Just has a quick look on the Vegetarian Society website, and it does list Grolsch as being approved for vegetarians. It lists about 55 drinks, but most of them I have never heard of!:(

My vegetarian mate was gutted when he found this out a few months ago as he's been drinking Stella for years. I think it should be made clear what drinks are vegetarian. I'm sure there are a lot of people that are completely unaware.

I think vegetarianism is the principle of not eating meat than making sure your system is not polluted by a microgram of animal.

If everyone was vegetarian there would be no "animal processing" industry and traces of meat would not get into things.

Is this true? Is there a website I can read more about it?

Vegan maybe, but not vegetarian. Veggies still eat diary products (Eggs, Milk, butter, chesse). Also some 'veggies' eat fish - so there would still be "animal processing"

And how come almost everything these days 'May contain traces of nuts'?

You will also find many real ales are not suitable for vegetarians, as the finings that are used to help clear the beer come from fish.

However there are a number of small breweries that produce Vegetarian/Vegan beers.

How can any alcoholic beverage be vegetarian, when it is made by drowning saccharomyces cerevisiae (or carlsbergensis)in their own excrement? How come vegetarians eat fungi, which are not vegetative, but are organisms in their own right.

Now Phan you really have gone too far!
I'm in the unusual position of not drinking alcohol but existing on a diet solely comprised of meat!

Never heard about the boar thing before but I did know that stella, like most beers, isn’t vege safe because of the use of fish scales to filter the stuff and/or and extract from the swim bladder to clarify the stuff.

I never particularly liked stella anyway so it’s was no loss for me, as far as I’m aware the only cheap vege larger is Carlsberg or the pricier ones Becks & Grolsch are ok, all German beers are apparently vege safe due to ancient and still strictly enforced beer purity laws over there.

As far as I'm aware Cider is generally vege safe.

Obviously not, doesn't matter anyway as Stella isn't vege safe regardless.

I know it's not, The Vegetarian Society (http://www.vegsoc.org) tells veggies and vegans what is ok or not.

I wondered why I loved Stella so much.
Its the piggy that makes it jiggy. I hope they start breeding pigs just for their intestines, they can throw the rest of the animal away as far as I care, as long as it makes Stella better.

Damn Im so human!

"Not content with the "ignorance is bliss" attitude that I suspect the brewers are trying to cultivate by not labelling their products"

Yeah, those crafty brewers are trying to trick vegetarians into drinking their beer, I would assume anything thats doesn't say "suitable for vegetarians" on it, isn't, surely thats just common sense ? Or does everything that isn't suitable have to be labeled as such ?

Not when it comes to alcoholic drinks. They don't have to say what's in it, or whether it is veggie or not. Batemans XXXB is veggie, but it doesn't say so on the pump clip.

Can I just remind people that this was started as a wind up?
