O.K - I suspect I might be a serious minority here but I'll say it anyway.....

I don't "get" Grand theft auto. I don't like it and I don't think its a good game.

I'm playing GTA3 at the moment as I decided to play them through from that one and then vice city thus bringing me up to date with San Andreas.
I didn't play it when it came out cos it didn't do much for me when I tried it (I was into japanese shooters big time then). But with all the fuss recently I thought I'd better give it a go.

So I did. And as a driving game its crap (physics is awful, damage model average). As a shooter its awful (dodgy cameras and auto-target). The voice acting is o.k and I will admit the music via the radio stations are good.
But what else is there? Why all the fuss? What am I missing?

Do the sequals add much more? (I have tried vice city quickly and it seems much the same).

Or does anyone else agree?

Don't ask me, I'm still trying to figure out what Doom is all about.

Now you know where you are with Doom. Shoot monsters in the head with the biggest gun you can find! There doesnt seem to be the same level of satisfaction in killing things in GTA.
One, because they are people (call me a hippy but I prefer to shoot made up aliens in my games) and two because it is just really unspectactular (suppose its gone for realism).

Ah well, back to Gradius V.

Oh, I see.......... you're supposed to shoot the monsters. I kept trying to bond with them. No wonder I could never get anywhere :D

You are correct. You are in a serious minority :D

I finally completed all the missions a month or two ago...that game took away six months of my life :|

Fair enough Abdul - I'm gonna stick with it for a while, then give vice city a good go and if it ain't happening I'll ebay 'em.
Got too many other good games on the shelf at the moment (Ico, Burnout 3, PES4, Gradius V to name but a few..)

I started the thread by asking those who have played it that same question. You've not really give me any answers here other than confirming what I already knew (that LOADS of people do like it).

So you tell me. What is so good about it?

I can only tell you what I like about it. I think it's the scope of the game, the cities are huge and there are loads of places to explore, all beautifully rendered (as you climb the hills the city behind you dissapears into the smog, it looks great), you can wander around for days. The cities are "alive", the inhabitants go about their everyday bussiness regardless of you being there. You don't have to do what the game says, if you want you can stop doing the missions and become a taxi driver, or an ambulance driver, or a cat burglar for a few hours. You can modify your character and the way he looks will cause other characters to react differently to you. There are loads of vehicles to steal/drive. The story is good and the missions can be realy difficult and VERY frustrating, but if it was too easy it would be dull.

I honestly think it's the best game I've ever played.

And, somewhere in the game you get to steal a plane, skydive, drive powerboats, and use a jetpack !
