Albert T Smith 19-04-2007, 07:04 I use to organise a Sponsored up to, 12 person, team Raft Race on May Day Bank Holiday Sunday along a three miles section of the Sheffield Canal which started on the Tinsley side of the Broughton Lane/Greenland Road bridge and finished at the Canal Basin. The Tinsley Wire Company normally entered Two teams of twelve people and brought along with along with them whole families to cheer the teams on and assist. (Sometimes have a go at paddling, when they though that I didn't know!!!) From memory, I believe that they won the race once. But the main objective of the event was to raise sponsorship money for Muscular Dystrophy Research and they were one of the exceptional constant highly sponsored teams and raised many thousands of pounds over the ten years that I organised it. In future years, when a cure is found, I'm certain a lot of young people who would have suffered with Muscular Dystrophy, will read about it's medical fund raising history and be grateful to all those who contributed sponsorship to the Tinley Wire Industries Raft Race Team's sixsigma 21-04-2007, 20:21 I started my electrical contracting apprenicship there for a company called Sheffield Electric of Peter Street. Over the following years (1969 - 1974) I worked there a lot and the person that sticks in my mind is a guy called Larry Lamb who was a manager in the manitenance department. Health and safety mean't nothing then, I can remember clambering in the rafters above the zinc and acid baths putting up conduit runs. I still shiver now thinking about it. The family I'm married into (Savages, of Plumpers rd. ) worked there for donkey's years. Bryan worked there all his life as a joiner in maint, say from the 1940's onward. My father-in-law Fred, also worked in maint, as roofer mainly. I also worked there in the late 50's, building an extention on a site whch had previously been owned by William Cookes. Lock-House Lane was at the side of it. Horace Grimston was bloke in charge. People may remember Bryan by the wooden wheel-barrow he pushed around all the works, with his tools in. On his retirement party at Tinsley Club, we all had a laugh when they wheeled in a posh replica of this barrow! damo 22-03-2009, 00:35 my dad worked there around 70s 80s David Maxfield anyone know of him? maxvideo 22-03-2009, 16:58 :thumbsup:my dad worked there around 70s 80s David Maxfield anyone know of him? The little shop in No1 canteen sold fags and chocolate. We had a Christmas meal every year, no matter what shift you were on, turkey, little sausages with bacon wrapped round them, loads of veg and gravy and a bottle of beer, mince pie, Christmas pudding and custard for dessert. Children of employees had a Christmas party every year and Father Christmas would always find time to turn up and hand out a few presents. makapaka 30-04-2009, 19:10 in the late 80's early 90's they had a good saturday football team that my dad used to take us to watch. Mad Pierre 20-05-2009, 19:19 There was the Sports Club, with sections like Fishing, Football, Golf and Chess, successfully taking part in the Sheffield leagues. We even had a First Aid section which took part in local competitions and had an annual dance. We had a purpose built Sports and Social Club at Ferrars Road, with facilities for all the sports teams as well as providing a venue for retirements or award ceremonies. Ive some more photos to upload yet of the part-demolished Tinsley Wire site at Carbrook when I can get round to it. I didnt work there but always remember Tinsley Wire from when Ive passed it on the tram for many years. Sh2006. JOGI 28-02-2010, 20:11 Thanks for your info. about TWIL disappearing. I have many reasons to remember it by. Sheff2006 01-03-2010, 19:08 Just out of curiosity, when did Tinsley Wire change to Betafence and when did the Carbrook site first open? Sh2006. Billy Casper 02-03-2010, 11:42 The clubhouse was great! I went in there for many many years until it's closure in Jan 1995. JOGI 02-03-2010, 12:48 We had our weddng reception in the clubhouse in 1955. Sheffoo6, I always thought it was in the 1930's that the Belgian family started the firm. From that time onwards several of my in-laws worked there. The longest serving was my brother in-law Bryan Savage, who worked there all his working life, 14-60 years old. Maintenance Joiner. This is ironic 'cos he spent all those years maintaining the building, and after dying last month, they're pulling it down!. As for when it changed hands, I'm not sure. I was going to Hillsboro' several years ago and was surprised to see a building with the sign Bakaert(TWIL) on it. Bryan couldn't tell me. OWDTOM 02-03-2010, 14:59 During the mid-sixties I had quite a few dealings with Wilf Peacock who managed all the social events, banquets etc. An impressive figure resplendent in evening dress - anyone remember him? This must have been a different clubhouse, because the Tinsley Wire Sports & Social club i mean (Ferrars Road, Tinsley) didn't open until around the late 70's JOGI 02-03-2010, 19:16 Thanks Billy. I,ll ask my remaining in laws who attended the wedding. I have another nice memory of a clubhouse (this will be the one on Ferrars road). It was Bryan's retirement do and at the end there was great laughter when they wheeled in a replica of his hand-cart that he used to push round the works with compartments in it for tools and bits and pieces. Nice to reminisce. JOGI 03-03-2010, 17:06 So very easy to do,cos I've done exactly the same thing. Ever since we got married in '55, Ive said we had the reception at TWIL clubhouse.(not knowing Tinsley at that time). However Billy's post caused me to re-think,so Ive just rung my sister-in-law and she's put me right and said No, not Twil club!. It was a Function room, in a social club on Siemens road,Tinsley. So pleased to get that right. Regards. Sheff2006 07-03-2010, 20:36 As mentioned in my earlier post, here are my photos of what is left of Tinsley Wire.
