Yorkshire artspace :)

you should be able to google them, then get in touch with the artists to visit the studios

If that is a little daunting, they do have open days occasionally

The Open Up (http://www.openupsheffield.co.uk/2007/) event is happening soon, too. That's your best bet. Artists all over the city open their studios and homes to the public (for free) to view their work, and chat to the artists themelves. Every artist has a thumbnail piccy to give an idea of style in the brochure, and you can visit quite a few in one day. They're listed by postcode. You could even commission something. :)

You should have asked, I'd have done you one. What are you looking for a picture of, exactly?

Well, that's difficult because I know nothing about art,to be honest, and need to get out there and look at some. I have a large blank wall above my fireplace, and would like a painting with creams, dark and light browns and yellow. It could be a picture, or an abstract(?correct terminology). I'm being vague, but as yet I'm not sure. I'd know it if I saw it!

Open Up is terrific; it's always nicer to buy work from an artist you've met. The right painting brings a lifetime of pleasure, and for that alone can prove an excellent investment.

For many of us, the pictures our parents had hanging on the walls at home are one of the most evocative memories of where we were brought up. Good luck with your search.

Thanks. My husband and I will enjoy our search, and buy the one we love. It's funny but my 8 year old produced a lovely picture, and it's been framed. His head teacher has a copy of it on her office wall!
