I recently downloaded what was supposed to be a bike picture. However, all that is there is that icon (that I think originates from windows XP) of a sailing boat in front of a sunset. The problem is it just sits there in my documents. I cannot delete, rename, move, put in a folder or edit it. When I try to open it I just get a sort of blank page. When I right click it the only options that appear are preview, edit ,set as desk top ,open with, send to. These options do not seem to work on it. I have done a virus check and all my files appear to be clean. It does not responds to the normal delete key

With my other files including photos, I have the options to cut, copy, delete, rename and look at the properties box when I right click. I have even done a restore to previous date but it is still the same. I am using XP. What can I do?

restart yer system, before opening any progs try to delete it then,, it sounds like another prog may be using it, which is why you cannot delete it...

Hi Donky-

Thanks but no that does not work. There is no option to delete in the drop down menu from right clicking, and as i mentioned there is no response from the delete key.

use a program called unlocker, its free and comes in pretty handy sometimes.

unlocker looks good... I've always used MoveOnBoot, but this looks better... I'll give it a try.

EDIT: Tried it and it does the job perfectly. Thanks for the pointer!

Just as a matter of interest, what is the name of the file you're trying to delete?

Are you looking at the My Pictures folder, and trying to delete that? I think that's a system folder, so it can't be deleted.

Have you done a search for the picture you downloaded, in case you've put it in the "wrong" folder? I've done that loads of times.

If none of the above, what file extension does the file have?

Thanks to everyone who suggested methods to solve this problem. I have now sorted it.

I had to move everything out of the folder containing the rogue file. Then, with only this rogue file left in the folder (which was "my music" folder), i deleted the folder. Then i recreated a folder called "my music" and moved everything back, leaving the rogue file etc in the recycle bin (which has now been emptied). I still don`t know why i was unable to delete the file on its own.
