View Full Version : Noisy Thudding Water Pipes
hevydevy 16-04-2007, 17:38 Hi,
does anyone know why my water pipes whould make a thudding sound whenever a tap is turned off, or when the washing machine has finished drawing water? It's really quite loud all around the house - they've always done it since I've lived here but I'm seriously wondering if there's anything actually wrong with them...
Don_Kiddick 16-04-2007, 17:44 We have a similar plumbing poltergeist... The lav at work sounds like Chewbacca from star wars when it's flushed :hihi:
Rivelin6 16-04-2007, 17:44 Usually an air lock in the pipes. Mine did it for a long time but then I got the landlord in to bleed the pipes. They found no air vents on the radiator to actually do the job so had to fit them however they came today to services my gas applicances and it started up again::huh:

If they were doing the gas work they should not have been messing with the water.
Gas engineers for gas, plumbers for water.
newfgreen 16-04-2007, 18:22 There may be a kink in the pipe, like a dint in the pip and this could cause water to back up as such and may creat noise.

I lived in a flat that had this - its called water hammer (I think). You can get a device installed to stop it. Google it, there are loads of solutions.
Yellowrose 16-04-2007, 20:36 I thought it was called "plumbers knock"!
It started to happen in our old house when we had new taps put in the bathroom. When you turned the cold off it went "thunk" downstairs near the stop cock. Funnily enough, turning the stop cock off and then turning it on but not fully on seemed to stop it.
Paolo Coopio 16-04-2007, 21:02 My old flat used to do it when the heating came on at 6am.
Id still be half asleep, jump out of bed and chase the banging along the pipes suspicious that one of the pipes may burst.
This can also be caused by the ball cock in the header tank. When you turn a tap off, especially if you do it quickly, it can cause a sudden increase in water pressure which sets the valve oscillating. Try turning the pressure down at the stop cock, It's easy to do, free and it should work.
huggybabe 16-04-2007, 21:19 but mine makes noise all the time not when taps are on?????
about 20 mins after switching heating or hot water on (boiler)it starts sounds like its gonna take off rattling banging
It's called kettling. You can buy additives for your heating circuit that should cure this, B & Q, or a plumbers merchant should supply. Means your boilers getting a bit old and scaled-up.

The pipes under the floor could be close together and some clips may have come off the wall/underfloor what holds the pipe in place. This could make the pipes clash and vibrate against each other.
huggybabe 16-04-2007, 21:27 ok thanks will try work out if i can find where its coming from hope its not under floor
hevydevy 17-04-2007, 20:52 Ta, closing the tap a bit where the water comes into the house has sorted it out, much appreciated!
