The old crooner apparently admiring the Nazis as style icons:

Daily Mail article (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=448753&in_page_id=1773)

My dear gentlemen, the Nazis knew how to put themselves in the limelight and present themselves.

Leni Riefenstahl's movies and Albert Speer's buildings and the mass parades and the flags - just amazing. Really beautiful.

It's not clear what effect this may have on his Marks & Spencer modelling contract but if summer lederhosen appear in the Blue Harbour range we'll know they were cool about it. :)

Hmmm........

I wonder if his next album will include those all time favourites

"Wir fahren gegen England"
"Die Fahne Hoch"
"Kampflied der Nationalsozialisten "
"Deutschland Erwache"

Perhaps a 'lounge lizard' version of 'Springtime for Hitler'?

Talk about foot in mouth. Sorry....jackboot in mouth. :)

Seriously though, it's such a daft thing to be quoted as saying. I would have expected soemone of his experience in showbiz to know that cerain things are just not clever to do.

Like a lot of things in Bryan Ferry's career, Bowie beat him to it first. :)

So true!

I do hope we're not heading back towards a flirtation with Nazi Chic again.

Albert Speer's buildings were amazing though, some of the planned buildings would have been on a massive scale.

Amazing what you can do with slave labour after you've created all that Lebensraum to build on.

Are we saying that there are certain opinions that cannot be expressed here becuase of their associations?

It's perfectly possible to admire the art, fashion and architecture of the Nazi era without subscribing to the political ideology.

Well, we are discussing those things, aren't we?

So those opinions CAN be expressed here, can't they?

But 2 of the particular items for admiration that Ferry chose - Leni Riefenstahl's films and the parades and rallies - were deeply connected to the ideology.

If you look at 'Triumph of the Will' - that was a pure recruiting film for the Nazi Party. To a lesser degree 'Olympiad' was designed as a paen to the Aryan ideals - unfortunately for the Nazis, Jesse Owens came along and rather ruined that idea.

And the parades had nothing to do with art, culture, engineering or architecture - just the politics of power.

So - HAD the comments been made in a way that didn't specifically refer to the Nazi Party, I think there'd be less potential for approbation - but ferry is just doing the intellectual posturing equivalent of Prince Harry (or a Camden Town punk) wearing a Nazi armband.

Let's not forget, Hitler had a lovely 'tache. And his hair was rather dapper.

And what did a cathedral represent in mediaeval times but Power?

These buildings are pretty awe inspiring today, imagine how they would have appeared to the average peasant. They were incredible feats of engineering and were architecturally stunning, they contained fantastic artwork and were designed to have wonderful accoustics. Their purpose is to demonstrate the power of the church and to provoke awe and respect and maybe originally fear.

No-one says we shouldn't appreciate them because they were built upon the exploitation and oppression of the masses. No-one holds them up as examples of the injustice inherent in the system.*

*except Eric Idle maybe

Indeed - most public buildings have always been an expression of tempoarl power and authority.

But we're not talking about a medieval cathedral here, but of events designed explicitly to portray the might of a militaristic power to it's neighbours as well as as a celebration of that power to it's people. And it happened 70 years ago, not 700 years ago.

We're talking about specific instances of power politics in the iddle of the 20th Century. I think you're stretching the analogy here, Tricky.

I think his son was one of the hunting, shooting, fishing crowd who invaded the Commons a couple of years ago?

Don't know much about his politics, though.

I believe he is an active member of the Countryside Alliance, one of those who 'stormed Parliament' a year or so ago, to protest about the anti-foxhunting laws. Being a bunch of young toffs, they merely got a slap on the wrist for it. They were lucky they didn't get shot, as their stupid stunt was carried out in the wake of the London bombings. Arrogant t***ers

It also started modern cinematography and has been widely copied ever since it was first shown. If Ferry had restricted his comments to how influential and groundbreaking the Nazis were in modern art, culture and er, rocket science, he would have been on the money.

Hmmm.... Countryside Alliance or Nazis, I think there's a significant difference, unless you propose erecting a holocaust memorial to the six million foxes killed inthe last cetury :hihi:

If you're comparing style though the nazi uniforms win hands down on hunting pinks.

Being a member of the Countryside Alliance and possibly even an arrogant t###er hardly makes him a fascist.

After all wasn't Hitler an anti hunting vegetarian?

Don't let your own prejudices get in the way of the facts.

Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers individual and other societal interests inferior to the needs of the state,

Pls read Otis Ferry's comments about his reasons for leaving this country and moving, possibly, to Argentina.
On the basis of the definition above he is definitely not a fascist in that he totally derides the notion of state control and responsibility.

However, both his and his fathers utterances do reveal themselves to be very selfish and self interested.

Bryan Ferry is a complete and utter pillock for the following reasons: being a pro hunting scumbag; having a pro hunting twit of a son, and; his crimes against music in the 80's.

Why is it that lefties prefer name-calling to logical argument? Personally I thought Ferry's music in the 1980s was rather good - classy, stylish and aspirational.

Huh... I don't like the countryside alliance or anyone associated with hunting so, in my opinion, I'm free to call them what I like. Anyway, music is subjective and we will agree to differ, but get one thing straight I'm no leftie. Thank you!!
