View Full Version : Lost in Translation
not a bad film, now i've managed to watch it fully. Especially if ( the guys on the forum ) want to see Scarlett Johansson in nothing but a pair of pants for most of the film.
Bill Murray is class, always so funny without really trying.:P
EdnaKrabappe 15-04-2007, 22:16 There's a better film on now though in the form of A clockwork orange.
Watched it before, and I don't think I appreciated it as much then when it came out. The first scene was so funny with the Japanese lady who went into his room. lol. I couldn't help laughing.
Am watching Clockwork Orange also, and the first scenes were quite shocking. It definitely broke that unspoken rule of movies whereby it left the scene to be more realistic than it ought to be! Felt a bit sick at the graphical contents. Modern movies are more suggestive, and unrealistic, but that's so OTT. :(

Not quite as funny as 'Sinatora'.....'more intense'....or even...'Loja Moore' :hihi: :hihi:

:o :o :o I'm not happy about missing that! That will teach me for watch Equilibrium instead. :(
Beakerzoid 15-04-2007, 23:41 I really fail to see what everyone went on about with lost In Translation. I've watched it once and really don't want to watch it again. Watching paint dry would be much more interesting! It gets 2 out of 10 in my books, and that is only because the presence of Bill Murray automatically grants 1, and Scarlett Johannson grants another.
The problem with the film for me is the characters; I just don't care about any of them.
Bill Murray is in Japan for a weekend shooting a whiskey commercial, and is getting a stupid amount of money for it (I forget the actual amount as have only seen the film once)- well boo hoo! My heart bleeds for you mate.
Scarlett Johanson has recently graduated from Yale, and can afford to waste her days wandering around Japan while she searches for meaning in her life. Well, after I graduated, I had to get a job almost immediately so I can afford to live, so excuse me if your problems don't really concern me.
so the two of them wander around for a while, see the sights, laugh at some Americans singing karaoke, and then leave. So what?
I love this film - not saying it's great or anything (oalthough i do think it's a 'good' film), just personal preference. it's one of the few films that i can watch over and over...the only thing that spolis it for me is scarlett's husband - the guy is presented as lacking substance and i really can't see the conenction between him and his wife at all (i.e. for them to be married). i'd have liked his character (and/or part) to be more substantial, just so that i could get a 'feel' for their relationship, but other than that i think it's an intelligent, atmospheric, charming comedy/character study, and most character studies are often not appreciated by people who prefer more 'action'.
I would like to quote Paul Calf in relation to this film, but forum rules don't allow swearing - I paid to see this at the cinema, walking out I felt like I had been mugged and violated. Its that booooooring - i wish I had be violated:hihi:
funkymiss 16-04-2007, 16:01 I absolutely love it! Saw it in the cinema a few years ago and I loved the pace and style of it. I found it very beautiful to watch and love the way you can really feel their disorientation and lonliness. Coppola just captures something really unique... I think it's that feeling you get when you're in an alien environment and it's as if you're in a muted dream.
That's what I thought anyway!
Good film
Love the pace to the film....a real slow burner:thumbsup:

Very well said - that's a lovely description. And you're right about the husband being short-changed a bit by the film - he and the Scarlett Johannson character were very young marrieds, and it was stretching credibility just a little bit to think they'd have drifted apart so far, so fast.
But for me, it's essentially the story of two lost souls finding (temporary?) sanctuary with each other.
Beautiful.

Yeah I agree, watched bits of it last night after watching it once already, and was still as bored as the last time. Nothing really happens!
pinklady 16-04-2007, 19:10 I was a bit left in limbo after the film, .... it was nicely shot, good cast, but nothing really happened. Two lonely insomniacs developed a friendship whilst in japan ... ... it was hardly thought provoking, tear jerking, thrilling or captivating.

I guess it helps to have a degree of sensitivity to appreciate such a beautiful and subtle film.

I agree, with my deep feelings i couldn't help but shed a tear for the man who was getting paid $2,000,000 for a few days work. Mark me down for putting the film as exquisitely average.

i completely agree with you. i started watchin this film a month or so ago, and only got half way through. watched it in full yesterday and it wasnt worth the wait! nothing happens!
yeh there a few funny scenes, and bill murray is a good actor. but i cant see anything beautiful in the film.
guess i cant see the subtlety.......!
Don't think Bill Murray is going to do Brian Ferry out of a job with his rendition of More Than This.
Wonder if they will get it together in the sequel?

Add me to the list of people who didn't enjoy it. The strange thing that I've noticed with this film - certainly more than any other, it's fans seem to be quite vicious and nasty against those who didn't enjoy it. Starsparkle's comments are a typical example, almost as if we're beneath them for not comprehending.

I think her comments had more to do with me, not the film.
I'm adding myself to the 'thumbs down list' as well, not one I enjoyed at all.

I wouldn't say it's one of my favourite film, but I did appreciate it a lot more this time round, than the first time round.
Well, maybe the lacking of substance is just that? Because he can totally relate and laugh at silliness than intellectual chats with that other model(?) who sang badly, than he could with his own wife? It just goes to show that people marries, and they settle without really knowing their partners and connecting. Which, from my own observation, just sums up reality in a way.
I thought that it was a good film, cos it portrayed people who travels for their jobs and careers. Those who have to stay in hotel rooms, yet sustain relationships all the way across the world over the phone with their loved ones.

"To think, we got paid for this c**p!"
or
"Me whispering will wind the hell out of them for ages!"

Aye, I often get the "How can YOU not like it? I thought you were a film buff! OMG this is THE best film ever made!" and the occasional "Oh, you were probably just bored that there were no action scenes in it!" from condescending idiots who know nothing about my taste in film!
Sofia Coppola is extremely over-rated, as is this film.

Apparently that character was based on Spike Jonze, whom Coppola was with for a fair while.

Have you ever seen the Virgin Suicides?

Once upon a time, I'd be sooo excited at discussing films with my mates at uni. Did you see this bit? Ooo, did you see that bit? What do you suppose it meant? blah de blah de blah... The process of discovering things for the first time between your mates is quite enjoyable as a social process.
Nowadays...it's a case of..."Gaaaawd, do you think I am thick or what?!?!?"...."Gaaaaawd, am I a moron?!?!".....
:hihi:

I just imagined it to be something like, "I hope you'll find yourself" or "have a great life?"... I can't remember whether that was what he mumbled or I was imagining it.
I've seen the film twice as well...and to be honest, interpret it as you will. It's a film. It's probably made for a certain reason and has a certain point, but it does not mean that you cannot appreciate it, or not, as the case may be, on different levels of association.

beakerzoid's idea :hihi:
cressida 18-04-2007, 09:07 I noticed a newspaper had given it five stars, so I gave it a try, turned off after about twenty minutes as it didn't seem to get moving
He whispered "see you in the sequel but meantime leave everyone in suspense".

As you say, Bago, it is a film of many levels - a film where what is NOT said is at least as important as what is explicitly stated. Much is said through the actors' eyes and glances. It is a very sophisticated and adult film, which is probably not designed to be appreciated by all and sundry.
