On Friday last my daughter and I went to Hagg House Allotments and I was shocked to see what an overgrown jungle it had become. I am originally from Sheffield and when I was a youngster about 40 years ago my dad had allotment No 144 on Hagg House Allotments. In those days every allotment was tended and looked after with dedication, it is such a shame that it has developed into the jungle it is today. I just visited Hagg House Allotments for sentimental reasons and I hope that in the future it will be the same again as it was all those years ago.

I'm afraid vandalism is a prime cause of folks giving up on allotments....it's all over the city. People get disillusioned and throw the towel in.
Also, I think some underestimate how much work is involved in an era when many people expect quick results for little effort and also when there are so many other distractions/pastimes available

Hi Ned Ludd

I had to smile to myself when I read your comment about people wanting results for little effort when there are so many other distractions/pastimes available.

The Hagg Lane Allotments have become a popular place for homosexuals meeting up and engaging in their sexual practices for some years now.

It is so bad that a lot of people will not even drive down Hagg Lane for fear of being branded as a homosexual.

There are always complaints being made to the police about this but I suppose it is a difficult job to police activities in a very overgrown area with many escape routes.

I do take your point though that many people either haven't got the time or they get disheartened when their crops are vandalised, stolen or damaged.

Not so Happy days!

Please go and visit the Sheffield Allotment / Gardening section and see the thread about Hagg House allotments, a lot of people have recently taken allotments and they are forming an association so things will be getting better

I am pleased that people have taken on allotments at Hagg House, and that things will get better. It just saddens me that vandalism and other things are the crux of the matter that have resulted in the desolation and destruction of the allotments. I just wish that I lived a bit nearer to Sheffield, and I would only be too happy to help clear some of the rubbish and debris, for I live in the Rotherham area and the only form of transport that is available is Mainline buses.

Hi Ned Ludd
The Hagg Lane Allotments have become a popular place for homosexuals meeting up and engaging in their sexual practices for some years now.

I blame the Council for closing all the public lavatories!
These people need a different type of tool in their hands and start clearing some overgrown plots
