Hi,

For one of our assignments, we have to look at comparing operating systems, so I have a few questions.

What are the main differances between 2000 Prof. vs XP?

And what is the order of O/S.

I am sure it is: (feel free to correct as I don't trust the information she gives at times), also see other thread on questions.

Windows 3.1
Windows 3.11 - apparently this is the same but 3.11 has better/extra networking capabilities

Windows 95 1995
Windows 95 OSR 2 (is this like saying SE) ?
Windows NT (New Technology) (Released: 1996)
Windows 98 (Released: 1998 )
Windows 98 SE (Released 1998 )
Windows Me (Released: 2000) (the techie guy claims it is like third edition that tries to look like 2000). I told him it was crap - he thinks it is reasonable.
Windows 2000 Prof (is there a home??)
Windows XP

So, what is the differance between them both - the teacher claims there are only three... surely there must be more than that..?!

Thanks very much in advance...

Alex

From what I understand XP takes the best bits from NT/2000 and 98, then combines them into a package for the home user.

There aren't any major differences between 2000 and XP, they both can run on NTFS format, both are stable, etc. XP just has a few extras like system restore. XP is also supposed to be more Games friendly .

2000 Prof - it can run FAT 16, FAT 32 and NTFS, can XP run FAT 16 ? It can run FAT 32 and NTFS, but can it run FAT 16?

Cheers

What worries me more is the fact that only Microsoft operating systems are mentioned.
Do they get a big discount or something?

It would be infintely more beneficial to learn what is the difference between say Solaris and NT than between any 2 crap MS OS's.

ok here's some info for ya... Windows 95 actually had 3 editions to my knowledge... there's 95a, 95b and 95c... I cant remember the differences but there were some big ones between 95a and 95b...

also, pretty sure 98SE was released in 1999... might be wrong...

Windows ME was microsofts way to make a bit of money before they finished XP... ME is like a bodge between 98 and XP, they threw in some XP components to see how they'd work...

how did it work? well... ME is the ****tiest thing to hit the shelf...

also your neglecting the fact that NT had various versions too... NT3 was a bit like 3.1 if i remember correctly... it was 16bit like 3.1...

NT4 came out around the time of win 95 and was 32bit...

the main differences between 2000 and XP? 2000 was specifically written for office/server environment, thats why it has huge issues with playing games and such as it was written to handle directx with as much compatibilty as windows 98 and such was...

XP was written more with usabilty in mind, Microsoft is trying to engolf as many people as possible because the market is slowly being taken away from them from competitors like Unix/BSD for servers and Linux varients for desktop users...
