View Full Version : Why does the world stop on a Sunday? Life doesn't.
Last night my partners car ended up on fire, quite how we don't yet know.
The insurance people say they can;t process the claim today because it's a Sunday and they don't have access to the computer system.
Then they said they couldn't have the vehicle recovered... because it's a Sunday. As I pointed out, insurance isn't cheaper on a Sunday so we shouldn't get less of a service.
Then we spoke to the home insurance people about ehe contents as we've now lost our twins car seats and double pushchair - can;t do anything cos it's a flipping SUNDAY.
Now I realise that Sunday is traditionally a religious day of rest but in the modern days and times what use is a company who answer the phone then do nothing? What's the point in having peopple even answer the phone?
So, my partner needs his car for work, we need the car seats and pram to get our twins about and yet after several hours of calls we still don't have a clue about anything, we are absolutely none the wiser about anything at all.
CorkerSWFC 15-04-2007, 08:49 Is a religous day for me as its football football football all day long that my religion.
saturday and sunday are the busiest days in my week.
Sorry to hear about all the hassle youv,e had to put up with.
Relax and wait till Monday.
ChrisTodd 15-04-2007, 09:05 With the advent of computers, call centres and 24 hour working, there is no real reason why the world should stop on a Sunday.
But for some reason the ols fashioned traditions still hold.
If a call centre for insurances or whoever can't actually process anything, there is little point in them working really.

I remember as a child how you had to get things done early in the day on a Sunday. Most businesses closed so people could spend time with their families, but it haven't seen it like that in years. There's no escape from obligations or a day off anymore. The only exception I've found is trying to pay bills (which I just tried to do, but couldn't) or check on something online in the middle of the night. Many websites perform their upgrades and maintainence then.

That's the power of the Christian church for you. Working practices should be brought up to date with today's multicultural Britain (and it'd be politically correct too!)
Plain Talker 15-04-2007, 09:38 that stinks, Zebra... :(
how aggravating for you. I'd be fuming.
  next time, you'll just have to make sure your car waits to combust until their office hours...  how thoughtless of the car to burn out-of-hours! (  make sure you chastise it well for its thoughtlessness! )
If Sunday was just another day then we wouldnt be able to enjoy Saturday nights out and relaxing with mates for the majority of the weekend. To suggest that we should work as normal because it would make life easier for others is just selfish. People need time together to chill out, and Sunday is that day for most people.
Did I suggest you should work as normal? No. I suggested that the companies who provide services 'round the clock' so to speak ought to do the job properly.
I've been looking for the part of my original post which says that everyone at home on a Sunday should immediatley go to work, y'know, the selfish part you mentioned. Tragically I can't find it so I guess it must have been removed by the secret ghost moderator.
I do think that insurance claims should be processed immediately. It shouldn't matter what day of the week it is, the insurance is still valid, the claim is still valid, the company are just slackers for manning the phones for no reason.
Obviously you forgot to put your empathy head on this morning.
Some of us don't go out on Saturday nights because we have twins to care for and get to bed at a reasonable hour, the world does not revolve around revellers, therefore I think the companies who claim to have a wrap around service should ensure they do precisely that, some of us still have a life on a Sunday which doesn't involve hangovers or church.

You could make the same argument for Friday nights, for people who work on Saturdays, yet Saturday working is far more common and acceptable.
There's no reason why Sunday couldn't be 'just another day', people could still work a 5 day pattern and have two days off, but it wouldn't necessarily be Saturday and Sunday!
CorkerSWFC 15-04-2007, 11:13 It is old fashioned these days every thing being shut or closing early like half ten shutting in the working mens clubs.
Things like that need to be updated, or are companys and buisness,s afraid of paying the extra wages.
I guess many companies choose a sunday for doing back-ups, updating and maintenance on their systems. It needs doing at some point and sunday is as good a day as any.
