After my recent thread on dog walks, many sound interested so lets get planning! Never planed anything like this, so here goes, help welcome.

Rivelin Sounds a good choice to ease us in, good for short and long walks plenty of stop points, short walkers can rest together long walks can continue on, a park if you fancy taking kids and good have a central meet up for a good natter at the beginning and end of time there... Any other suggestions for different place's?

Whats the best date for everyone? Theres a poll to see what suit's us all and we'll go with majority! Is that ok?

Do we need to know any thing else ?

I'd love to come along. I don't have a dog, but I think it would be a nice thing for the pet people to do. There ought to be an option on the poll 'any day is OK'.

Don't worry Zoboz, I used to be one of the lynch pins of the walkers group, organising a walk is no hass. In fact in future I don't mind organising routes myself. :)

Of course, everyones welcome  Riverlins a little far for me (i'll find away there). It seems central for everyone, i hope! plus there's pubs if people fancy a drink and place's for a picnic's. The poll is multi choice so if you can do all then please pick em all.

I personally, won't be attending :) Nothing personal but I wouldn't want to put either of mine in that situation.

However, can I suggest somewhere a little more open? Depending on how many attend an how many dogs there are, it would be pretty intimidating for other walkers at Rivelin, the paths are very narrow and even my two can intimidate some people not to mention a big group of dogs taking up the path. It could also spark arguments with other dogs up there.

I won't be going because even though I doubt Takara would have a major problem with it, I don't think she'd enjoy it and remember that the likelihood is if two dogs have a bit of a spat the whole thing could escalate to include more members of the group.

I suppose I see it a little bit like if someone dragged me off to meet a load of people I didn't know who all had different levels of manners and then forcing me to spend time with them.

Hope you enjoy your walk but think about making it somewhere a little more open for the sake of the dogs in the group as well as respecting other walkers in the area :)

At the end of each term of doggy training with Millhouses Dog Training everyone goes on a big walk at Wyming Brook. I was rather skeptical of how this would work out as there was about 20 + dogs and some just done their first set of classes so not that obedient :loopy: But both times we went it was great! The dogs had a fantastic time! And it seemed to do all the owners and dogs good to let their hair down. Not everyone could recall their dog as they were so excited, but it didnt matter as they were not going to leave such a great party and all stuck together. Amazingly there were no scraps. In such a big group the dogs seemed to sort themselves out, and mainly just got very dirty! Though all the dogs that came were quite sociable and none of the owners were too precious about their dogs getting into a muddy tussle. Most people we passed were simply amused to see a big pack of dogs charging around enjoying themselves. They didnt bother people as they were having such a great time with each other.

I would like to come if I am around. My dogs are both very playful off the lead. One of them can be a bit boisterous initially with his play but we can reign him in if thats the case. Will see who is going and what the plan is. I dont mind not joining if people want quiet dogs only there.

Well quiet dogs would count Molly out, as a choc lab many words describe her...............quiet aint one of em! :hihi: Im sure an open area would be better, I think we would have more chance of being able to see them all! Rivelin has lots of places to lose very excited dogs. Like Lotti said somewhere open might be better at first.

Does anyone agree somewhere other than rivelin?
:)

Sounds like you had great fun. Well my dogs a puppy and he's just learning the basics so don't know how quiet he'll be :hihi: or good:D

I think all dogs/pups quiet or not should be welcome as long as their good with other dogs :( i have a cairn terrier and she's 2yrs old called phebie, i can't take her with us as she barks at people and snaps at dogs (shes protective) while were out, shes fine in the house but walkings a nightmare, so just be sensible if your dog doesn't get on with other dogs consider other people and their dogs, you can always come with out your dog and enjoy the walk:thumbsup:

Im from Parson Cross so could go together when my doggie gets a bit older. I would love to go on one of these walks but it will be a few months before my doggie is up to it.

The good thing about Graves Park is that we could all meet at the Cafe then people could choose to go all round the woods or just stay in the field by the cafe - depending on what they're able to cope with ;)
We went there with my parents & their elderly dog at Easter for that reason, so that they could do a shorter walk while we gave Gadget a good run, but it turned out that our elderly dog was enjoying himself so much he wanted to do the full walk too! Aww I haven't seen him with that much energy for ages

Gadget seems to 'like' other dogs more when we go to Graves Park than anywhere else :loopy: I think its cos he's enjoying himself so much there & is so carefree, he's less 'on-guard'/defensive.

Can I suggest that before everybody meets that some ground rules are established so any potential problems have been thought through?

Ground rules? Its just people meeting up for a friendly dog walk isnt it?

Graves park is abit far for me as wherever we go we will have to get the bus but if thats whats best for everyone else then the bus it will be. Im easy people! ;)

Yes - ground rules

not every dog owner has the same standards of training, and there are some who have a 'they'll sort it out between themselves' policy, so it would be helpful for it to be established whether this is a leads only walk, or a free for all romp

I have a dog who's back has already been broken whilst playing with another dog, so we'd be making our decision to attend based on how people envisage walking taking place

'Ground rules' should also include a reminder for attendees to take poo bags ;)

.... and one other thing that sprang to mind was a problem that Lotti has had with a regular dog walking group, and I've had in other settings.... people feeding dogs without asking first. This can distract them from training at the least, and at the worst can have medical implications (some treats are way too rich for a sensitive stomach, and I'd go nuts if somebody gave Brude the chocolate they feed their own dog)

If everybody knows what the score is before they turn up, it's less likely there'll be a problem ;)

Some valid points Strix. Mine will be off lead when I think its appropriate and on lead when I feel they should be. I dont intend to feed anyone elses dog tit bits but if i wanted to I will ask the owner first. Poo bags are always with me. I dont want to agree to 'put my dogs on a lead' as they will be off the lead at certain points and on at others. Obviously if someone in the group wants to come but doesnt want dogs near them off the lead then when I walk with them I will put my dogs on leads. However if people are expecting me to say at this point my dogs will be on and at this point off then they will be dissapointed.
Not rules as such just discussing things before hand to make things easier when we get there : )

It's a norwegian elkhound - and quite a large one
Brude's only a beagle - probably less than half the size

zoboz111
17-04-2007, 19:48
Well mine's a pup so he'll mainly be on his lead, unless i feel he's safe and may be tiered so if he makes a dash (like he did in the park the other day, to play football with 2 lads) i can catch him :hihi: but he'll most likely be on a lead all day ;) i don't mind if other's want their dogs off the lead but this will be a first for me :)

So ground rules so far :- bring poo bags and don't give other dogs treats just you own dog/s.

Oh dear thats awful :o hows your dog now ?

Strix
17-04-2007, 21:24
oh he made a full recovery after a very hefty vets bill, intensive physio and at least two years of rebuilding the muscle he lost whilst laid up. He still has some disc material stuck to his spinal chord, but the surgeon drilled a hole in the bone to accomodate that so it doesn't cause the crushing that was giving him paralysis

I've every reason to be one of those people some dog people hate - being protective of my dog ;)

Not according to the numpties we met whilst trying to get him fit again. I'd get some right cross people letting their dog romp up to us whilst I pinned Brude between my legs to stop any dominance/play/mounting.

'He's alright - he only wants to play',
well do I look like I want my dog to play, isn't it a bit obvious I don't? :suspect:
'mine has a broken back'.
'Oh sorry. Here *insert dog name*'
dog ignores them coz it's used to being able to play

Bloody nightmare it was :(

tia will be off her lead unless she starts gettin to giddy with other dogs but when in greaves park she normally plays wi other dogs. She`s friendly with everyone a bit bouncy when meetin new people but we`ll try and calm her down but we`ll be there just set a time glad to see other members

Know how you feel Lotti. I would love to come too, but I dont think the dobermutt will be comfortable in a big group of dogs. She's usually a bit of a loner - I dont know if this is a typical dobe thing or just Ailsa. She's always been fine when we've gone out with our friend with the ex-guide dog and one other dog, they always have a whale of a time, but dunno what she'd be like with a group, which is a shame because it would be lovely to meet up with the gang and meet all thses lovely dogs we hear so much about. Hope it turns out to be a lovely day for you all xK

Obviously you know best for your own dog but if you wanted to you could try bringing her to see what she is like, on lead at first and then off lead or if she is unsettled you could take her home. If you would prefer to keep her on lead then when we walk with you then I will put ours on lead, as im sure most people would.
We dont all have to walk around in one big group anyway. You will probably find people go their own ways or into smaller groups. Saying that are we even sure how many people are actually coming? Its a shame if you cant come but its understandable. :)

Can I just bring to your attention that I have a sponsored greyhound walk arranged for Sunday 29th April 2007 in Graves Park. It's all booked through the council and will start at 11.00-11.30 and takes in a circuit between Hemsworth Road Car Park and the Cafe. I'm just flagging this up so our walks don't clash. At the moment, I am expecting to host around 30 greyhounds. All will be on leads, but it's going to be pretty busy in the park at that time. Sheffield Retired Greyhound trailer will be on site selling greyhound-related merchandise and offering information on our adoption process. We will be off site at 3.30-4.00pm.

If this is going ahead ?

What about a sponsored charity walk around the park ~? for a local dog rescue perhaps or the kids hospital ?. that way "kill two birds with one stone " so to speak

thoughts ?
