View Full Version : Bollywood - a load of rubbish?
The Indians are well known for copying basically every successful western movie there is from The Matrix to Mission Impossible with cheesy actors and actresses, crap special effects and a song every 5 minutes.
Is it just me who cannot fathom why there is so much interest and popularity for an industry built upon copyright rule breaking, useless acting and 'cheese' in copious amounts.
Read it here if you dont believe it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bollywood_and_plagiarism)
There are now also indian gangsta ( cough! ) rappers! I've watched a few on some of the sky channels and I haven't laughed so much in ages. Load of rubbish!:gag: ... these guys should be on Eurotrash at best.
Beakerzoid 15-04-2007, 00:25 Hang on....are you suggesting that everything that comes out of Hollywood is original? I recall that even Tarantino admitted to lifting whole scenes from various films in his career (notably in reservoir Dogs where the lifts from City On Fire are obvious).
So what if Bollywood films take plots and scenes from other films? Some Bollywood films do break the mould a bit and try something different from the usual songs and cheese outings.
You seem to have a bee in your bonnet about something (either that or you are simply trolling)? Have you been forced to sit watching Bollywood films against your will? Each to their own, I say. Bollywoods are no worse than garbage like Epic Movie, which people flocked to see and came out saying how "wikkid" it was.
plekhanov 15-04-2007, 01:25 So Lestat would I be way off in guessing that there are some people in your family who come from Pakistan or another country with poor relations with India?
carcrash 15-04-2007, 07:16 I don't tend to watch bollywood films but I'm a big fan of Chinese, Japanese, and other south asian films. The quality varies quite dramatically but the good stuff is very much the equal of anything that the west has done. Scorsese won an Oscar this year for a scene by scene remake of a film called Internal Affairs that came out about 5 years ago. Internal Affairs is a classic and it didn't need to be remade or sanitised for the American market. Tarantino has lifted entire films and tried to say that he is paying homage to films he saw years ago but it is starting to look like straight forward theft added to that the fact that a lot of the major films that have come out of asia recently have been repackaged, edited, re-soundtracked, censored and basically bastardised by Tarantino's production company (Tom Yum Goong/Warrior King for instance).
So Lestat would I be way off in guessing that there are some people in your family who come from Pakistan or another country with poor relations with India?
I'd wondered the same thing - a touch of Hindu loathing perhaps?
Bollywood films versus Rocky films? And the OP wants us to believe Bollywood is rubbish?
MuteWitness 15-04-2007, 09:51 bollywood isnt all "dancing" films. Some are fantastic.

I agree entirely. Did you see Sarkar or Don last year? Both really good, strong films (one an adaptation of Godfather, and one a fun packed action film which kicked ass!)

Sorry, but totally disagree - Bollywood is a load of crap. Even the name has been copied from Hollywood!!
You say that even Tarantino lifted scenes from other movies...can we have some evidence please, but even if he has - they are scenes NOT whole films!
Also, if you're telling me that indian actors are better than the Hollywood actors than thats just plain crazy!. The films you think are garbage like Epic movie etc..are meant to be silly & cheesy....Bollywood movies that are meant to be serious are just silly and cheesy!
Theres a huge difference in quality that will not be matched for years... I just wish the indian film industry would stick to making it's own movies and stop copying, they'd get alot more respect.

What a stupid thing to say. Both you and Halibut should know better, I'm talking about their film industry producing garbage, not the country or people. Stop trolling. :loopy: :loopy:

Your experience of Bollywood (which, by the way, it was a 70s film maker who first coined the phrase in a column he wrote and it stuck - many of the people within the industry hate the word) can only have come from a few 'typical' releases. It's certainly a shame that you tar all the films with the same brush, but it is pointless to try to convince you otherwise. Many of the Bolly releases we get over here are from the "meant to be cheesy and fun" category - hence they are such.
As for Tarantino....a quote from an interview with Empire magazine.... ""I steal from every single movie ever made. If people don't like that, then tough, don't go and see it, all right? I steal from everything. Great artists steal, they don't do homages."
Dogs was, by Tarantino's admissions, a rip of Ringo Lam's City on Fire (a great film). Kill Bill = Lady Snowblood. It doesn't mean that Dogs was a lesser film because of it, or indeed that Kill Bill was tainted by being a copy of another film.
Another poster has already mentioned the constant re-hashes of foreign films that the US film industry churns out.
The Indian film industry does make a lot of quality film - most of which do not see a western release as, simply put, they do not sell as well. There are some solid actors and directors in amongst the industry, much as there are fantastic actors and diabolical actors and directors in other countries.

Sorry Lestat, no troll intended, but it seemed a little at odds with your usually fairly open eyed world view to trash a whole genre........

I accepted their place in the movieworld Halibut, but the thing that got to me was when I saw one copy too many of a western film. They had even put in a re-vamped indian version of a Pet Shop Boys in there!!..LOL! :hihi: :loopy:
Then I started spotting other western tunes being massacred by them and thought I needed to speak out about it!
Respect where it's due, but from 99% of what I've seen they've copied every last detail in some extremely tacky ways. Thats why I cant understand why peeps get carried away with Bollywood... it's tack on a stick.
Halibut, Plekhanov....those comments are out of order and un-necessary.
You might as well say that you're racist if you don't like Gangster Rap. They're silly comments and not worthy of either of you.
upinwath 15-04-2007, 15:01 I've seen a couple but I can't say as I them but others do so what the hell.
JFKvsNixon 15-04-2007, 15:02 The Americans are also well known for copying basically every successful non american movie there is from the Departed to the Wickerman with cheesy actors and actresses, over the top special effects. They are even going to remake Dambusters!
upinwath 15-04-2007, 15:09 They are even going to remake Dambusters!
I'll bet guy gibson is a yank but what the hell are they going to call his dog ?
Beakerzoid 15-04-2007, 16:10 They are even going to remake Dambusters!
Although it is Peter Jackson who is developing it, and he's not American...but still....yeah. No originality these days.
And I have no idea what the dog will be called. Jackson has commented that it would be inapproproate to use the original name now.
cgksheff 15-04-2007, 16:47 2002 figures:
Hollywood: 739 films produced 2.6 billion tickets sold
Bollywood: 1013 films produced 3.6 billion tickets sold
plekhanov 15-04-2007, 17:33 Although it is Peter Jackson who is developing it, and he's not American...but still....yeah. No originality these days.
He works in the Hollywood system though regardless of his country of origin.

The way Lestat makes his statements about "the Indians" it certainly reads as a prejudiced generalisation. Lestat has attacked India and Indians in the past, while elsewhere objecting (rightly) to people slagging off "the muslims" or "the Asians".
