View Full Version : One of my guinea pigs has died
found 1 of my 2 guine pigs dead today now i dont no what to do with the alive guinea pig....we have 2 other guinea pigs but last time i introduced all 4 of them together they fought.:(
the guinea pig that is on its own is quite a lot smaller then the other 2 so i dont know weather to introduce them again...if so am i best to do this on unfamiliar ground for them all ie the run??
i cant have her living on her own as i dont believe guinea pigs thrive well on there own:help: :help:
baileys_mum 14-04-2007, 18:20 Hiya,
Piggies are very social animals, so if you CAN get them together please do. Best thing to do is if you KNOW they will fight, bath them in the same thing, thoughrily clean out the hutch/cage so no smell of anyone is in there. Also put vicks on the noses only a tad mind so they all smell the same.
Neutral ground is a good thing too, so is lots of distractions like food and lots of hidey places.
If you find they are squablling over houses, remove them.
Unless blood is drawn don't seporate them, they'll need to establish a heirachy :)
Any more questions please feel free to pm me
baileys_mum 14-04-2007, 18:25 God, how insensitive of me, sorry to hear about your piggy, was he/she old?
she was about 4 years old i rescued her from a pet shop she was an alpaca breed apparently and i got her as her fur was in a bad way...she was always a sickly looking guinea pig her hair never grew back proply and im sure her growth had been stunted as even at adult age she was small.
must have just been her time...i feel awful though as ive been out all day and only just found her dead this afternoon:(
i will try them together but i dont hold out much hope as i tried all the above ideas you mentioned and the 2 other piggies didnt accept the smaller piggies.:(
huggybabe 14-04-2007, 20:07 im sorry about your piggy :(
as long as the one on its own is smaller then the others thet should be ok
as long as the little one doesnt try to be main piggy boss they should be ok
id use vicks a tiny amout as baileys mom says worked with my piggys,

baileys_mum 16-04-2007, 09:02 Oh thats fab to hear Jody. Whats wrong with your piggy Huggybabe?
huggybabe 16-04-2007, 11:08 its my youngest piggy missy,
she has a poorly leg was off her food a bit yesterday,
just layed down, she looked very pathetic :(
but this morning shes more like her old self, begging for her veg being nosey
she even tryed to have a little run around this morning, i kept her on her own al day an night to rest , shes had food and alot brighter she still bunny hopping a little on her back legs but walking on it, yesterday she couldnt walk
baileys_mum 16-04-2007, 15:28 Hmm, have you had her to the vets?
huggybabe 16-04-2007, 15:39 no shes picked up loads today, shes walking around being nosey, even had a litle run around this morning shes eating again as normal, just gonna keep my eyes on her for the rest of today, i think she jumped out her cage a bit funny an banged her leg,i have a plastic cage the lid comes of and my 2 piggys jump i and out when they want, only in there at bed time.........they have a huge room to play in all day...........
i got told about OD in satins yesterday so that scared me stupid..........if anyone has satin pigs the should read up on this i will find a link to it.............
someone also said about vit c being needed but im not sure its that as they have loads of veg twice a day plus dry food with added vit c........... if it was that wouldnt both my piggys be ill????

baileys_mum 16-04-2007, 16:37 Vit C is added to the dry food by most makers, and is also found in thefresh veg so I wouldn't worry about that.
OD in satins has only been a recent worry, but I'm sure only affects a small ammount of piggies. If you want better info than that site please pm me and I will put you in touch with someone that knows quite a lot on the subject
