Hello,

My cat had 5 kittens on wednesday and today they've all been killed. Does anyone know how long it will take her to get over this or if there's anything I can do to help her. She's still calling for them, but when she does I show her lots of love and attention. I know she'll not be grieving for as long as I will, but I want her to be ok asap. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

:( :(

I made the mistake of leaving the door at the bottom of the stairs open when I went out for half an hour, anyway my dog got up and decided that they were toys. I feel awful

I'm so sorry to hear about this- you must feel so bad for her when she gets distressed.

It won't take her long to get over it- and you're doing exactly the right thing by lots of love when she's calling for them. Did you allow her to see their bodies? I know it's gruesome, but it does seem to help them understand that they've gone.

There's one really (and I mean REALLY) important thing at this stage. She'll have a season within a few days if she's lost them. You mustn't let her out at all, not even for a wee, until she's spayed, because her body won't be helped out at all by back to back pregnancies. She'll probably also need worming and treating for fleas, cos you can't treat them for either whilst she's expecting, so she'll be overdue for both.

I think that it's just love and hugs, followed by some love and hugs that will make her well. It won't make things any easier for her to have another litter, and unless she's pedigree or you have a waiting list for kittens, I'd advise not to let her become pregnant again anyway.

Don't be at all surprised if she starts to 'mother' soft toys or other small things in the next week or two- let her have them and one day she'll just not wash them in the same way.

I've moved this to the pets group BTW- but the answer from most people with a cat post is to ask medusa, so I thought I'd better answer you too.

Hello,

She showed me the kittens so she did see them dead.

She's a little bit better today and she seems to have stopped calling for them. She wont leave my side though, but I'm glad she's not the opposite. Thanksfor all of you're concern and help.

I wouldn't have her put down, that was just put in out of interest.

That's such a sad event. :(

Don't have your dog put down... I feel this will make you even more upset and presumably the cat and the dog usually mix together and it will be a further change to her life.
I haven't voted on the poll as, if I'm being honest, I find that a bit crass - do you really want strangers to make your mind up for you, like she's being evicted from Big Brother? Not deliberately having a go at you, just expressing my uncomfortableness with this being put to a poll.

There seems to be one option missing off the poll. Take better care of your domestic animals?

a) why was you cat even having kittens ... as medusa will tell you there's too many cats and kittens about as it is.

b) you should have been more aware of what was going on, especially as on another thread, you're telling us that you leave a big, intelligent, powerful dog cooped up all day on its own and that you knew it was bored out of its skull. Something was bound to happen sometime.

I'm not normally judgmental about people and their actions vis a vis animals, but this case sounds like blithe neglect, really.

It's only to find out people's opinions. I am actually rehoming her see thread http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=205688. I have tried to take the poll off, but I'm not sure how to.

My cat's a bit better she's been playing in the garden.

Dont you think that I already feel bad enough!!!!!!!

I hate people that just put on posts to have a go at people. I'm sure that I'm not the only person in the world that has to work and has got a dog

If you want to take the poll off I am sure the helpdesk will aid you in this.

I hope you find someone to rehome your dog for you as it sounds like this would be best for you all. A German Shepherd is a lovely dog but needs lots of time and long walks.

Glad to hear your cat is behaving a bit happier today - beware what Medusa said re getting pregnant again.

Perhaps this isn't the best time to point this out?

Anyway - poll closed at OP request.

Yeah I'm gunna phone the vets about getting her spayed. She had the first lot because she got pregnant a week before she was booked in to get spayed and I didn't want the kittens to be killed. Very ironic I know
