Cheers :)

Try and keep a list of contents for each box or at least mark on outside of box general contents.

Clearly mark the box with your bedding in - believe me you will glad of it.

If you are boxing up heavy items such as books only use small boxes or you never lift them.

Pack essential things like the kettle, teabags, milk, sugar (even if you don't take sugar - your removal men might do - someone packed this in another box when I moved it didn't go down well I can tell you) and coffee last and make sure this box is marked open first.

Try not to let the stress of it all get to you - take a deep breath and relax you will get there.

Oh and finally - don't let someone pack your handbag - that happened to me.

Pack a bag as though you're going away for the weekend. It's likely you won't be able to find essentials for a day or two, otherwise

Well, what we did was mark up each box with the room it was going to go in.

Check out http://www.iammoving.com for help in letting lots of companies know you are moving. The service is free to you as the companies pay for receiving the info they want in a format they can just feed into their database - can save you hours on the phone! For the companies that they have on their list that won't accept electronic notification, their website will format you up a letter to print off and send them. Saved me and the missus a quite a bit of hassle.
Other tips:
Don't pack all your cutlery - when you're sat there on your first night with fish & chips on your knees you'll be glad of a fork.
Be sure to note down meter readings as soon as you move in.
Check the heating/hot water settings - you won't want to wake up freezing in the middle of the night and have to work it all out (and cold morning showers make me wince)
Get as many mates as you can to help (the promise of a couple of crates of beer swelled the numbers of our volunteer moving army I can tell you!)
Stay calm - you WILL lose something, something WILL get broken, you WILL be tired and your blokey WILL do something wrong - go easy on him!

Enjoy it!

Best boxes for book are the lettuce/banana ones they give away in Morrisons. They hold a limited amount, reducing the weight, but are stackable.

21 different addresses since I was 18 so most of this is sort of a given but even I was finding useful nuggets in this thread so yes... a hearty thanks for the contributions...

We're moving to our first house (bought) in a month so it's all rather exciting :D

Wrap up all your breakables in newspaper.

Also - throw away or give away all the things you have that you haven't used in a year. You never find out quite how much crap you have until you have to move it all! Use it as a unique opportunity to scale down your stuff!

I nearly lost my marbles the last time we moved :hihi:

Sat outside the house we now legally owned for three hours while the removal men loaded up the ex owners stuff.

Cost us about £150 to have the removal men sat in the van waiting :(

Quite a common occurrence with removals apparently.

Lots of good advice above.

Before the removal men come, check behind all the furniture in your bedroom. Something embarrassing was found behind the bedroom chest of drawers in one house move of mine...

If you're moving out of a rented house, or somewhere where you have bills etc sent to either leave your new address with the people that are movig into your old house, or register with the post office to have your mail sent on.

There is a charge for this, but could be worth it. If not just ask the people moving into your house to re-dorect post for you

Theres always a couple of companies that you forget to send your new address to in time.

The same happened to me. I was sat in the estate agent, house legally mine, being fobbed (SP) off by the agent. After about an hour I went to my house to find them still loading their van, stuff not even packed properly. I ended up helping them load thair van just so I could get in the house. Eventually got in with no thanks or apology. Cost me a small fortune. Thanks.

I realise moving is a stressful time, but please, at least be packed on moving day.
