View Full Version : Why Do Motorcyclists Do This?
About, ooh, 10 years ago, i remember a motorbiker was riding in front of me and he began to weave his bike from side to side in the lane. This puzzled me, so when i got to work i asked some of lads why they do this. I remember one guy telling me that it was gay members of the motorcycling community who were 'coming on' to you. Like shaking their ass at you. The guy who told me this was a bit of a wind up merchant, so i thought he was just making it up.
So, 10 years later, here i am working at a different place. On tuesday on my way to work i see a motorbike in front of me doing the same thing- weaving side to side in front of me. I hadn't seen a biker do this for years. I got to work and asked one of the lads, who happens to be a biker, 'Why they do this?' And he told me the same thing - that it was gay bikers coming on to you!
Can any forummers who are bikers confirm or deny this? And, if its true, are they any ways to signal back " I'm flattered, maybe even a little curious, but the answer is NO" ?
It's never something that I've come across as a reason for weaving. Most of the bikers that I've been around would use space between overtaking people to weave to get the edges of the tyres warmed up in case you have to get your knee down going round corners.
You see, when you're going in a straight line, the only bit of your tyres in contact with the road (and therefore the only part that's at proper running speed) is the strip in the middle. If you need to go round corners, you'll be using the edges of your tyres too- and if the edges are cold then they won't grip as well as the middle strip, and you risk coming off or losing control.
Picture what the riders do on a warm up lap before a bike race. Lots of weaving from side to side to make sure that lots of the tyres get warm properly.

.
Oh- and another possible reason. Wiggling can help against numb bum, if you've been riding for a while.
Till Man 13-04-2007, 20:27 Around the Sheffield area I used to have to weave the bike to avoid the potholes!!
Not so much weaving, more slalom (is that spelt right?)
With me, its usually to avoid potholes, manhole covers, painted road markings, and all the other stuff on the road that offers less grip than tarmac

Several reason. The most commonly used being warming up the tyres, or at least the sides of the tyres, and also helping to keep the wear even.
More likely they are just bored and messing about, that's my personal opinion.

That could be it as my x who's a biker did this a lot all because of a numb bum and get the feeling back into his legs, i just thought he was trying to show off. And to avoid pot holes and other stuff on the road. Also i know a few bikers do this to warm the tyres up and loosen up befor they get to a good bit of road they know to rev off and go as fast as they can. Other then that i dont know any other reason why a biker may do this.
whitewitch 13-04-2007, 21:50 i thought it was to warm their tyres up so they stick to the tarmac better
MuteWitness 13-04-2007, 21:51 Avoid pot holes
