View Full Version : SUFC, are they trying to wind me up?
Robbie Loving 05-11-2004, 14:28 just seen this on website
It's student day at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Students from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University can get a Gillingham match ticket (Gordon Lamb stand) plus a pint and a pie for just £5.
"We are offering students a special match day package which will also include a booklet of McDonalds vouchers," said Box Office Manager Emma Wylie.
In addition, on production of the ticket stub, double the student discount can be obtained at Streetwise Sports throughout November.
The special tickets, which can be bought at the turnstiles tomorrow or through the universities, are available to students who hold student union membership cards.
For more information contact the Blades Box Office on 0870 787 1799.
absolutely unbelievable!!

£18 Kop
£21 Family enc/corner
£22 South
Kop, i was just rounding it off to £20!
Well if this bunch of 'immigrants' to the city can be persuaded through the gates once they may return once converted, and make a avluable contribution to the finances of the club. Gillingham? Big match? If you're miffed, pick a part time course at Sheff College and enjoy the benefits of NUS membership!!!

yeah but how many will actually get to return??
none reeally,
also if they was that bothered it would have been promotoed a long time ago!!
they have seen ticket sales are now down for gills game, and they have decided to do something with students due to the fact they could not change ticket prices of normal peoples with out causing a fuss!!
students generally will only turn up when offers are on like this (unless you already live in sheffield)
********- have already bought my full price ticket- gggrrrr.
I always thought that they did a promo at the start of every uni year! ( Maybe I am mistaken but I'm sure I remember them doing offers when I was at uni a few years ago!)
Students are not all that bad anyway (occassionally!) When I was one, I worked behind the bar and also did voluntary work for over a year with the 'playing for success' which is held at SUFC and helps local secondary kids out by gaining extra skills.....maybe students can be useful!
How many empty seats would there have been for a normal game against Gillingham? Perhpas they're just being astute and selling them at that price to people who otherwise wouldn't have gone.
Perhaps over the next few month they'll extend the same offer to asylum seekers, on-strike civil servants, chavs (no, perhaps not, they pay full price already) or SWFC supporters.:D

Not true, I am a member of the Sheffield college. To be a student membership holder you need to be a full time university student and you have to prove it and join up as one.
I am in the Kop membership scheme and I am getting tickets for £16 tomorrow and i'm buying two full price tickets. What happened to keeping your regulars happy? A free pint would go down very well tomorrow.
lets be honest (and I have a student card) it is stupid to let students in cheap and never benefit your true fans. I am not prepared to pay "£22 to watch a pile of garbage. Please note. I always seem to go to Gillingham games (apart from the good ones) abd if I don't go it will obviously be good.
so I'm really doing you a favour by not going.
£20-28 to watch 90 mins of rubbish against a poor team is such a rip off.
gone are the days when you'd save significant money buying a season ticket. In any case I'm not going whilst Warnock is still manager.

Snakey_B 06-11-2004, 18:32 why should students get this deal when they'll come about twice a year then never again when they finnish uni and go back to where theyre originaly from.
Now im all for getting the next generation of fans in , offer quid a kid to under 18s (why does consession tickets apply to under 16's ? under 18 surly would make more sence)? This is more likly to get younger sheffielders here more often and there fore gaining there support/
I left school at 16 , got myself a joinery apprentiship earnt 80 a week yet i still had to pay god knows for a season ticket which i couldnt afford in one go so had to pay my dad weekly for it ,now to me that isnt fair. Ive had 4 years of paying full price where as my student friends pay cheaper prices just cos theyre at uni and skint (althought they go on the **** 3 times a week and buy daft clothes ,cds ans dvds....) to me its just wrong and annoys me alot

Yep was rubbish. But will you be there next weekend against Watford when its £10 in all parts of the ground?

Typical Blades and their way of working.
Well thanks to the blades for getting in ALL those students, I couldn't count how many were there as all the empty seats were distracting me. I paid £68 for two adults and two members tickets, why? I do it every game nearly.
me and a mate went to that game. Was a fiver but we wernt excatly given good seats. Its a shame that game was boring (the second half atleast) with some shocking attempts at goal. Will def go again though as theres nothing like a live footie game.
Sheff united have done this for years.
At the end of the day there's empty seats. Even charging a fiver with a free pint and pie still makes the club a profit. Plus people will buy more pints, a programme, more food etc
And maybe...just maybe come back. Even if they don't sheff U have made some money they wouldn’t normally have made.
This doesn’t happen at my home club, Newcastle…but we fill our ground ;)
…go on then….lay into me :)
Yodameister 08-11-2004, 13:04 I'm sure they are not doing it with the intention of "winding people up". It is a commercial decision.
The ground is not filling up. Rather than reduce the prices they think it is a good idea to get new punters in.
They assume that reducing general prices would not get more people in, because if you are a comitted fan you are going to go anyway.
I don't know if they are right or not, but that is the thinking.

these are students we are on about,
they wont buy a programme
they wont buy more food
the reasons being for this, you dont get that much time at a united game to buy food and beer etc,
students will just not buy a programme
so for this fiver, they get a pie ticket and beer
lets say the beer and pie cost £1 for both of them
then we have to employ extra staff, as i believe this was done only on the gordon lamb stand, an area which we dont normally use
so we need turnstile operators, extra stewards and extra cateering staff
say there was 100 students turn up
after costs for the pie and beer thats £400
then say we employ an extra hmmmmm 15 staff
say they earn on average £20 for the game
thats £300
so a profit of £100, taxed £75,
then cost of stand to be cleared afterrwards
extra electricity
i really do not see it being worth while!!
Yodameister 08-11-2004, 13:29 So......
Write to them, get involved with supporters clubs, make your voice heard.
Yeah it does sound like they are being a bit short sighted, but its no good telling us!
Im sure *some* of them will buy extra pint(s) and a programme
The pies will cos the club about 10p each robbie...HUGE profit.
I rememeber when I was at uni...the same deal was £3! :)

As inept as our board are, this won't have been run at a loss. Personally, Gillingham won't have been bringing many fans, so why don't we let some students in? I've got a season ticket, but I'm not whinging about the £10 a ticket deals they do for 4 games a year.
You should remember as well…loads of students are footy fans. Sheffield has more students stay on in the city after they finish uni than anywhere else in the country.
Now if they're keen footy fans and you can get them to like your team, even if after they finish uni they only take in a few games a season, it's still money for the club. Then they have kids, who in turn are likely to go to the match with their dad and grow up as blades fans.
It's worthwhile in my opinion.

i know it wouldnt have come at a loss!!
by all means, get extra people in at a reduced cost, but you have to remember, students already get low priced tickets already!!
why dont they dish out some free tickets to schools
thats where the potential market is!!
or give them to some needy causes who could raffle them off to people, winners all round then!!
you dont whinge about the £10 tickets, cause that is already in built in to the price of your season ticket, as are category B games

True, i dident see anybody buying a program but you should have seen the ques for both the bar and for food, we were just glad that we had got up a few mins earlier at half time for a beer and some scran (which wernt free, its before the game that you get a free pint and a pie).
I think it's fine that the students get tickets for a fiver, as long as they have to wear t-shirts that say "I am a student" on the back, then the BBC will have legitimate targets.
They were given the top tier of the Bramall Lane End. Oh how I wish I had a sniper - they were ripe for picking off!
