View Full Version : Harry Enfield is back
Zinger549 13-04-2007, 15:01 Two of the biggest comedy names in Britain, Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse, reunite after eight years for a sketch series with a gallery of completely new characters.

Sounds great.
alchresearch 13-04-2007, 17:41 Hope it's better than his "brand spanking new show" which was a Sky exclusive and was just awful.
EdnaKrabappe 13-04-2007, 17:52 Cool thanks for the reminder. shall make sure I'm in front of tv for then!
purdyamos 13-04-2007, 18:04 I'm looking forward to this. But they look so old! And if they look old, I must look old. That's not very funny. :(
EdnaKrabappe 13-04-2007, 21:07 Mm think characters need to grow on you.
Think the Jamie and Oliver schoolkids and the educated builders will end up being the best characters. Shame they've not brought back any old favourites - Kevin the student is one I was looking forward to.
PuressenceUK 13-04-2007, 21:53 All in all very poor. The only characters I really liked was the guy in the Notting Hill 'tat' shop and the Jose Mourinho mickey take.
alchresearch 13-04-2007, 22:07 What a pile of crap. There were a couple of mildly amusing moments but I found the Nelson Mandella sketches unfunny and the Laurel and Hardy Brokeback Mountain was just plain offensive and tasteless.
what a load of rubbish! what a disappointment :(
aelfheah 15-04-2007, 00:15 So I didn't miss anything then?:hihi:
Seriously, Harry should have carried on another series with some of the great characters he created, but prematurely killed off as always(The Superheroes of Doom and Cholmondley-Warner:thumbsup: )
TonyTheYid 15-04-2007, 21:22 Harry Enfield & Chums 1997 is out on DVD on May 21st
discoelectro 15-04-2007, 21:27 Terrible :| I just found myself saying: "this isn't funny is it?" after every sketch.
BasilRathbon 16-04-2007, 09:30 Why is it that actors and musicians are allowed to grow old but comedy performers aren't?
alchresearch 16-04-2007, 11:25 Apparently the BBC received over 100 complaints, most about the Laurel and Hardy sketch.
Terrible :| I just found myself saying: "this isn't funny is it?" after every sketch.
I'm relieved to read posts like this - I did wonder if I'd just lost my sense of humour...
Ah, but Harry did acquit himself marvellously as Tony's sewer-mouthed dad in Skins.
Zinger549 21-04-2007, 09:39 What did people think about last nights episode. I thought the old American man and women in the shop was really funny.
was really looking forward to this..but it was pretty bad.. the americans made me giggle 'what a guy' but it just makes me forget how damn good the show used to be
Yodameister 21-04-2007, 16:42 I thought some of the were pretty funny. I've met people like the South African guy in the gym. Its well observed but miles over the top and that's what Harry Enfield has always done well.
I think people tend to forget that all sketch shows are generally a bit hit and miss and years later you only remember the good bits.
Corr_Blimey 22-04-2007, 00:20 How funny is the South African guy on the new Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse show! Check it out if you've not seen it as it's hilarious.
I have a mate who comes from that neck of the woods and it's him to a tee!

purdyamos 22-04-2007, 01:49 I'm being generous and giving it time to bed in. Hardly any comedy shows are all that from Episode one - especially sketch shows, as you need to get to know the characters, get into the variation and repitition of the underlying jokes etc. In the second programme, for instance, the Polish cafe workers are obviously going to become more subtle and understated as time goes on. The first sketch had to telegraph the scenario and dynamics. As time goes on they and the other characters will have to explain less and the running jokes should build.
Miss Metal 22-04-2007, 17:38 Have to say the U2 mickey take is awesome :D
the white rose 15-05-2007, 10:50 Ah, but Harry did acquit himself marvellously as Tony's sewer-mouthed dad in Skins.
 hello at joyphil :)
yare i liked him in that role, too! i wrote a blog article about ruddy hell (http://judecalverttoulmin.blogspot.com/2007/04/ruddy-hell-its-harry-and-paul.html) and it's still getting loads of googles so it must be popular even though it's (predictably) getting slagged off. i think ruddy hell is brilliant. my favourite character is "i'm an important man" because i've met SO many of these in real life. :gag:
DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR SHEFFIELD MONOPOLY! (http://www.monopoly.co.uk/vote.aspx)
NEKRO138 15-05-2007, 12:05 Never been a huge fan of Enfield, but I actually like this new show.
Just finished watching the last show, I must admit I love Madonna and Guy Ritchie sketch, I also like Saw You Coming, Coffee shop and the Americans.I hate Bill gates sketch and Wouldnt Back Down.
I think it deserves another series but get rid of some of the characters.
I also like Nelson Mandella and the South African.
