View Full Version : Photography of pets
Just to gauge interest...
I enjoy a bit of photography as a hobby (not pro) and looking for more subjects.
I was wondering if any of you pet owners would want a visit (te get pics of pets! :hihi:):-
- I get the practise I want
- you (may) get a couple of nice pics out of it
Perhaps some sort of buy the prints you like sort of idea? I'm not trying to launch a career here, so a guess couple of quid for a reasonable size print?
Maybe a price for a CD containing all the pics so you could pick the ones you want to print yourself?
Home visits?
Events/show visits?
Bit of a ramble this, as I said I just wanted to gauge interest if it would be worth me persuing a bit.
Please do let me know all honest thoughts.
eg.
would folks want home visits?
would the idea of paying a bit (talking of a few quid for beer rather than trying to make a living) put people off?
Feel free to pm, or visit my homepage to find out a bit more about me.
If of concern to you, I have been recently (within the last 12 months) CRB checked and happy to provide a copy if that would provide reassurance!
TattyBear 13-04-2007, 12:15 Alot of people who have digital cameras will probably take lots of pics of their pets anyway, however, I would be interested in a portrait type picture. :)
That's what I thinking about the digicam bit - but that's no differant really to owning a 35mm camera.
It was/is? the more pro looking shots I was thinking of, rather than snaps. If that makes sense?
Assuming I could get some half decent portrait type pics(!) would you be prepared to pay a small amount for them? Want printed pics? CD of a few pics (would prob charge a little more)?
One problem I can see straight off is a lot of folks can be upset by the idea I use the pics elsewhere (as I would own the copyright officially - but dont want to get into that!).
Would folks be bothered if pics (of animals not people/houses etc) were to appear on web for example?
What about animal shelters etc?
Anyone know of any that might want some publicity pics doing? eg. for their websites, or even help with building websites ;). But as I work with computers for a living playing with them in my own time is not always top of list of things to do!
KATIEB_23 13-04-2007, 12:33 You're right Tatty - Ive just checked & I've got 459 didgital pics of Gadget!! We've only had him a year and a half!!
Having said that, most of them aren't very good, and we only have one photo of Me, Gadget & OH together.
I will check with OH as I think we would like some nice pics of all 3 of us :)
KATIEB_23 13-04-2007, 12:37 Sorry I took a while to finish that post as I was distracted... missed all your replies dafoot.
Have you got any examples of pics you've taken?
Personally if it was for me, I wouldn't mind pics of Gadget being used anywhere, but would be a bit more worried about pics of me or OH.
I would be more interested in a CD so I could choose how to print/use the photos at a later date.
I would be happy to pay for the CD... dunno how much though?
I suppose the best way for you to charge would be an hourly rate plus materials?
Pretty positive so far....
I think there are a few pics on my website. I'll have to update it tonight, perhaps put up a couple of sisters wedding or sommat.
tbh it's something I would love to have done. I don't have any decent photos of me and rhia, or even rhia for that matter. She always walks towards the me and the camera whenever I try and take photos. I wouldn't really be bothered about the copyright :D I'd just want some nice pics of my horse. PM me if you are interested, however I will warn you, horses are a pain in the a*** to photograph :hihi: Would also like to wait a couple of weeks til she finished malting, she looks a right mess at the moment!
Yes I would be prepared to pay a reasonable amount.
KATIEB_23 13-04-2007, 12:59 Found em
More samples for you...some oldies, some more recent.
These are a few I use on screensaver at work so shouldn't be anything 'naughty' ;)
Be warned, if not on a decent connnection they make take a while to load.

TattyBear 13-04-2007, 13:24 So for a portrait how much would you be talking? I was looking at your photos of meg, the close ups, very good! :)
So for a portrait how much would you be talking? I was looking at your photos of meg, the close ups, very good! :)
Thanks :)
Always nice to hear people like my pics.
As for prices...I'll have a think tonight. Reckon per pic / CD full be best as I wouldn't want to price per hour if I then don't get any someone likes.
Can't charge if you don't get anything out of it :hihi:
This was more to judge interest, dare say there is some.
So I'll sort some prices tonight.
TattyBear 13-04-2007, 13:49 Ok, let us know :)
purdyamos 13-04-2007, 13:49 Photographing animals is like doing babies, it takes patience and practice and lots of goes to get just the right moment. I probably speak for most that when I'm taking pics of mine, I'm so busy focussing on getting them to look, stay, etc that I forget about the quality of the pic as a well crafted shot. If you got the experience and the knack to create 'wow' portraits and capture the moment, so to speak, or encapsulate the animal's character, I think people would definitely pay out for that.
Unfortunately my blobs are terribly shy of strangers - especially men, so I can't take up your offer. But good luck with it. Do we get to see some of the results here? :)
...Do we get to see some of the results here? :)
Of course!
Unless I'm not happy with pics :suspect: or the people involved would prefer I didn't.
I would be very very very interested in having lots more 'professional' piccies of Lilly taken. We had some done at Pets At Home a month or so ago but they charged £35 for 3 prints, and it was quite a stressful environment for her to have them done in. Even though they look posed they weren't at all as she was freaking out too much.
I would be much more interested in having a CD of the pictures as then you can pick and choose over what you do with them - whether you print them out or keep em on the PC.
As for copyright and using them elsewhere - it wouldn't bother me although if quite a bit of my property or me was in the piccy I would like to have the option to quickly check them over first :)
hi
I've been in touch about this before anyway but...
You might want to consider providing backdrops for people to stand the dog against if you don't have a studio.
I'd love some good pics of my two (particularly Takara as I show her and want to breed from her so would love a professional pic for a website) however nowhere in my house is particularly suitable.
I think it's a great idea but make sure you write out some sort of documentation for people to sign in case you want to use some of the better photos for a portfolio - sharing these pics elsewhere without owners consent (or with the consent but no written proof) could get you into trouble.
I would be very interested if you could quote up the price for a cd of photos :)
Thanks all for the input & ideas.
On the copyright side of things, it always belongs to photographer. But you're right Lotti, getting a signature would help reinforce that in the mind of pundits. :)
I guess it would also make it clear that I have the right to use elsewhere, though I can listen to objections.
Couple of comments about wanting 'pro' pics, while I will endevour to get good pics, I am no pro....just thought it fair to make that clear. I don't do this for a living :)
Prices...I guess that's what everyone wants to know about.
erm..
Problem here is allowing previews of pics - no one wants to pay out before they know there are some of worth.
So 2 options as I see it:
1. I can build a website for people to view preview pics to choose from. I can custom build this so can add privacy protection if someone needs it.
2. Take a computer with me to place taking pics. Would allow instant feedback on pics, but these would be before any tidying, cropping, colour adjustment etc. So pics may not look at best, but buyer get instant visualisation.
Soooo....
Does this seem reasonable, given you would be able to view the pics before deciding on parting with cash....?
£8 / pic
£25 gets full session on CD.
(if you're not a fan of digital, we can work something out for prints)
Will post to you on CD/DVD.
Call a session 30-45 minutes(ish!). This is a guide, but feel the need to clarify to avoid anyone taking the micky. I'm not going to spend 5 hours with an animal for £25 ;)
Fees include time spent at home by me with pics, adjusting etc.
Only ask for money if you find pics you like. Not directly for time.
Pics in jpeg format, giving you rights to use/reproduce as prints or on personal websites. But not to sell the pics.
That should cover my costs and give me beer money.
Does this sound reasonable or too much?
Reckon it was about what I charging for computer repairs/IT support while I did similar thing as a student.
Cor, that was a long post! :/
Photographing animals is like doing babies...
Absolutly. I've been practising on my 2 nieces (3 + 6months) but figure people would (understandably) tend to be a bit less likely to go for this as an idea doing kiddy pics.
Though if anyone want me to do a similar thing with their kids let me know (for obvious reasons I will refrain from publishing pics on web etc of kids if asked to do so).
I would be interested in a portrait type picture. :)
Me too, one of me, hubby, the cats and our little doggie. Thats if the cats would. If not just me hubby and the doggie.
Anyone that defo wants me to visit based on the prices I mentioned earlier - could you pm me please?
With email addy or messenger to arrange meeting (otherwise my pm inbox will fill up again :( )
The only problem I can see with publishing the pics on a website would be people can save them from there rather than pay you for them (great for us! Not so good for you...) unless you're going to slap a ruddy great 'sample' tag across it.
Good luck with it all! :)
TattyBear 13-04-2007, 20:16 So will you be providing a background? My house isnt suitable! lol. Not for a very nice portrait anyway! Mind you I suppose if people wanted and they knew a nice quiet park or something then perhaps that would work? I know for instance if I took my dogs to the park as long as it was quiet they would sit for abit (hopefully!) Is that something you would consider if you dont have a background? :)
Indeed Lotti...ways and means ;)
The background thing....fair point. Personally I would much prefer to do park shots - I'm not really such a big fan of static poses.
Get the dog happy running around with ball for example. Tend to look more natural.
I do not have any of the background curtain setups, but if the demand was there it's a good reason to get one - it may pay for itself in the end.
dafoot - personally, I'd be interested in both but I'd really like a good standing photograph of Takara.
In order to get her to stand I need to be stood with her so can't get a photo from where I am and if I try getting her to stand indepedently while I take a photo I get something like this where her head looks disproportionate to her body!
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b10/Lottiepics/DSCF1310.jpg (excuse the mess)
So a good standing shot for my website (and to send to her breeder) wouldn't go amiss ;)
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b10/Lottiepics/DSCF1310.jpg
Looking proud there!
For this sort of thing (showing) we'll have to think carefully about background...
She's confused! I'm supposed to be in front of her or next to her, not telling her to look at the lovely bone that I've carefully placed on the sofa but she's not allowed to eat and kneeling down taking photos of her!!

i would love a professional photo of my lot
Your pictures are stunning
and once you've got into backgrounds, there's the issue of colour to set different coats off ;)
Will you be able to do edits of pics and perhaps add different backgrounds in or remove unwanted items?
I was interested until you became so firm about the use of images elsewhere :(

Thankyou.

Wimmin! :hihi:
Will you be able to do edits of pics and perhaps add different backgrounds in or remove unwanted items?
That would involve purchase of expensive (400-500) software. So not yet, but if this kicks off...
I guess there may be cheaper alternatives to the one I would like to get that could do this !
I was interested until you became so firm about the use of images elsewhere :(
For £25, I gotta be a bit picky. Depends what you have in mind. Terms not fixed, just wanted to be clear. Depending on the use you have in mind (pm me) I'm sure we could work something out.
Wimmin! :hihi: I believe the other term for them may be 'customers' or 'clients' ;)
Realistically, the majority of your clients are likely to be 'wimmin' - have a read back over this thead ;)
I believe the other term for them may be 'customers' or 'clients' ;)
Indeed. Only playing :suspect:
TattyBear 13-04-2007, 21:51 Perhaps if people want specific backdrops they can pick where the want the pictures to be taken and if its not far away see if dafoot would meet there, such as a park for instance. You can get some lovely show standing picks in a park and also fun ones :)
On the legal side, it always belongs to the photographer, unless you sell it. Pedantic, but then that's my middle name.
In this digital age providing proofs could be awkward.
If you put them on the web, they can be captured.
If you send a cd it can be copied.
You might have to go in person with a sample of the best shots either on a lappy or printed out, and if they decline to purchase then walk away with them, anything else is asking to be ripped off.

All the above is true, however I can reduce the photo sufficiently to render printing result not that great[tm]. Or include a watermark.
Currently thinking if doing house calls...take my laptop and show straight away.
Laptop is a good way, impresses people with tech and they can't copy it.
Problem with degraded photos is that they just don't look as impressive!
Good news for those that wanted pretty backgrounds...I may be able to invest in a one or two. They're not as pricey as I had assumed!
MARY POPPINS 14-04-2007, 09:51 Dont think I've got the idea:loopy: do you take the photo
and then give it to us on a disc and then do we get it printed,
or can we print it off on the computer ourselves,
Think I'm having a wimmins senior moment,
just a good job I'm not blonde as well:thumbsup:
Hi dafoot- sounds pretty reasonable and good fun. Of course, trying to get our barmy bengal and his buddies to stay put would be fun, but I once read an article about pet photography and there are lots of distraction techniques you can try to keep the animal focussed on the camera (usually involving someone in the background waving an interesting toy about - nb works better for cats than dogs!) I might be interested at some stage - would love to get the dobermutt in a decent shot with a professional looking background.

I can work either way. I'm not tying myself (or customers) into a particular way of doing things.
If you want it on disc to print yourself, that's fine. Probably better for me.
If you want me to arrange prints for you rather than digital format I can do that for you.
Katkin - the fun aspect is one reason I chose to see if any interest from people in pet pics rather than people portraits.
I have now added a page on my website for photography idea...I'll try to keep it up to date with prices etc.
Some more sample pics available now...
http://www.photoboxgallery.com/DaFoot
Did my first appt. at the weekend....results can't be that bad, had an order for prints ;)
I'll make a few of them available in due course (have been asked not to make all pics public, so the rest of you have to wait a bit :P).
As an aside...would it be useful to people if I got some cards made up with an email addy/mobile do you think?
Idea being that if people were happy they would pass on cards to (non-forum) freinds.
:suspect: damm horse better hurry up and finish moulting so I can get some pics done! I'm not getting any while she looks all patchy. :D
I hope you realise dafoot that I want some pretty random photos taking! I have always wanted a pic of me on Rhias back with a cowboy hat on and no shoes! leaning down to feed her. ;) woops just read that back and it sounds like I would only be wearing only the hat!!!! er, no, normal clothes just no shoes.
Apart from that I mainly just want random snaps of the cheeky mare. Would this be ok?

Yeah, we'd already said your g/f and my b/f would be there hadn't we :)
I'm not really that bothered about you putting photos places but would want to check where they would be put first. If that makes sense.

Nowhere I wouldn't put pics of my sis.
matsalleh 17-04-2007, 15:33 Wouldn't something similar to a model release form be applicable? Copyright is a very tricky and complicated subject.Get advice (forum legal eagle?),but give it a go.If someone pays you to take photos, who keeps the copyright, client or photographer.
This used to be my pet until it ate me.

You're quite right matsalleh, (c) is a tricky minefield. I was hoping to keep this little project pretty informal, but I guess , looking at comments in the thread, it would be worth formalising something.
Just means more time fart-arsing about instead of taking pics! :)

Bit strange that one,he is wild in theory but seems to have his own niche. He seems to have chosen to live where he can come and go as he pleases,is not being harrassed or mistreated. The best of both worlds.

I am happy to oblige, if you don't mind a stranger taking pics of kids?
I'll bring along ID/CRB check if you want?
Will PM you...
For those that wanted them, I have now put some pics in my public gallery of last shoot.
At the request of the owner, I have removed portraits that include the owner.
Should have some more to add after this weekend.

MARY POPPINS 19-04-2007, 10:17 Thay are realy good cant wait to gat mine done
TattyBear 19-04-2007, 11:56 Ben did a grand job taking pictures. I cant wait for the prints. The dogs had a lovely time, even though it was really hot! He is really friendly and so is his partner. Im sure you will have a lovely time and be pleased when you have your photographs done! :)
Coo...thanks all!
A glowing reference indeed from TattyBear, even though the actual prints haven't arrived yet! (though of course they'll be lovely ;) )
wow Dafoot- your photos are fab! Pippa and Molly look so at ease and outdoor shots are definitely more natural than ones posed indoors, don't you think?
I'd love you to do Ailsa, the daft dobermutt, but shes a bit of a giddy pillock at times and not used to being photographed or approached by strangers. Having said that, when we're in the park, she's usually more focussed on her tennis ball when we're in the 'quiet field' away from jogger,s cyclists and other distractions. We try to film her, but she runs so fast we usually only get her b*m or a photo of the grass and an empty space where a doberman was stood only seconds before the shutter was released...
How close did you get to Molly and Pippa? How quickly did they start to feel comfortable having a camera pointed at them? How easy was it to get them to 'pose'?
Tattybear, did you keep them occupied playing whilst Dafoot snapped away? (They are fabulous looking dogs, by the way).
Keep up the good work, I'm sure we will be in touch at some stage...for Ailsa and the felines. xk
- Some photos me/ the other half have taken of our lot on Alfie's Blog, by the way and on

TattyBear 19-04-2007, 13:16 Hi,
I cant speak for how easy Ben found photographing them however I can say that for a short time (it was very hot) if we told them to sit and stay they would, then I would (or my partner) stand behind Ben and hold something up so that they were looking at the camera. Then he took some shots of them playing. My dogs felt at ease straight away, Molly is a right poser! lol. He got very close to them, when he was taking a shot of one dog my other dog would go right up to the camera, very funny. My dogs love attention though and being fussed so from my point of view it was easy, im glad they would sit and stay when I told them to because otherwise we probably wouldnt have had any portrait shots. :)
well they came out fab, Tattybear- I bet you're really pleased with the results. Lovely dogs.
Molly & Pippa were very easy to work with, biccy or two and they loved me ;) (of course I checked first they were allowed biccy).
Like any youngish dog - playful and fidgety....just makes this sort of thing more fun :)
Maybe a bit too freindly when trying to take pics...as they just wanted to know what the camera was doing! Good fun though.
TattyBear 20-04-2007, 20:30 HI everyone, Just to let you know I have got my prints and they are lovely! I would highly recommend Ben! :)
A few pics from todays shoot now live in the gallery.

Lovely pics, whose dogs are they?
I have had requests to remain anonymous from some people on here, so I'll leave it to the owner to say hello if (s)he wishes...
Sorry ;)
TattyBear 22-04-2007, 22:53 ok, well I just wanted to say I think your dogs are lovely but I really like your alsatian.
:D I recognise that pack :)
My fave pic has to be number 4 - the 'don't you dare buy me' look :hihi:
MARY POPPINS 23-04-2007, 09:41 Hi everybody they belong to me,
Strix, as you know Barney never wanted anybody to buy him,
thats how he ended up staying, with that look.
Ben did a super job, the dogs loved him especially Timba,
helped by a few smackos!
I've done a few shoots now, all gone pretty well I think.
While I will continue to offer a visit/session with no charge, I will have to start asking for a 50% minimum deposit on any prints that you choose to order. Payable at time of ordering.
Of course you still only pay for pics you want - so if there aren't any you like from a session - you don't pay anything.
HI,
Just seen your pics they are really good. I like them all but the one with the bird landing is really good.
We have three cats and I would have photos of them done. So hopefully sometime soon I will be pming you.
Gizzy
I'll look forward to it gizzy
Which gallery are you looking at? dafoot.co.uk?
Starting putting together a website for this thing to allow people to buy images/prints.
Can now offer facility to put pictures online password protected so only the person who I took pics for/of can see them.
It's not looking too pretty yet though....
