View Full Version : Transferring a large file

I want to send a large (over 10Mb) database file to a friend.

I can't email it as both her email addresses reject such a large file.

I can't copy it onto a CD as her CD drive is broken.

So what's the easiest way? Shared virtual space?

Any ideas, please?

Thanks

Have you zipped it?

Most database files zip down rather nicely. If you've not zipped it up, try that and see what it goes down to.

Other idea would be to create a gmail / hotmail /yahoo account - all have lots of free storage.

Or you could use a site such as www.sendspace.com and then send her then link that it gives you.

Do one of you have an FTP account you could use?
How about a USB pen (guess you're not averse to physical media as you mention CDs).

Doh! Why didn't I think of zipping it? It reduced to 1.2MB - the job's a good 'un!

Thanks

Gmail and Yahoo certainly let you have loads of storage space although not certain about hotmail as I dropped using hotmail when it decided to wiped out all my e-mails when I tried to reset my password!
However both Google Mail and Yahoo still have a maximum attachment size which is about 10 MB.
So if the attachment being sent is 10MB then the actual recieved e-mail will likely exceed those free e-mail account limits.

You can use gmail as an online hard drive.
I use this http://gdisk.sourceforge.net/

If you get stuck with a similar problem in the future and it won't compress small enough then use the compression program to split it into multiple files that are below the maximum attachment size e.g. split 10MB file into 2 x 5MB.

Selecting or typing the required size of the volumes in a combo box in your compression program and then sending a few emails with the split volumes attached isn't what I'd call a lot of messing around but each to their own. Depending on how many you have to split it into it's possibly less work.

If you upload to a storage/sharing site you have to create an account (maybe not on all of them), start the upload, wait for the upload to finish, get the address of the uploaded file once it's complete and then send the link to your friend.

Much of a muchness really :)

10Mb down to 1.2Mb?
I NEVER get anything like that reduction with Winzip!
"Why not?" is obviously my next question!

Depends on what format the file is that is being compressed, if it's a lot of 'random' data then the compression algorithm isn't going to find many patterns - without patterns it won't be able to compress anything. If the file is made up of similar chunks of data then the compression algorithm will be a lot more efficient. A database usually has fixed size fields in it which leads to chunks of repeated data in the file which is great for compressing.

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/file-compression.htm seems to give a good grounding in compression methods.

yes splitting a file IS more hassle AND fearful of the file not going back as it should, its also an older, more dated technology

most of those sites you dont join, you just use, obviously the likes of yousendit which you can get added benefits by joining (free). also if you do it a lot then joining once would prolly be an advantage
and yes i think going to a website, upoloading one file, copying and pasting a link into 1 email IS a lot easier than chopping a file into say 10 bits, opening your email, writing 1 or more emails and adding 10 bits as attachments, then sending.
also the other person opens 1 file rather than 10

depends what you zip

documents and data compresses more
music and video files barely anything (IF anything)
