From First bus website:
04/11/2004 First increase service frequency to Derbyshire Lane
First, South Yorkshire’s leading bus operator has today announced an increase in the frequency of the bus service between Graves Park and Sheffield city centre.
The frequency improvement in relation to Service 2, which operates along Derbyshire Lane, will come into effect from Monday 8th November with the full support of both the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and Sheffield City Council. These changes mean customers will enjoy a service providing double the frequency, with buses every 30 minutes during most of the day, Monday to Friday between the City and Graves Park.
Brandon Jones, Commercial Director of First in South Yorkshire commented; “This service increase demonstrates that we do listen to our customers and have acted accordingly.” Mr Jones added “We hope that the residents of Derbyshire Lane who campaigned for this change will take advantage of the increased service frequency”
Cllr Jan Wilson, Sheffield City Council said “I’m glad that local people have been listened to – this shows its worthwhile to make your views known.”
Dave Young, Head of Transport Integration at the SYPTE added; “ I’m pleased to welcome the improvements to bus services for residents along Derbyshire Lane. It is good to see bus operators listening to and responding to the needs of their customers”.

gremlin_mick 05-11-2004, 11:32 And what about us that live the other side of town?
Why arn't we allowed to have a more frequent bus service?
We already have the worlds worst service on Prince of Wales Road (the 7), and buses to Meadowhall are just as bad.....
Its because the people on Derbyshire Lane have been out there and complained..
Its a pretty big hill, and you cant expect old people to want to walk up and down it to catch a more regular bus, esp. in the cold season!
Every bus i see seems to go to woodhouse. If we got rid of the 52 route, there would be over 565,000,000 buses free for everyone else. Bah.

But the 52 is like THE most reliable route in Sheffield... And not to mention the fact that getting rid of it would render a lot of students unable to get to the Unis because not all of them drive, and the Hallam campuses aren't in walking distance unless you live in Broomhill.

I agree that the No. 7 is the worst bus service. Since I moved and started catching it (called something else originally) it hasn't been on time once. There are often 3 in a row missed out meaning you have to wait over an hour. Apparantly it is because there isn't enough time allocated for the drivers to complete the route. About half the time it really takes, so the delays backup throughout the day. This would also explain the need to drive at 35mph (yes I could see the speedometer) over speed bumps in a 20mph area. The drivers are annoyed about it too as they get the stick for been late but the people who can do anything about it wont.

The 52 between crookes and woodhouse has to be the most frequent bus in south yorkshire...
One approximately every six minutes... (at peak)
god! you can walk from Crookes to Handsworth/ Woodhouse, just by stepping from bus to bus, and not miss a step!
I cannot see just how the fact that the student population is large in the crookes area warrants a 6-minute service...
especially where there are services such as the no 7 (as has been mentioned) which are so poor.
PT
I live on the 52 route.... every six minutes is a great service.
However I drive a car and would be more than happy to see every bus disappear so i can halve the time it takes me to get to work.
(T020 - I know its off topic and i apologise most sincerely... no honestly I do)
ToryCynic 05-11-2004, 18:07 The 52... I've heard of that, think I saw it whilst out and about... Crookes - somewhere IIRC.
Alex
Ps - your buses seem pretty frequent; a pity about the miserableness of the person in charge of it...

*sigh*
And here we go again, sorry Alex but change the bloody record for christ sake.
NOT all bus drivers are mardy arses, sure SOME of them are but don't tar them all with the same brush, please.
The number 2 circular bus service has always been terrible in the past from my experiance. As well as been constantly late many of the buses used to be 'missing' far too often.
Captain_Scarlet 05-11-2004, 22:44 Doesn't the 2 come from nowhere and go nowhere ?
surely increasing the 20 on Derbyshire lane that comes from Hemsworth to HillsthingCityplace would have been wiser...
"This service increase demonstrates that we do listen to our customers and have acted accordingly." ==> My arse
Actually traveline is 01709 515151 not 0870 608 2 608 (that is National Traveline not South Yorkshire)!
noseyrosie 06-11-2004, 15:09 Well the number 2 used to be invaluable for students from Tapton, King Edwards, St Maries, Notre Dame, High Storrs, SIlverdale and ABbeydale schools. They've re-routed it so now the only bus between the South and South-West of the city has disappeared and all these kids have to go through town every day, which costs more money, takes longer, and just causes more congestion. Oh, and we have to wait around in town in the dark.
But I've already mentioned this one, haven't I :D
silverknight 06-11-2004, 17:19 The travel line number works on both it just that the PTE decided to keep 01709 515151 in its marketing and everybody else in the UK uses the other number!!!!
I have to agree with Captain_Scarlet. The 20 would have been a better route to improve. The frequency of the route is fine but the reliabilty is the main issue!

I disagree. If you look back to what First actually did in July, they replaced the 33 and 34 with the 2 and 20. The 33 and 34 went from the City Centre to Hemsworth the same way as far as Chesterfield Road, but one went up Derbyshire Lane and one went up Scarsdale Road so covered different parts of Norton Lees. Departures alternated. However what happened is the 20 directly replaced one as an 'Overground' which increased the frequency, however the other route was virtually stripped of it's bus service, left with just one bus an hour - and via Abbeydale Road/Woodseats Road rather than Chesterfield Road. Not only that it was welded onto the corpse of the old outer circle, so city bound buses come all the way from Meadowhall via Darnall and Gleadless, making it less reliable.
