there was no dispute over money and never has been they took the washer away then telephoned to say it would b £120 if we paid cash but if we needed a receipt we would be charged VAT the only time money was mentioned was when i asked if there was a discount for oap s like it said in there impressive advert
they said no on at least five occasions it was supposed to be on the van for delivery but never arrived thre was never ay dispute and the money is here when they bring it back.i took advice and was told to give them 7 days notice in writing which i did to no avail i have now taken legal advice with regards to recovering my stolen goods

I'm sorry Roughy but I think you are a trifle naive. It's just not worth forking out £120 to repair a dishwasher, they are fairly easy to repair ( at low cost) and, if it was beyond economical repair you may as well buy new. Repair companies like ABEL rely on this sort of ignorance/naivety, it earns them a good living. I am always amazed how many people like your good self are out there willing to keep these leeches on Easy Street.

Magneteer - thats a little harsh... if you dont know anything about what you are getting repaired then any1 will try and take you for as much as they can. if i had to get a computer or hi-fi repaired i would know what was a rip off but if i was getting a washing machine or dishwasher repaired i would have no clue. on some occasions you have to bite the bullet and belive that there are some honest people out there. sadly this is hardly ever true

has anyone got any ideas how to get it back

It sounds like they are trying to evade paying VAT, if they've said that they will accept lower payment for cash.

Do your duty as a honest citizen (and get your own back on them) and report them to the Customs and Excise!

That's what I was going to say, but you beat me to it.

Small companies have tried it with me before, saying that VAT is only applicable if a VAT receipt is requested. It's rubbish, a tax dodge and illegal. I wouldn't trust any company who comes out with that one.

Not that it helps in your current situation, unfortunately. If you've already taken legal advice, then go with it. It sounds like you still have the money though? If so, and if they still won't bring it back, ask your legal advisor if you can just give them notice that you don't want it back at all and to stick it. Then you can get a nice new one with the money you save.

£120 quid for a repair?! . Let 'em keep the damn thing! Put the £120 plus the money youre wasting on phonecalls (plus the VAT ;) ) towards a brand new shiny one.

In the meantime, time to dust off those marigolds

Winner

yes u r all right but is that not what they want .if i say dont bring it back , will it be for sale for £120 pounds in their shop , for doing naff all if i thought it could be fetched back or i could go and collect it i i would be qiite happy in the knowledge that i could go to the tip and dump it and know that no one has made money off my husbands back if we said keep it is that not what they want, it is really a matter of principle now why should people like these be able to rip people off, that has worked all their life for the good of others my husband was a fireman and put his own safety before his own before he retired, he feels very loathe to say they can keep it
because all he ever did was work to look after other people

Spot on Edd, theres your answer Roughy. You can get a new 'un for just over £200. It doesn't matter if it's a washing machine, computer, car, cooker etc, it's always worth checking out the price of replacing with new rather than pay silly money for repairs. Anyway, hope you get it sorted one way or another, good luck.

What did your legal adviser say apart from giving them 7 days notice in writing?

Another thought would be to report them to trading standards and personally I would suggest you try someone like Watchdog on the BBC - that type of bad publicity usually makes them think again and companies that rip off pensioners and usually get full force to such programmes - could be worth a try anyway.

yes they told us to contact trading standards which we have done and they said wait 3 working day and they are going to look into the company we have also been in touch with yellow pages who have also said they will look into stopping them advertising

its times like these that having a large friend comes in handy.

they seem to listen to reason better when your big mate is stood nearby haha.

im not advocating violence...just saying people often are more friendly to people who can hold them above their head using one hand.

post on every messege board you know, report them to anyone you can think off, phone them, write to them, basically just nag the hell out of them. even if you dont get anything back you will feel a little bit better.

would the police help in a situation like this, seen as though in a sense they have stolen the washing machine.

exactly but can you see what would happen if we walked into a police station and reported someone came in to our housewith our permission and removed our dishwasher you know what the law says possesion is 9/10 of the law. maybe we should all go shoplifting/burgling/ mugging and say well this is mine prove me wrong

Actually that is wrong. There is no such instance and if there was the police wouldn't be able to prosecute people for "handling stolen goods". Have you heard anything from trading standards yet. If not chase them up, alternatively you could get onto the media - try the Star consumer desk as well as the BBC watchdog programme.

just heard from trading standards abel appliances were made bankrupt 2weeks ago and are nortorious for robbing the public they are being prosecuted so at least justice may be done?
they did say we could try and go and fetch it but seeing as they are such shady characters i dont think we will bother.
just a word of warning though there is nothing to stop them starting up again under another name so watch out for the address 23MEADOWHEAD.
