My grandparents used to live on Tuffolds Close on the Manor Estate now no longer exists. But when I used to visit them we always went to becketts chip shop on the manor top this would have been in the mid 70s early 80s. I remember their chips and cake were out of this world! they used to fry their stuff in dripping - also remember a chip shop on corporation st again this no longer exists and Mr Beckett had something to do with that I think his Daughter owned it back in mid 90s. Anyway doe anyone know of any good chippies as good as theirs? Wondered also if anyone remembered the Windle family my uncles are David, Johnny, William, Eddy, Beryl me mum and Sue Windle.

Their son went on to be a famous playwright didn't he?
I still remember O'Toole at the Old Vic in "Waiting for Haddock"

They dont. Theyre nothing like as good as when Mr Beckett ran it. As an aside, I went to school with Mr Becketts daughter, Isabelle.

He also wrote that tv programme about old people in a nursing home waiting for their tea. It was called "waiting for cod"

I think the becketts sold off that chippy because it wasn't doing the business like the one across the road & thats when the greeks bought it mid to late 80's if my mind serves me correctly

You are correct...,
But, it's the Manor fish bar that owns them, not the old Becketts that Piker is on about...

I loved old Becketts.. Proper chips they were.. You used to open up the paper, and they were just a lump of chips all stuck together..
Mmmmmm:)

Thank you, and just to say that when I was diving a white van I used to adjust my route so I would be near Becket's at dinner time, especially so I could call in, but when it changed hands I went a few times and then stopped going. It's not been the same since.

We used to have Becketts chips saturday afternoons after mum and dad had been shopping in the 70;s They used to call to Fishwicks (was next door to the cinema at Intake) and then we used to have chips and fishcake and a cuppa..lovely. Fishwicks used to sell Fishballs quite a novelty then :)

I disagree - they don't taste the same as they did when it was called Becketts!

I cam back to Sheffield last month and tried some - not the same at all :(

I now live 50 yards from the chip shop in question, and would not even cross the road to eat them, the smell is really bad, i well remember seeing people waiting in line a 100 yards long out side the shop (on a Saturday morning) when it was Becketts, they were that good. Tip of the day, never buy from a chippy that has not got a queue...

My mum used to work in the shop next door but one to becketts(hardware & fancy goods), used to go and get us chips and cake for dinner and stay at work with her instead of going back to school. it was great chippy, really greasy Mmmm

The chips dont taste like they used to, but they are still ok. I hate the fishcakes though, they are just way too fishy for me to eat, just the smell is enough to put me off. :gag:

Last time I went in that place was about 4 years ago with my son-in-law and the portions were really tiny. S-I-L asked if they did childrens portions, to which the reply was NO. 'What the f**k do you call this then', he asked, followed by a stunned silence from the staff & management.

The place is a total sh**hole to be avoided like the plague.

Does anyone remember Henderson's chippy on Darnall Road? They sold excellent fish and chips. After they closed (the council compularily purchased the surrounding houses on Makin Rd, Makin Place and Webster Place and have done nothing woth the land in over 30 years) Beckett's was the only place to go.

Beckett's also used to have a chippy on Staniforth Road back in the 70's. Once a week we would have our supper from there - chips and fishcake cost 10p! Bloody lovely they were too.

Beckett's fish and chips were the best in Sheffield; it's making my mouth water to think of them. Not sure what healthy eating fanatics would think about the dripping, though - but you can't make proper fish and chips without it.

We used to go to the one on staniforth Road
Used to go and meet my Mum from work she had a cleaning job
Cant remember where now
any way we nearly always went to Mrs Buckets as we called it on the way home.
Best fish cakes ever, and can anyone remember having scraps put on
which was loads of batter pieces not the healthiest of options.

Becketts was/still are the best in Sheffield,mr Beckett used to live in a bungalow on Seagrave Cresant at Gleadless. i used to clean his windows when i first left school.
When my wife was pregnant i had to call nearly everyday to Becketts at Manor top, all she would eat is his puka-pies and chips, and could tell if i went anywhere else.He also ownes/owned the one on herriers road now called Norwood chippy. Still the best in Sheffield.
All his shops are kitted out the same, same menus and equipment etc.even down to the tommato timers on the top of the fryers.

Ahhh, Becketts..... hardened the arteries of a generation they did :hihi:

We used to run to the Manor Top from Hurlfield School at lunch time to go and get a chip-butty with scraps for the princely sum of 25p. Then we would either sit outside what is now Somerfields (I think!) and savour every mouthful or.... we'd go and wag it in Lyndixs' mums shop - well, me and her big sister did anyway! :hihi:

Anyone remember Adam's fish & chips on broad st? My aunt's f & c shop. She operated it in the 40s, 50s, through to the early to mid 60s. I'm admittedly biased but I think they were the best fish & chips anywhere. Every Friday during the summer my brother & I would have our mid day meal (still called the "dinner?") in our aunt's back kitchen, followed by ice cream from the nearby Granelli's store with canned fruit. What a feast. Over here everyone seems to think that good f & c have to be dripping in grease. They shouldn't of course. Nice & crisp, but never greasy. My aunt always used to say that the temperature of the fat was key. And like has been mentioned, the lard did a much better job than today's vegetable oils. Bon appetit.
