Bulldogs are fantastic. My bf's family have staffie bulls. We may get one, but we're thinking about getting a french bulldog.

How much are you paying out of interest?

Just to clear up some of the confusion there seems to be about this: an American Bulldog looks like a pitbull, is that correct? It's nothing like the traditional British Bulldog in appearance. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Good for you! It is about time the Kennel Club recognised American Bulldogs, as well as Pit Bulls and American Staffordshire Terriers. Is it from the Johnson line? They are nice, big dogs. We have an English Bull Terrier [big, brindle/white bitch] ourselves, but I would like an American Bulldog too. The consensus appears to be that they are much less aggressive in general than Am Staffs and Am Pit Bulls. Many, particularly the Johnson line are kept as farm dogs and grow up in the bosom of many a family. Good luck.

You lucky git kirky!. I have a staffie but i would also love to own an American pitbull, alas i do not have the reddies to buy one (can i have one on the never never?).
I once took my mates uncles American pitbulls (back when you were allowed 2 or more) for a walk up Rivelin. One of them decided to start getting narky with me so i off'ed him into the river, good as gold after that!

Breed Name: American Bulldog

Description:
The American Bulldog is a powerful, athletic short-coated dog, strongly muscled, and well boned. American Bulldogs generates the impression of great strength, endurance and exhibits a well-knit, sturdy compact frame. The American Bulldog should be evaluated as a working dog, and exaggerations or faults should be penalized in proportion to how much they interfere with the dogs ability to work.

Weight: Male: 75 - 125 lbs.; Female: 60 - 100 lbs.

Colors:
All white, pied, or up to 90% color; brindle or red patches (red is defined as any shade of tan, bro

Coat:
The coat is short, close, and stiff to the touch.

Temperament:
The essential characteristics of the American Bulldog are those which enable it to work as a hog and cattle catching dog, and a protector of personal property. These tasks require a powerful, agile, confident dog with a large head and powerful jaws. The American Bulldog is a gentle, loving family companion who is fearless enough to face an angry bull or a human intruder; Good with children; Good with pets

Care and Exercise:

Health Issues:
A very healthy, hardy dog. Some strains have hip dysplasia.

History/Origin:
Bulldogs in England were originally working dogs who drove and caught cattle and guarded their masters property. The breed's strength, courage, and familiarity with livestock led to its popularity in the brutal sport of bull baiting. When this sport was outlawed in England, the original type of Bulldog disappeared from Britain and was replaced with the shorter, stockier, less athletic dog we now know as the English Bulldog. The original Bulldog, however, was preserved by working class immigrants who brought their working dogs with them to the American South. Small farmers and ranchers used this all-around working dog for many tasks. By the end of World War II, however, the breed was almost extinct. Mr. John D. Johnson, a returning war veteran, decided to resurrect this breed. Along with Alan Scott and several other breeders, Johnson began carefully to breed American Bulldogs, keeping careful records and always with an eye for maintaining the breed's health and working abilities.

Category: Rare, Working

Was just wondering as I know they cost a lot. When I was looking into French bulldogs the breeder sites say they can cost ~£800 and there can be a year waiting list!

Kirky, Well the american pitbulls can be very aggressive.BUT before you say anything. They are as good as there trainer allows them to be. I have done a lot of dog training and they all respond to kindness but need to learn who's the boss. Ya know just like the men lol. I have a labrador who we trained and she is 12yrs now. She is a therapy dog and has won lots of ribbons for obedience. You know the story (my dogs best).
I wish you all the luck with yours keep us posted wont you. I think they are about to ban the pitbulls in this country We have had a lot of trouble with them but like I say it's nearly always the owners fault.L ots a luv and praise and she'll be be rite mate
Kirky. You should get all the info on them from the internet. I also have a little maltese dog but these are just little playthings. They are just little companions for the big fellas

I wish people would'nt blame the breed of a dog for being agressive :nono:.
When i got my Staffie my partners uncle took one look and banned her entire family from coming to our house. 7 years on and obviously they now know they are in more danger from the slobbering they receive from her.

ive had staffs for years mate,i love em to bits but a pit bull can be unpredictable, its just something ive always said i'm sure 99 pitbulls out of a hundred are spot on but i'd never forgive myself if owt ever happend to one of the kids because of a dog i brought into the house.

Yeah, well done on finding anoter, never heard of this breed before. If a breeder allows you to have a pup, they ought to follow through the sale really.

Thought I used to know dogs because I showed spaniels for as a kid and came across loads of KC registered breeds only I suppose.
