Gday charlotte, I lived on Boynton Road from 1955 to 65, the good old days,
when the Forum picture house was there and before drugs etc.
Roe Woods, the meadows & the 7 ponds were my playground & it was safe to walk the streets at night, I went to Shirecliffe secondary school as it was called at that time & left at 15 in 1958.
I had a look at the old place when I visited in 1990, rusty wire on the shop windows & the old neighbours were afraid to go out because of people breaking in when they did, nothing stays the same, it wasn't the glorious place that I grew up in.

Hi Charlotte, I lived on Morgan Road from 1941 to about 1950. I attended Shirecliffe School juniors/seniors until 1950. Loved the area and have many happy memories.
Teachers I remember- Miss Cox Juniors head, Mr Winnerah, Mr Ross, Miss Collins PT Mr Siddall was seniors Head I think -can't think of more at the moment. Regards

My Dad was Brian Wilson who was the main campaigner against the council demoloshing houses on the estate.

Why did they demolish some of the houses briggy ? there were a lot of older terraced hoses that were a lot worse than the ones on the Shirecliffe.

briggy1967
02-07-2007, 19:26
They demolished the houses Skippy because the labd they were on was far more valuble to prospective building companies than the houses

I live quite near to Shirecliffe and whenever I walk over that way, it always makes me wonder why they seemed to have knocked just random houses down. It's not even like they knocked a complete road down ready to re-build on, it's the odd few houses here and there. What's all that about?

briggy1967
03-07-2007, 01:48
They only knocked a few houses down because of the campaigning that my father and his team did to stop them demoloshing most of shirecliffe, and yes it does look ugly and stupid but at least some people (who didnt want to move) still have houses

Holza1987

They knocked down loads on my road in shirecliffe (penrith road) im the side near the tip and theres like one block gone one there etc.. all the way along because the house on this end that have stayed are privately owned or like us 3 out of 4 are,,

I've lived there all my life, schooled at Southey nursery then juniors & moved on to Shirecliffe Secondary Modern & left without qualifications like most of the others.
There have been a lot of changes along lifes path and many things dissappeared,
The fruit shop at the side of the chippy, the newsagents, CoOp Butchers, Ray's barbers, bungalows through the woods, The flicks Sat matinee show(1 would pay and then let the rest in through the fire door neer the bogs) (now tesco).
Took in Pea shooters that bloody hurt if they got you in the right place & a clip round the earhole or a thump if you got caught.

Never had school meals, always spent the money and nipped home coz Ma & Pa were at work.
Teachers I remember in junior school was only Pop Mason, I was in his class and had the job of cleaning his fishtank out.
At Shirecliffe I remember,,, Mr. Robinson (head), Mr Staley (woodwork) Mr Davidson (geography) Alf & Bill Thomas (Maths) Mr Davies (Science) Freda (Atilla the Hun) Mr Quaill (I think he ended up marrying someone in our class) Mr Smith(music) Mr Valentine (mentally impaired) Forgot the art teachers name but he spoke with a whistles in his words. Chinny ??? (Tech Drawing..a nasty piece of work!!).
Biggest rebellion was to cut the school tie up after getting my leaving report (wow, they probably stab a teacher now !!)

Been in work all my life same as my dad & his dad and raised a daughter who I am proud of.

My dad comes from Shirecliffe, he lived at 58 Longley Avenue West.
I remember as a kid staying there with my gran and going across to the beer off shop, i think it was called mabel hammonds? my dad is Graham Hoole. Great area then when i was growing up in the 70's and 80's, doesn't look too good now though. sad really.

Ive lived at shirecliffe for around 12yrs.now. Originally from Gleadless via loads of other places inc.shoreham street for a large part of my married life,i first knew about shirecliffe when my dad married a woman from the area she lived on Galsworthy rd,They moved to a house on Penrith road opposit the school -Herries comp. (Now park wood High) next to the path way leading down to Scath wood. My two step brothers and step sister were brought up in shirecliffe,my dad passed away around 12 yrs ago and my step family have moved on,we all went in the 5 arches all the time and occasionally the Dev. (The Devonshire)
Shirecliffe has changed over the years sadly not for the better there are a few people who spoil the area for everyone else,I have very good neighbours on penrith road and a few realy good friends in shirecliffe, its about time all the good people in Shirecliffe got together and did something about the SCUM who are spoiling a good area for the rest of us!

I lived at Shirecliffe for about 18 months 6 years ago, and moved away when they demolished my house. I didnt really want to go there as it was quite far away from my parents but we had no trouble there. Still dont get why they demolished the houses, they were sturdily built! just needed central heating imo!

I used to live on Adkins Road which was behind the forty foot then in 1975 we moved to Standish Close up near the Timbertop. My parents still live there now but are thinking of selling up.

Nuttalls had the Victoria in Grimesthorpe before they took the Fortyfoot. I went to school with their son Terry and new him quite well. He would probably be about 63 or 64 now I would think. I didn't know that they had a son called Jeremy. They had two little girls but one died when she was only a baby. The other ones name was Kim I think but I'm not sure.

I remember them first building Busk Meadow, then some years later they built some houses in the wood between Busk M & Shirecliffe road, those woods were a paradise for kids when I was growing up there, so were the 7 ponds area behind the Atlas & Norfolk football ground, and also the Meadows, until they turned it into a tip.

Hey TFishcake: are you saying that your wife is Josephine Robinson? (or, at, least I take it that you know her). She and I were in the same class on a number of occasions as we made our way through the various Shirecliffe schools (I even have a class group photo with her (and me) on - from the junior school). Tell her Mick/Michael (was in the 5th form - senior school - with her - 1969/70) sends his regards - I'm sure she'll remember me: there weren't all that many kids in that particular class - it was the first '5th-form' that they'd had at that school for many years. How is she? Hope she is well.

Do we know each other? Mr. Quail married Kathleen Cunningham (though I've since heard that they eventually divorced) - she was in my class. I certainly remember most of the teachers you mention, but Mr Davies (science)? Don't remember him. We had Eric Smith for Chemistry (real nice guy - him). The 'art teacher' was Mr Morton - don't know about a whistle in his words - but he had some sort of eye impediment - blinked very frequently and was often referred to as 'Blinker'. 'Chinny... (Tech Drawing)' - the only one I can think of there was Mr Fairhurst, most commonly known as 'Punch' (due to his striking resemblence to the 'Punch & Judy' puppet!). 'Freda (Atilla the Hun) ' LOL Yep, I remember her. She was our 'Form teacher' when I was in the fifth year. We'd heard rumours that she only finished up at Shirecliffe because she'd been thrown out of the Gestapo for cruelty! LOL All great memories though!

What were The Meadows like before they turned it into a tip? And where was The Forum?
the meadows used to be a big playground for us,down at the bottom in front of the old cooling towers were called the black tip where allthe residue from the towers were dumped, round the corner from there there was a piggery(chap called frank rogers i think owned it).and it was knee deep in pig sh*t all the way round it,my mate once went in head first as we shinned round it.he,d still be stuck in it now if we hadnt pulled him out(very carefully)it were in his mouth,up his nose and in his ears,:gag:i have never laughed as much since, especially when we got him home, his mother took one look, said stop there,2 minutes later she chucked a bucket of water at him and shouted ,you dirty bleeder!at the back of the piggery were allotments and we used to go in the old greenhouses and bake the odd spud or two.going up towards parkwood springs were the cycle track and bowling green,up from there at the other side of the quarry(where shirecliffe college sports field were)before the houses on standish drive were built was a scrapyard that belonged to the wraggs,we got chased off there a few times, they used to live at the top of musgrave place and later moved to rutland road, though they all seemed decent lads.happy days but would keep clear these days, just a toxic dump.

What were The Meadows like before they turned it into a tip? And where was The Forum?

Theres a picture of the old Forum on Sheffield pictures.
The meadows stretched from Herries Rd on the northern boundary to Rutland Rd in the south, Shirecliffe is on the eastern boundary with neepsend on the western side, it was a vast open space in the 50's.
Some poor families use to go to the power station tip at Neepsend to collect coke from the dump site for their fires, there was also a dump where we used to go and get pen knives etc that had been dumped by some factory.
We also visited the piggeries in the area, and got pig droppings for the garden, the White Bridge was a good place for train spotting, another favourite pastime in those days, there was an old cemetry north of the bridge, where bodies had been buried with all their belongings, some were found after the graves had subsided.
Another great place was the old army base at the top of Cookswood Rd, where we used to climb on the old gun stands etc, some of the huts were still standing at the time, I think they turned that area into a heliport some years later.
On the other side of Shirecliffe road from the army camp was the 7 ponds, it was an area covered in allotments, many locals went to this area to fish, we used to catch frogs & tadpoles, at the other side of the ponds was what we called the 3rd wood, it was positioned between Firshill, Norwood & the Shirecliffe estate, the 2nd wood was where Busk Meadow was built, and the 1st wood was at the other side of Shirecliffe Rd, where they built a community hall or something.
Many kids from my era went collecting birds eggs, there were hundreds of nests around at that time, one day I found a baby magpie that couldn't fly, I took it home and fed it on bread and milk, that bird used to sit on my shoulder when I walked around the woods and became a lovely pet.
One day the bird flew off, I was a bit upset at the time, but that's nature for you, about a year later, I was in the back garden when this bird came and tried to fly onto my shoulder, it then flew onto the gutter of our house, where it's mate was sitting, it flew down again onto my head, wiped it's beak on me then flew away with the other one, I never saw it again.
Every Sunday afternoon, the 1st wood became a football ground, most of the blokes from the area, who were aged between 12 & 30 years turned up for a game of footy, sometimes there were 20 on each side, anyone and everyone was welcome, I doubt you would find such a friendly bunch of blokes around the Shirecliffe these days.

We used to go and play football on the atlas ground, not the academy one thats there now,it wasjust past the turn in for the academy where you turn down firshill, the groundsman (who we knew as charlie, dont know if that was his real name or the fact that he looked like he,d got a football between his shoulder blades)used to chase anyone who played football on his field, and you,ve never seen anyone run like he could for an old man,his build resembled iron maidens eddie, one particular day, we decided to see how close he could get to us before we shot off,and at the bottom of the field was a hole in the fence to the 7 ponds,as he neared us we all shot off in different directions, dont know how he managed it but as i went through the hole in the fence to join up with the others,he was waiting at the other side,i can only remember him feeling the back of my neck and as i wriggled to get away, went head first into a crop of stinging nettles,no shirt, just shorts,i can still see the old bug*er smirking now,and my parents were,nt impressed when i went home looking like the singing detective, come to think of it ,neither was i,but it would,ve got me out of dancing round the bloody maypole.

That could have been the same groundsman that was around in the mid 50's, he gave me a thick ear for taking a short cut across the footy pitch, there were 2 pitches at that time with a dressing shed between them.
He used to blow his stack evey year when they had a fair there, because the trucks chewed up all the grass, one year after a lot of rain, it was a sea of mud, I bet that peed him off no end.
Anyone remember a big gale, when a prefab was blown right over the road and landed on the footy pitch ?
Another goal in life was to try and beat the bus on a push bike to the top of Cookswood road, did it many times, I only wish I could ride one now.

Just wondered if anyone remembers my dad's family.
They lived on Herries Road across from the Five Archers pub.
My grandparents were George and Gladys Reed, My dad Walt and his 2 brothers George and Alan Reed.
They all went to Shirecliffe School.

I don't think i know your dads family. But did you know the Whiteheads who lived directly across from the Five Archers Pub. I used to go to Herries school with Lynne whitehead. We left School in 1984. I'd love to know what happened to her.

Can you say a couple of things about what the tip was like?

The Five Arches is boarded up now.

The brand-new school, Watercliffe Meadow, on Boynton Road opened to parents/children for the first time today. The grounds aren't quite finished and the rain's been pouring down, but the school building is amazing - clean, modern, bright - and the kids think it's fantastic - so do their parents!

It's what the community deserves!

Hi everybody, my grandad and grandmother used to live at no 1 Teynham Drive-George and Ivy Pearson. I was born there in 1953 my mother was Florence (sadly passed away on October 1st this year). My uncle is George Pearson and my aunt is Pauline both still living but unwell. I can remember lady with only one leg she used to get about with the aid of a crutch but I can't remember her name. I can recall a Carol Roney she was a friend of my Aunty Pauline. Used to work witha lad called Lol Bloomingstock (I think thats how they spell it) at Welded Alloys and Stainless Products opposite Wednesday's ground in the early 70's also a tall lad called Phil Hammond off Longley Avenue.

Hi Dogman,
I believe I was born next door to you (147 Longley Avenue West, house on the corner), two years earlier in 1951 I remember the family being called Pearson. I seem to remember one of them was a policemen and they were always borrowing - for some reason- vinegar.
The house on the other side (in Longley Avenue) of us were the Jamesons and they had a daughter named Maureen. We were the Marshall family, Mum & Dad were Ruth and George and the kids were me (Keith) and my sis Sylvia.
We moved to Parson Cross in 1954 I think. I remember runnng into the Jamesons drainpipe and splitting my forehead open. There was aguy across the road who had a car (about the only one on the street in those days.
He ambulanced me to the Northen Gen in his Austin 7.
I remember it so clearly even though it was over half a century ago

Best Wishes
Keith

My memories of the tip are rather different, I used to go there, with a sack or bucket to pick coke often in the depths of winter and woe betide me if I got clinkers. The coke was usually still very hot from the ovens but we picked because it kept the homefires burning and because coal was so short. I remember a neighbour's son coming out of the RAF and I took him to the tip to show him 'how to', I was about 10/11 and of course fell in love with him as foolish young girls do, but alas he was already 'attached':(

Hello all, I lived at 71 Longley Avenue west corner of the Keyhole with Boynton road with my Granparents (Cottingham)family all through to being 28.
I have many fond memories of all the kids who used to play in the keyhole.
the Hammonds I still keep in touch with Steve, Maxine lacey, Julie walker,Mick Smedley,Lee Marshall,Darryl(Faz)Holland, the Carnells,Andrew Norcliffe who lived with his Auntie Mary. the kids used to come from all over to play until really late at night must have annoyed all the oldtimers immensely.
Woe betide if the football went into Jud Walkers or Mr and Mrs Merrills
pristine Gardens.
The summer days were so long playing on the tip gone all day grass sledging on peices of cardboard that were strewn around in abundance.
After tea you would wait for Yankee Boy to come for an icecream, remember the Specials small cornet with a little ice lolly sat on the top. the Icescream mans name was Don but cant recall his wifes name.
What about the games British Bulldog, tiggy gaslamp, kickcan, tiggy off'nt ground, farmers wife and my favourite hide n seek using the top gaslamp as base. I do recall the bonfires the we had on the Bloominstocks back garden we used to put corregated sheets of asbestos on the fire to watch it explode into shrapnel peices that would fly everywhere it is a wonder someone was never killed.
Were you one of them kids who spent the best years of your lives in the Keyhole. regards to all John.

Also on the Shurcliffe can anyone recall when "Peters and Lee" the duo who won oppotunity knocks came to visit her Mother on Penrith Rd in the early mid 70s it was a real mob of kids trampling Gardens etc what fun we had.

To everyone who's replied to this thread & missed the post on 'General Discussion' page recently, Ellen Collier (ex-Shirecliffe School) has arranged a get together for pupils from the old school.
The meeting is at the Carbrook Hall pub, Attercliffe Road, on Saturday 21st Feb 2009.
A few of us have got together occasionally for about the last 18 months or so.
Those attending previously include Tony Ball, Colin Stagg, Dave Thomson, Kieth Corbet, Kieth Robinson, Albert Kershaw, Dereck Plant, Roger Starkes, John Hoing, Tony Damms, Maureen Jameson, Cathleen Chapman, Sue Dyson, Margaret Tew, even Clive Sanderson (the old english teacher). Appoligies to any one I've missed off the list.
If anyone recognises any of the above names & fancies a pint & a natter to put all the old myths to bed, come and have an hour with us.

I lived over the road from the five archers right up to around 1982, almost all my young life. It was a place far removed from today, we had the stores on Teynam shops with Quaills across the road, rays barbers, Parkins chippy and a betting shop, also the butchers, where, I believe Marti Cain used to work. I have fond memories of all of it, and the people where the making of the place.
I sometimes go to those same shops and I could cry, what a disaster, its like I would imagine a warzone to be like, and thats after the war, the pub is falling to bits the stores replaced by a jazzed up beer off, Quaills by a Chinese (I think) and God knows what else. All I can say is thank God I lived there when I did,'a sad reflection of our times'. But my parents still live there in the same house and although my time has all been spent in and around Hillsborough its always nice to go home.

Just wondered if anyone remembers my dad's family.
They lived on Herries Road across from the Five Archers pub.
My grandparents were George and Gladys Reed, My dad Walt and his 2 brothers George and Alan Reed.
They all went to Shirecliffe School.

I think I now who you mean I lived at 570 with my grandparents for a while when my dad was in the navy, then we moved further down the road to 612. The neighbours where, on the left Mrs Reed, (who we called Reedy), a lovely woman. I think She had a son who died in a car crash before my time, her husband was called Walt I think, he died when I was still young. Reedy had a relative who lived in the flats across the road from us called Mrs Middleton.
Next to her was a couple called Howe, dont remember much about them only that he was called Sam, on the other side was a woman called Mrs Robinson and at the side of her a couple called Robberts, a big feller if I remember rightly.

Hi there, I'm Paul, our kid lives in the Tankardsley area now and me, just behind Longley Pk. Ken lives next door to my mams now, he is 70 to day. Great times on Herries Rd as a kid with lovely people, it was all so differnt than what I see today. Anyway was I talking about the same Reedy, I remember when she had the Jack Russel, Rex, he was a nightmare me and our Dave was scared to death of the thing, LoL.

If this is the same kid we're talking about, it happened between 1958 & 60, he was talked into joining others when one stole a car from outside the Forum pictures [which was unheard of at that time] the car crashed around the Riverlin area, he was the only one killed.
He was a great kid and never got into any trouble, I seem to think he was still at school at the time, just goes to show what can happen when you give in to peer pressure.

Hi Skippy
The person you are talking about was Alan Reed and he was my uncle, although i never met him as he was killed before i was born, he was my dad's youngest brother. He died in 1961 2 weeks before he was 15, my mum has still got the piece from the paper when the accident was reported in the Star.
Did you live somewhere around Barrie and have something to do with motorbikes?

ps one or two threads about your uncle Alan, I always wondered what happened. I always remember it cropping up in conversation when I was realy young, very sad you wouldn't think Reedy carried that around with her she was always so cheerful.

I lived on Crumpsall rd from 1946 to64 and went to Longley juniors and Shirecliffe secondary the teachers were Mr Green(herman the german) sexy Mrs Brennan,Miss may, crafty dean,Langston,Alf & bill Thomas,Mr Craig Mr Smith, miss Woodvine,Mr Molynue(bullet)Valentine,Miss Rose,Staley,Mr Wragg,Wostenholme,Sidall,Ena****.Shirecliffe in those days was brilliant, the meadows was something else we could have taught the S.A.S a thing or two.The muckhills were where all the ash was dumped from the power station,we spent hours digging tunnels in them.Anyone remeber Ivan from the graveyard, one day he scared us all to death hed been asleep in a grave and heard us lot and got out,god yerv never seen us run so fast.Yes,the coke tip ,me and my mother used to push an old barrow down there in all weathers on a Saturday morning to pick cawks, thats when we had winters it took us nearly an hour to walk home and she would be crying with the cold, that was after five twelve hour shifts as a buffer while my dad was in the pub, devonshire or arches.I must know some of you out there,I used to have a two blues Triumph which I used to ride like a looney and hung around with Terry bedell,Dave Cooper,Tommy Powell,Francis Briggs,Ann Storey Rosie Boardman,Maureen Davitt,Johnie Creek.Happy days, sometimes!!

I hung around and went to school with many of those guys you are talking about pal. Although I came from over the other side of Herries Rd the tip was always a majical place, always something different to do. I hung around with the likes of Pete Green, Robert(sefy) Devy, Bob Smith, Steve Pegg, Jimmy Holmes and Paul Carnall (still do) also Daz Holland who is a smashing fella and Steve Hollyhead. I remember all the dens we would make only to turn up the next day to find someone had raided us. Do you remember when Peggy got burnt, he still had the scares up to leaving school. I could go on all day, so many good times.

Who could forget egar Wallace, only spent 3 days at school one year, he spent all his time at a piggery on the Meadows, I saw him years later in the Sicey pub after they had moved over that way.
Don't remember a Dave Stewart, but there was a bloke in that area that had a Talisman twin motorcycle, would that have been him.
There was a bloke called Bedall who knocked about with a Terry Fletcher from Boynton, who was a couple of years older than me, I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong.
What year did you leave school ?

Yeah,,, for about a year I lived on burnell road opposite the dog track and I used to visit ma on musgrave and when it was dark I would head home over the tip down past the back end of what is now the dumpit site ,skirt along the back of the houses on penrith then down the narrow path to the white bridge. At this point it got very eerie as the graveyard was to your right and you could get to the black bridge by taking a righthand path past the graves.
Once over the white bridge the path was protected by iron railings on both sides.
Facing down the path if you looked left all you saw were the black heaps of power station residue silhouetted in the moonlight and looking to your right were all the resting places of the dead, their final homes marked by the overgrown stones that bear the names of the long forgotten.
The path zigzagged so you could not see the end and your nerves were seriously tested.
If hammer house of horrors ever needed a good location then this was it.
Once you got to the end you could follow the don to the bridge below the scrapyard and then you were back on the road and in 5 mins you were on penistone road feeling mighty cocky because you made it.
My daughter is 34yrs old and she can remember me carrying her on my shoulders through the path.
Happy days eh !!!

The house at 81 Musgrave road that I was born in has always been in our family since it was built and was sold 2yrs ago when my mother Emily died a few years after my dad Les, I have lived on the Shirecliffe for all but 2yrs of my life, 21yrs on Musgrave and the rest (30+) on Miles road.
On musgrave rd those I have known/know past and present are :-
Mrs Cheetham no.83 ,, The Howarths,,The Bullivants...The Thompsons.... Joan & Ralph Mitchell + son darren & daughter susan who was tragically killed in an accident involving a bus on shirecliffe road.
Raymond,Stuart & Philip Parker (Philip sadly died a few years ago) their mum still lives on Musgrave rd.

Troy Duckworth ... lives next to my mothers old house and we have been friends a long time.

George Lymer & Wife Had 2 sons george & paul & a daughter called Margaret... George passed away some years ago & I knew him all my life, he was a class 1 driver and could turn you the longest artic round on a sixpence, he was one of the nicest people I have ever met, as kids when it snowed heavy he would attempt to get the lorry up miles rd and we would try to help by throwing ashes onto the road. In thos days he used to park it up outside his house (you have a job finding room to park a car these days !!) but it would usually end by him giving up and parking it outside our house on musgrave road. George loved to be with his mates in the timbers and I,m proud to say I,ve shared many an hour in his company and on the Timbertop fishing matches.

Thanks for the comments. If you followed the link to the website you will have seen what killed gordon...what a waste !!.
You and Jose do crop up from time to time when we are talking about old times,we were happy when you got it and sad when you left, the place is going down hill fast and if it stays open another year we will be suprised.
They have just put the drinks up 10p a pint and the stella that I drank went up 20p which they can now shove where the sun don't shine
They are cutting their own throats.
I will double check on friday about gud and the pub.

I used to knock around with Jack Siddall, I think he was the eldest boy.

its live uns I used to worry about,do you rember the grave which was dug up and bits hung off trees and coppers coming to school asking questions,if you ever looked at the graves there are some well known people in there,I know its sad but me and a few friends sometimes go for a look round. The bridge across the river has gone, washed away inthe2007 flood,so has the white bridge they are pinching our memories.

I remember the cops coming to school between 1955-58 because kids had been stealing stuff from graves that had subsided, some people in that graveyard had been buried with all their possesions, I remember a kid getting something that looked like an old roman helmet amongst other things.
It's a shame that the bridges have now gone, we used to have some fun down on the Don, it was great fun on the black bridge when the steam engines went under too.
Do you remember the school cross country run, down to the Wednesday ground, along the side of the Don, over the White bridge and then up the hill on the meadows back to the school, I didn't go to Shirecliffe school until I was 12 & I came 3rd in the whole school on the cross country when they had the annual sports day, all that runs these days is my nose.

Ey Up Broughts
just spoke to our Rob (Bob Smith) and he remembers you well, Pete Green used to come to our house often.I'm 9yrs older than our Rob so I was at work while he was at school but he often wagged it and came to our flat on Barnsley rd.

I think we all did from time to time buller, old Herman's stick was as thick as a broom handle, and he used to love giving punishment, some of the women teachers used to send us to him for the cane as they didn't like to do it themselves.
Went for a virtual tour of the Shirecliffe & the city centre on the Google street thing today, it's a lot different in places to what I knew, even got lost a few times, :hihi:

This thread has made me think of some of the people I knew from the Shirecliffe in the 50's and what they got up to, unfortunately I can't put the memories on here, they may have finally got their act together.

Happy days eh !!!

it was the most daunting place for us 8 year olds,we would push one another towards those railings and take it in turns to reach each corner...boy was it scary....sometimes we'd lose our bottle and take the safe option of penistone then herries road before scrounging a bottle of pop and bag of crisps off my nan in the arches....then at closing time a hot bag of chips with scraps and salt and vinegar.....very happy days

I didn't know that they had a son called Jeremy. They had two little girls but one died when she was only a baby. The other ones name was Kim I think but I'm not sure.

Hey TFishcake - are you still there? I now have several Shirecliffe school photos that I'm sure Jose would like to see - plus she may be able to help in identifying a few of the people on them. How can I e-mail the pics to you? Is there any way you can provide me with your e-mail address (is it safe to give your actual e-mail address on this forum?).

Oh tell me about it, baby!
One of the reasons I moved from Culver City to Tennessee was to see the seasons change, for goodness sake!
I went to SD once for a Smooth Jazz concert one Sunday. One of the clarinet players invited me, and it was great but SD is so HOT!
2 hours up the I5 and LA seemed a different world.....
Tennessee 's climate is beautiful, hot summers, frosty winters, but right now in Fall is my favorite time.:D

San Diego is a beautiful city to live but I am considering trying something new.....was thinkin about Arlington TX or Charleston SC.

TN certainly is somewhat humid in summer, like all the South, but not as bad as FL! This is as far north as I would want to live for sure.
Nashville is quiet after LA, but the clubs and honky tonks are legendary. Music City USA ....I love it!:love::love:

So, what do you miss most about living in England?....for me, its the food, the Blades but most of all I miss the people..the sense of humour that seems to go right over the head of my friends here.

My grandad was Fred (who as you correctly say was a postman) and my gran Edith worked in the 'naughty boys home' - not sure where that was but i always got threatened with been sent there if i misbehaved as a child :)

Malc lives up Chapeltown now.
The naughty boys home was the large house on the left. at the top of Cooks Wood Rd, end of Shirecliffe Rd.

Hi stockers
I went to school with Derick Scott who lived in the crescent I remember him well, did'nt know he was in oz,I took the morning and evening newspapers round the cres in 1955 to 57 Ithink Derick had a mate at the top called Barry Twigg.

Derek moved to Oz before i was born (1977), i've been over there a few times to see him and the family all still keep in contact with him. I think he's been over there about 35yrs now, he moved over when it was £10 a flight.

He lives in Brisbane, nice house by close to the beach, no kids, just loves his fishing and his XXXX :) - you can take the lad out of Sheffield eh!!

Hi,
I was at Shireciffe with some of the names on your list.
When will you be going to the Carbrook next?
Hope to see you all there soon.
Regards
Reg Parker

Hi eastbank
Yes Glen Fearn,
You wrote two books .and a third on its way? that,s tops that mate.
I was born on Donavon road ,then moved onto herries road 100m up from the Five Archers, but later moved to Foxhill and still went to school at shirecliff.I was in the year below you at school so didn,t see you in the senier school,
You mentioned Cob in an earlier thread, i saw him a few years after we left he was recovering from a broken neck.
My old pal Ian Boot moved to Foxhill about the same ,my sister saw his brother a couple of years ago i was stunned to find Ian was no longer with us.
I still seem to come across Steve Canter from time to time.
Anyway i have finaly scanned the photo onto the computer(the scanner just didn.t want to play for whatever reason)
Not sure how to put it on the website ,but i,ve just realised your email add is on the site(marks out of 10 for observation skills 2)
I have a couple more photos in the senier school team but you must have left then, but you will know all the lads.I came across the old photos in my parents loft whil i was working on their kitchen lights.
plees egscews minur speling mistakes, let me know if you get the photo,

Hi there. Does anyone remember the very big house on Shirecliffe Road(I think) which had some modern houses built in their front garden. When I was young it appeared to be a mansion. I think there were three of them. The last time I went up to look it had massive electrically operated gates on. I had a relative renting this property in the 1950's and swear it was haunted.

The Wroblewski's used to live in one of the big houses there, i used to play with the kids when younger in the mid sixties, was a massive house with large cellars, quite spooky.

It would have been round about 1958 when I used to visit, and I have no doubt at all that it was haunted. There were three cellars running in a line and at the end were three stone steps which had been sealed off. This seemed to end in one of the sitting rooms, and this room was very strange in that each morning when Margaret got up the sofa had been moved from the wall and the fingers were off the clock. Two couples shared the house and although there were two children, baby cries were heard coming from the same room when the children had been taken out. The family's three boxer dogs would never enter this same room. There was a banquet hall and a front room with a grand piano and still loads of room. Wonder if the people living there now have experienced anything strange.

My name is Trevor P, so give my regards to Vi and Dianne when you see them, my wife came from near where Christine Mills boyfriend [Geoff] lived and they used to catch the same bus to come up to Shirecliffe.

Herries Road, (the Southey side) was considered Parson Cross. (Late 50's through 60's)

My mother Mary Powell married Jim Noble who used to drink in the Dev, but she had moved to the Longley Farm estate at that time.
My name is Trevor P, so give my regards to Vi and Dianne when you see them, my wife came from near where Christine Mills boyfriend [Geoff] lived and they used to catch the same bus to come up to Shirecliffe.
I last saw Christine when they had a shop around the Upwell St area, glad to hear she's on the mend.

what a coincidence ! your mum and jim came to our wedding reception in the dev and jim wrote us a poem about married life ! which i still have and weve been married 30 year!
i will pass your hello on to diane when i see her next

This is where we lived from 58 to when my mother moved to the Kelvin around 1971, I took this pic when I visited the UK in 92, she married Jim whilst at the Kelvin, then they moved to the Longley Farm Estate, my brother put me right about that today.

The Wroblewski's used to live in one of the big houses there, i used to play with the kids when younger in the mid sixties, was a massive house with large cellars, quite spooky.

I went to secondary school and became very friendly with one of the Wroblewski's, Jan. I also knew his brother (K)? Carl. Jan's dad used to repair Renaults at the back of the house. I went to the house many times.Jan married a lady called Jean, they ran a pub in Fowey for a while, had a daughter Amy, then emigrated to Australia.
I think the whole family went to Australia including the parents. I have since lost touch with Jan but would appreciate any further info. Thanks

I lived at 545 Herries Road 1964-72. We went to Quayles shop and used up our old pennies in the bubbly machine when decimal currency came in. I remember Tesco being built. At Shirecliffe School I remember Miss Tingle?, Miss Bee and Mrs Vernon. I had a friend called Julie Storey who lived on Penrith, Sharon Hill and Jacqueline Radford on Barrie Crescent. Next door to us was a strange doctor called Dr Weir.
