Simply look at the picture and answer the question. This is some kind of overflow in Ladybower Reservoir (gettin' goosebumpy just typing it!)

It is scary. I dont like seeing the underside of boats either.. or a piers supports
pattricia 10-04-2007, 15:54 Sure is Patty.
Why is that.? Is it because you have visions of yourself falling down it.?
msbehavin 10-04-2007, 15:54 It is scary. I dont like seeing the underside of boats either.. or a piers supports
I can't work out what it is about it. Except it seems bottomless as if it wants to suck me down. (No jokes please) :hihi:
I voted 'yes' because it reminds me of a lass I used to know in Dortmund. :gag:

SleepyHead 10-04-2007, 16:12 Where would you come out if you fell down the overflow pipe, d'ya think?
msbehavin 10-04-2007, 16:13 Still doesnt affect me at all. Do you go fishing by the way ? :D
No I don't but my dad used to - and on there as well!! He said the boats just used to stay away from it. I bet they darn well did!! I try to think what's at the bottom but I can't let my mind do it.
**wimpers**
msbehavin 10-04-2007, 16:15 Where would you come out if you fell down the overflow pipe, d'ya think?
My daughter (who is very amused by my terror) asked the same question. I haven't prepared myself mentally yet to Google the answer.
She also wanted to google aerial shots looking down the thing until I slapped her hands sharply off the keyboard..:nono:
Methinks she is relishing my uncharacteristic weakness..:suspect:
Jabberwocky 10-04-2007, 16:21 Just coming upon open water scares the dung out of me. If I suddenly meet a river or pond when Im not expecting it, it freezes me with fear. Ive seen a lot of overflows like that and yeah, they are nasty looking things arent they.

I've heard that every couple of months or so the Waterways authority & Police dredge these sluices to recover all sorts of bloated bodies in varying states of decay.
Don't know how much truth there is in it :gag:
Little_Alex 10-04-2007, 16:24 I'd be a tad unnerved if I was in that boat in the background slowly drifting towards it :help: hole and boat (http://mick-armitage.staff.shef.ac.uk/photoalb/3d-lady2.jpg)
msbehavin 10-04-2007, 16:29 Crikey, I'm on some sort of terror-fest now googling all kinds of horror from sites about dam engineering.
Seems its officially called a 'shaft spillway'. The braver ones amongst you can google that on images and peer down one. I was just looking at the corner of the screen through my fingers when the dog barked :o nearly jumped out of my skin!
When I was a youngster, that used to be one of the places we would go for a "run out." of a weekend....
Always fascinated me and can't say I was ever scared to be honest. Mind you, either mom or dad would be holding on to my hand quite tightly all the time til we got back in the car.:)
I think Gangan had a picture of it as an avatar a while back too. Love it:thumbsup:
It would be much scarier if you were floating towards it in a little boat.
msbehavin 10-04-2007, 16:51 It would be much scarier if you were floating towards it in a little boat.
Aint never gonna happen. I won't even go on that reservoir in a boat. Don't get asked to do so a lot, as it happens...:D
But. If I did. And my boat was being deliberately :suspect: or accidentally :o steered towards that...that 'thing' then my only choice would be to jump ship and breast stroke for my little life as far away from it as possible.
See, now I'm having disturbing mental images of me swimming wildly away and the thing sucking me slowly towards it...:gag:

rubydazzler 10-04-2007, 18:33 Where on earth do they keep the plug for it .... :suspect:
muddycoffee 10-04-2007, 18:33 That's just the overflow.
What is more worrying is the main exit sluices deep underwater. The reason you are not supposed to swim or paddle in a reservoir is because the suck from these is powerful to pull your legs off.
And you know that island in the middle, it is a float and it stays around there because of long chains anchoring it there. If you landed there on a parachute you would be stuck there for ever.
I got me toe stuck in that hole when i were a nipper it didnt half chaff:hihi:
I have absolutely no idea why but I really dont like that at all!
I dont know if its the look of it or the thought of what might be down there, or even the thought of drifting towards it.
Ive not a clue why I find it so disturbing
I think it's cool....it'd be awesome going down there and coming out the other end :D Just like a big water slide!
OH.MY.GOD.
I hate plug holes on baths, but this....
*recoils in horror*
I have absolutely no idea why but I really dont like that at all!

Its the fear of being sucked down, feet first, into your worst nightmare (whilst gasping for air and slowly drowning)
Hope that helps
I don't like that thing either. You'd think it would be roped off or something. What if someone came up on that in the dark and didn't know it was there?
:) Sierra
I saw on old movie years ago where a plane went down in the ocean, the pilot swam like mad to get to top, instead he was swimming downwards, they say when your that deep you can't tell which way is up! now THAT would be scarey to me.
Just coming upon open water scares the dung out of me.
Dangerous activity in a small boat, Jabs.......:hihi:
I don't like that thing either. You'd think it would be roped off or something. What if someone came up on that in the dark and didn't know it was there?

Like JC perhaps, out for a midnight stroll on the water?
I hope you lot remember this the next time you find a spider in the bath and decide to flush it down the plug hole. ;)
Like JC perhaps, out for a midnight stroll on the water?
Not till those holes have healed over, he won't be.
Like JC perhaps, out for a midnight stroll on the water?
Well, you know, if they came up on it in a boat. Surely there must be warning signs or buoys or something to indicate it's there? Where does all that water go, anyway?
:) Sierra
that is some scary s***:|
its like boats especially big fishing boats i cant even look at them!...and if there sinking....god im getting shudders just typing it:gag:
also terrified of escaltors but thats another matter:hihi: :loopy:
SpeedwayDan 10-04-2007, 22:12 yeah they are a bit freaky, it's weird, i love the sea, but if i see a massive calm lake, especially in the dark it always feels eerie.
Swimming in really deep water is freaky too, i hate that
King Rat 10-04-2007, 22:29 If people find this scary I wonder if this is the reason why the Hole In the Road was filled in?

msbehavin 10-04-2007, 22:33 If people find this scary I wonder if this is the reason why the Hole In the Road was filled in?
It's the combination of engineering and water methinks. I'm ok with any expanse of natural water but not anything 'built' like this.
I fear more of disposing of the big ass spider that might come out of it,would definately let one you heroes get that aided we news paper n a jam jar:gag:
pattricia 10-04-2007, 22:43 I think it the kind of "ridges" on the spiral, that hypnotise you and draw you into it.
Kristian 10-04-2007, 22:52 They are absolutely horrific. :gag:
I have a phobia of large expanses of still water, but knowing they're in the middle makes it all the worse. :help:
drinkingman 10-04-2007, 22:56 It scares the s**t out of me!
I wonder which way round the water goes at the bottom? Clockwise or anti-clockwise?
mr craig 10-04-2007, 23:00 It could be a lot worse folks! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHol4ICeDoo)

You and I have much in common.

There's a place in Leeds that I suggest you avoid at all cost, Granary Wharf. To get there you have to go through a hellish tunnel then cross a bridge where water is cascading down through arches alongside you. I had a serious 'moment' there.
Its the fear of being sucked down, feet first, into your worst nightmare (whilst gasping for air and slowly drowning)
Hope that helps
So thats why it disturbs me so! Thhhaaaaannnkkss!! That helps sooooo much (I dont think!) :hihi:

It's not a boat in the background - it's an man-made islandy-type thing.
Driving past about ten years ago I told my wife it was where Fred did his weather report from for This Morning...... and found out about six months later that she totally believed me!

SleepyHead 12-04-2007, 08:02 My daughter (who is very amused by my terror) asked the same question. I haven't prepared myself mentally yet to Google the answer.

I'd love to be lowered over the edge just because I've always wondered what it's like down there, but I suppose an aerial photo would do in lieu of the actual experience.
Of course my fear says: "Ah yes, but the rope would break leaving you stranded at the bottom as thousands of tons of slimy water cascaded over the lip washing you to oblivion in a tide of sludge."
*gulp*
*EDIT*
I had a look on maps.google.co.uk for an aerial view, but it seems they took the satellite photos on one of those unusual occasions when the resevoir had some water in it.

So, does anyone else think that they'd like to try walking down it during times of drought, llike walking down a flight of steps?
How horrific if you were halfway down and then there was a cloudburst and the dam filled up again ...
But, the temptation to get into the water and slowly drift towards it ... like a man made maelstrom really, isn't it ... terrifying and yet strangely alluring at the same time :help:
charlie9865 12-04-2007, 09:07 Im sooo freaked out i wont look at ladybower in same way again.I hate the thought of being sucked down that thing.eeeek.I have visions of bodys being dragged out all blue and green mouldy looking.yuk yuk yuk.
BasilRathbon 12-04-2007, 10:20 Big holes are always scary.
Mr Goose 12-04-2007, 10:51 Sadly, I have a very unhappy story to tell about the big overflow holes.
Last year I took the three offspring on a walk round ladybower...
When we go to the bit of the wall closest to the left hand overflow hole (looking from the dam) we saw a crowd staring at something. It was a mother duck and several ducklings.
As the crowd "ahhhh'd" at the duckings - but then a sudden calimity happened - one of the duckings was sucked down the big overflow hole - there was much wailing from many of the kids watching. :(
Blimey MsB! That certainly is one scarey hole you've found there! :o It looks like it could be the lair of some awful beast, or it might simply draw in unsuspecting passers by and crush and mash them to death. :gag:
I don't like it.
TheRedWizard 12-04-2007, 21:01 http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w143/RedWizardThe/Bighole.jpg
It's just as scary without the water........eugh.
Ivor&Mel 12-04-2007, 21:40 However scary it is, I think it's a magnificent piece of engineering! Do all reservoirs have such a feature??
rubydazzler 12-04-2007, 21:47 but then a sudden calimity happened - one of the duckings was sucked down the big overflow hole :(
Did it bob round and round like a rubber ducky when you let the water out of the bath? Or did it just get sucked down straightaway?
I'm quite ghoulish really, aren't I? Sorry :help:
Looks kinda creepy!!
Who knows whats @ the bottom of it :D
whitehorses 09-11-2007, 19:56 Msbehavin, I have to tell you that I find those pics scary, but for me thereis a reason why.A few years ago I had a recurring dream about that particular stretch of water. It was in a drought situation, so the holes were empty of water, I went in them with some people and it all seemed quite normal, steps leading down etc. When I got to the bottom there was a whole city made of sandstone pillars and ledges(Nothing like the village that is under a reservoir)It was like being at a Roman building, but all really well maintained. For some reason we had been taken down there as part of some research plan, and I knew that at some stage the water would come rushing in, and I'd be running away from the rising tide of it.It was a dream but it still gives me the creeps years later!
I think it's absolutely beautiful - but I've always been fascinated by moving water!
..... Where does it go?
Into the deepest pit of hell by the looks of it :gag::gag:
msbehavin 12-04-2008, 10:17 Thought I'd resurrect this thread to say that recently, in a moment of bravado and lets-see-if-we-can-cure-this I did go to the reservoir, parked up near the wall then walked round and looked over at it. Still did no good. It's creepy. I literally had to inch my way bit by bit towards the wall to peer over then jumped back. Repeated a few times till could look for a nanosecond longer but stll not comfortably. Strange, irrational and as yet I still haven't come up with a valid reason why, but looking through this thread again at the pictures I know that even confronting my fears by making myself look at it 'for real' hasn't exorcised the inexplicable dislike I have of the 'thing' !!
Don_Kiddick 12-04-2008, 10:28 It could be a lot worse folks! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHol4ICeDoo)
:o :wow: :o
Dear Lord above!
It used to scare me a bit as a child, as someone (think it was a ranger - oooh they are an evil lot;)) told me it was full of boggerts that lived in the centre of the earth and ate on small children that got too close. I now work there and went in last week and all I found was Hobbits and Fauns
