View Full Version : Sheffield Football Clubs to merge?

rad1

Due to the current mediocrity of both Sheffield football clubs and the continuing lack of success in terms of silverware isnt it about time that Sheffield, being Englands 4th largest city, started to have the capacity to compete on the European stage similar to Manchester United and Liverpool? As an outsider i think the best way forward would be for the 2 clubs to merge, play at Don Valley Stadium and for the existing stadia to be sold and for the money generated to be used to attract players of the calibre of gerrard, ronaldo etc etc. I suggest the name of Sheffield City. Please discuss

Hypothetically speaking though, what would the sell of price of both Bramall Lane and Hillsborough accumulate? This would surely mean upwards of £90m?

Surely as an outsider i can see it from a more balanced point of view ie from outside the box rather than a passionate biased subjective point of view. how about the sheffield dons as a name if you dont like sheffield city?

Football supporters tend not to listen to balanced points of view.

fair point. maybe that has been the downfall of 2 such great clubs. still think that with the sale of the grounds you could finance some very good players and thereby compete with the top clubs. successs breed success

If you're gonna merge the teams then you need to merge the team name and colours too. How about Wednesday United with a blue, red and white strip?

Doesn't Birmingham only have 1 club? Unless your counting Wolves.

To be honest, I think there would be no reason to merge. Both clubs seem to be on their way back up to playing good football (albeit slowly if United get relegated). And creating one club by merging them would instead create one mediocre club with a one off (small) cash boost.

BasilRathbon
10-04-2007, 15:16
There used to be separate clubs in the Northamptonshire towns of Rushden and Diamonds, but they managed to merge successfully. Likewise Dagenham and Redbridge - why should Sheffield's clubs be any different?

Little_Alex
10-04-2007, 15:16
It is possible that it will happen one day, especially the way the game is going ie edging towards a super league of some description.
I think it's a long way off though and both sets of supporters are too proud and attached to their club to accept such an idea as easily as you address it rad1. How long have you lived in sunny Sheff? :)

ash. i agree. you would need to spend some of the money generate for the ground sales to upgrade don valley to 50'000+. the stadium and infrastructure is already there so it would cost that much. with sheffield now being at the forefront of uks music scene i think the 2 football clubs are an embarassment.

I agree, neither of us are at their peaks, but getting closer to what needed nowadays to be a top tier side. We [blades] just need to survive this season, and we could well establish ourselves as a regular premiership side,(though doubtful ever a big one) and the Wendies I can see going up next season.

Even if Sheffield had one club, we would never attract the money that Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea get. (as a brand name).

So an established premiership side is best we can both hope for.

have taken into account the fact the you are a self-confessed outsider, and am wording my post accordingly.

while ever owls fans & blades fans have holes in their A**E'S ,would they ever attend a debacle such as you suggest

perhaps S.W.F.C. & S.U.F.C are as you claim ,mediocre, but that said both sides of Sheffields football divide love their resective teams with a passion and vigour the likes of mufc and liverpool would never match if they were in our local teams position. owls and blades fans at least come from the local areas.

when wednesday went to cardiff arms park for the 2004/05 play-off final against hartlepool, 40,000 + owls fans made the trip. a trip i doubt any of them would have made for an amalgamated sheffield city fc, ditto the blades following.

both our local sides have had their share of glories , both sides having tasted european football in the not too distant past and i'm sure they will do again.

by all means make your suggestion but don't be too surprised if the owls & blade fans on sf don't take seriously.

with all the due respect that a thread of this nature deserves, your historical reference is totally erroneous, as ' the wednesday football club' ( later to become known as sheffield wednesday football club) was founded on the 4th september 1867,by members of 'the wednesday cricket club' in order for them to take part in sporting activties during the winter months.

'the wednesday' as they were known then ,won their first trophy the ' cromwell cup' on the 15/2/1868, beating ' the garrick club' 1-0 after extra time at bramall lane.

the amalgamation to which you refer is not actually correct at all, as it never happened.:hihi: :hihi:

United and wednesday don't do what Manure do, and put out a new kit every couple of hours, just to screw more money out of the mugs who buy their replica kits....

Manure charge a small fortune for their season tickets, unlike teams like Weds and Utd.

Those clubs may have been going for donkeys years, but, it's their branding that has earned them a lot of money. My nephew was a man u "supporter", but it wasn't real "fan-dom" it was glory hunting. Pure and simple.

I stand by my comment. Man u and the like have had shedloads of money chucked at them. I defy any team to do poorly, when they have the sort of backing those teams had.

How do you confuse a Man U fan, BTW?

Show them a map of Manchester!

I remember watching a prem' match a couple of years back, where man U were in london, vs one of the london teams, Chelski, Arsenal, or whoever, and the home fans had me in stitches.

they were chanting, from the home end, at the man u fans:-

"You only live round the corner, live round the corner"

"You;ll be home in five minutes, Home in five minutes!"

Aston Villa and West Bromwich and Walsall were in Birmingham the last time I checked.

I'm sure there should be a full stop in there somewhere. Perhaps things like punctuation will be covered next term. Spelling's not bad though, so no detention this time my young lad.
As for United, well I really thought they'd be up for a battle, but it seems like the others have more bottle at the moment. And the number of strikers that Warnock's bought this season you'd have thought he'd have more than one who can score.
Do you want to borrow one of ours till the end of the season ? All it would take is a begging letter from Brampork Lane to Sheffield 6.

Who pays for the Don Valley Stadium if the asset's of both clubs asset's are used to attract better quality players?
Some people are not at all interested in where football is played but I would suggest that they would object to a free hand out to a private limited company.

Yep. Perhaps people who want to support Sheffield should go and watch Sheffield FC. According to the Star they got promoted and now in Unibond 1st. I think that's only a few promotions below the league.

If they managed to get in the league, they could use Don Valley.

Trophyman, you're quite correct in everything you say, but it's a wasted argument, as the juvenile poster's no idea of a constructive discussion. He's merely filling in time between The Tweenies and The Teletubbies, by writing drivel on the Forum. His grammar, spelling, and thinking that every word has to start with a capital letter, (despite being told several times) confirm that his age and IQ are the same figure. Funny thing is though United seem to sign players what no-one had heard of ie Nade,Shelton,Stephen Quinn, the thing Wigan have suffered with is drawing players to the jjb.
As will United the only players you will be able to attract are players coming to the end of there career like brum have with andy cole and man utd did with Larson.
Or gambles on players who your not even sure can even cut it at being fit.
They always say its the second season in the prem which prooves if a team can cut it.
Look at west ham, west brom, maybe wigan thats if you do stay up by the way but it looks like you will with your run in.

Of course!, isn't this is what football is about when you don't have Abramorich type directors?

With our budget, and the size of us, compared to some of the prem big boys, I'm quite happy with Nade and Squinny. I think they've been excellent this season. Not seen enough of Shelton yet.

Pointing out that we take cheap risks with unknowns, seems a bit strange from a wendy, look where going for the 'paying players £6million a week' option left you lot (and Bradford and L**ds, and Barnsley)??
They always say its the second season in the prem which prooves if a team can cut it.

No comment until we're mathmatically safe. But you're right, the second season is a bit like where the honeymoon period is over.

Should we have another go, then we shall have to take some more chances with some newbies or has beens. Depends on how much £££ we get, and what it's worth.
