Have you ever slept in a bed at an hotel or boarding house?

If you can please buy a new mattress. Mattresses should be changed every 5yrs and a good mattress will help keep your spine nice and healthy. Don't be afraid to bounce about on them in shops cos' you have to get one than it is good for you.

That seems a bit harsh to me.
I'm sure that anyone who is selling a double bed will only be selling it because it is too good to tip! A friend of mine gave one away recently which was only slept in once for the simple reason it was in the spare bedroom, so not all second hand mattresses need to be:gag:

Most charities etc won't take a mattress once it's been removed from the protective wrapper. Whether you tell them it's been slept on or not. Mattresses are pretty unhygenic things - one of the main reasons I HATE staying away from home.

People are so germ-phobic these days. Sleeping on a secondhand matress is not going to kill you! It's covered with a sheet, isn't it?

Anyway, to get back to the OP's question (cos I'm sure s/he doesn't want us all discussing his or hygiene), how about ebay? You can do a search within so many miles of your own postcode. Failing that, there's a buy and sell section on this forum, there's one in the Star and there's those papers dedicated to classified ads (don't know what it's called here, it's called the Loot in Liverpool).

Or there is a shop called Bedzone on Queens Road which is really cheap, and a cheap bed shop at the top of London Road, next to the bridal shop and the Pulse and Cocktails sex shop. May be worth looking at them - a new one may end up costing the same as a second-hand one and then the folk of SF can sleep easily knowing you're not getting bitten to death by someone else's bedbugs :-)

I'm not sure as to where to buy one sorry, but if you do buy a second hand mattress, iron it on full steam all over.. The steam will penetrate down and kill any nasties that may be there..
Oh and fill it with that smelly water stuff that you can buy for your iron..
I do this to my own mattress from time to time to keep it a bit fresher..

How much value do mattresses lose?
Say after 1,2,3,4 years. Free after 5?
Say a £200 mattress after 1 year.

It will take more than a sheet (except for a rubber one) to stop urine and sweat seeping through onto the mattress.

I've got a double bed you can have FOC, It's not the most stylish of things and you'd have to arrange for collection from Hillsborough but you're welcome to it for nowt.

I sold a double bed on the forum For Sale recently. It was our spare bed, rarely used. Sold it to someone for a spare bed to use seldomly. They paid £20 and came for it. We got rid of it and felt it was going to a good home as it seemed to good to throw away. Win Win for all. If you are that worried you can have it professionally cleaned. Suggest those of you who will only sleep in a new bed never go on holiday, or into hospital, or leave their own house again ;-)

We got one from Argos, with free delivery, about 4 years ago, still fine and cost us around £150.

You could probably get a frame from St Lukes on Crookes (if it's still there) and possibly pick up a mattress, although unsure how much they may cost. Certainly there used to be a fair few places on South Road, and I'm sure they deliver, but used to think that they could be a little expensive.

The ultimate short term solution is a electric pumb up mattress from Costco/Makro etc, only cost £30 and when we slept on it when my parents were over, it was really comfortable.....not a long term solution I know, but cheap and comfy!!!

This is rather silly - everyone accepts that when they go on holiday or in hospital you are sleeping in a bed that someone else has slept in, made love and even died in - however, as far as my own bed at home is concerned, I would choose to sleep on a mattress that I know the history of !
