I had a supervisor at work who I despised. He was so arrogant and always used to push me around. As he was a supervisor there was not really a lot I could do about it apart from give him an "I don't give a **** what you tell me" attitude.

Love 'em or hate 'em we all have them. What bugs you about your workmates
( enemies )? Are you bullied, ignored, put upon or do you treat them badly?

I hate some of my colleagues snobbery, self-righteousness and ignorance.

I could go on but I'll let you lot have your say.

I love all my colleagues. We are all like-minded, and get on extrememly well. We also choose to spend alot of social time together and all know each others families. Because of the nature of our business we can sometimes have to spend almost a whole week together, night and day, so it's really important to get along well.

The staff at my last company (a third-rate publishing outfit in Leeds) were the kind of ignorant, greedy, selfish, lazy, thick, ugly, foul-smelling idiots who give the North a bad name.

I wondered why all the ladies at that place fancied me (not that I ever discouraged it of course :heyhey: ) until we had a staff outing togther - their husbands were a right bunch of slobs :gag:

But! That was many years ago.

I'm fortunate enough to work for a company with a friendly, open atmosphere and it's such a relief not to dread coming in to work (and not having to face the daily commute to Leeds and back).

If you're going to spend most of your life at work, you might as well enjoy the work you do and those you do it with :)

I agree with you - I do enjoy my work but not the company of some of my colleagues. I suppose it's a bit like the saying 'you can chose your friends but not your family' - this could be changed to workmates.

Love all my collegues, salt of the earth... apart from one who is scum of the earth, but he's left now so no problem :)

...still cant wait to finish :) only about 8/9 months lefts then away we go, finish uni hopefully with a degree and may attempt to get a better full-time job, instead of bein a scrounging part-timer :) :P

There are only 15 staff at my workplace, and as far as i'm concerned that is about 10 too many!. Most of the people at my workplace act like best mates then slag each other off as soon as their backs are turned.
I do'nt have time for people like that!
This could be the reason for people not staying long?

The staff at the University I teach for are generally fine, well-adjusted, humorous types. Basically, good sticks. When I worked in Banking 1978-1992, for the then Midland Bank in Sheffield, I would honestly say that most of my clerical colleagues were Grade A ******s. Thank God I escaped. They were petty, boring, and incurious with few exceptions. Then again, Banking seems to attract such types; mediocre plodders who would turn a blind eye if the Management announced they were going to execute the cleaners in the car park. Most of the silly ******** are redundant now.

I'm self employed, and employ one other person part time.
The best thing about self employment:
No factory/office walls hemming me in - no office politics or having to get on with colleagues who are prats, etc.
I have only ever had one customer with a snotty bad attitude to me (for no cause other than she wanted to be that way)
AND GUESS WHAT - I had the luxury of politlely saying 'I maybe clearing away your rubbish, but I wiil not be treated like rubbish'
and of I went - I really needed the money too, but just the feeling that I did not have to put up with s**t and could walk away from it, I can't describe.

Worst part of self employment: Don't get paid when on holiday, and of course you are losing money on the work you have missed, so by the time you get back you really have to catch up.
I ramble;)

Colleagues? erm.... what colleagues... ?

Self employed, work from home... so the worst I have to put up with is the cat sitting in front of my keyboard in a "feed me or you don't get anything done" communicative strategy...

To be honest though I actually miss working with people, it gets awful lonely and when you start talking to the wall... oh dear... :loopy:

I suppose I am very lucky in that I get on with most of the people I work with. We have the odd night out and any friction from work is left at work.

The politics can be draining though. We have whole departments at war with others and even within themselves!
I try to avoid it whenever possible and stay in my office out of the way.

For a while in the 90s I worked as an office temp, and had an assignment at the above organisation. Can second everything you say about clerical 'colleagues'. Every day I was literally counting down the minutes until escape time.

I found very similar sorts of people at insurance companies - but the worst 'fellow workers' by far were to be found in law firms. In one office the entire conversational repertoire seemed to consist of discussing (in minute detail) what had been eaten for breakfast, what would be eaten/had been eaten for lunch, and what was going to be eaten for dinner. This was sort-of-ok on Day 1 and mildly irritating on Day 2, but after a fortnight I was about ready to knaw(?) my own arm off!

And some female solicitors - so unpleasant and downright rude.

Such a difference from the architectural practice where I worked for some years - really lovely people, for the most part. Lots of interesting and stimulating conversations with people who clearly enjoyed their work and were happy to be there. I actually looked forward to going in to work !!!!

Give me creative types to work with every time. Please !!!! :)

I work as an IT contractor which means that I move between organisations every couple of years (or more frequently with shorter contracts).

Apart from the IT skills, I've been told by recruitment agencies that good people skills are needed to be successful....and they're right.

I've had some really good workmates and friends from the job, but have also met some people who were less brilliant. There was the guy who behaved like Gordon Britass....the senior manager who attempted to bribe me to get some information about another organisation....the chap with really bad BO that I ended up sat next to....the guy who was running an insurance fraud from his desk in a bank.....the accountant with the 1970s kipper ties and brown suits.....the techie running illegal raves using the company's equipment.....

I guess after 22 years it's inevitable.

Joe

By the sounds of it I'm lucky in that I work with some good people (as with all things there are some awful exceptions). One of the reasons I like my job is cos alot of the staff are good, honest and decent folk and its good to mix with them and we have a laugh now and again.

I've worked in places where I've not got on with colleagues and was soooo pleased to leave...if you're not careful it can be quite soul-destroying day in/day out and I just had to get away.

Although Martin (see above post) sometimes I like working at home with just my cats for company - they can be much more attentive although just as noisy!

Thank you so much for your lovely posting, Timo.

I'm really glad you're happy in your work now. Being unhappy at work can be soul-destroying - it's SO important to be content in what you're doing.

As of now, I still haven't found my ideal occupation, but am planning to return to uni next year. And hopefully I'll find myself working alongside creative, intelligent people again! I'm looking forward to it!

Many thanks again for your posting.

Starsparkle, it's a pleasure. Go back to Uni, work hard, network well and make your dream come true. I went "back to school" in the early 90s, did A levels, a Degree, a Masters Degree and got into my dream career- lecturing. Now, I teach, publish and have nearly got my Doctorate. The dark days of office boredom and disenchantment seem like another lifetime away. I was lucky; my wife supported me 100%, and I got the breaks from wonderful people. I hope that luck is on your side too. Make it happen, kid.

Cheers, Timo, for your inspirational posting - I really appreciate it, thank you.

I'm trying to start afresh in my work life at the moment (and am desperately seeking inspiration! - still trying to decide what uni course to apply to), so it's really good to see that it IS possible to turn your worklife around, and find a new career that can make you really happy.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

And Good Luck with your Doctorate!

This is an old one, but at the time it got right under my ruddy skin!

I was working at the Sheffield branch of a major booksellers over the festive period and as usual things were manic and all the staff were run off their feet.

Most of the day I'd been working as one of the till monkeys on a chequeout that had two tills. One was up front and clearly visible, the second was round the back and out of direct sight.

Now guess which one I was on?

Around lunchtime we had a massive rush and I ended up with a queue of more than twenty shoppers, all in a hurry and all getting more and more impatient.

I glanced over my shoulder and noticed that my colleague on the more secluded till had three people in her queue, so I asked if I could send some of the shoppers from my queue round to hers.

"For God's sake," she shouted "you have to serve some customers you know!"

A little taken aback at her response I tried to confront her about the incident at a later date hoping to find out whether there was a logical expalnation for the outburst.

I managed to get out the words: "I'm sorry about that..." when I had been hoping to add "but what on earth were you going on about?" Only to have her blurt out: "It's okay, I don't want to talk about it." As if the whole thing were a fault on my part!:loopy:

A mate of mine threw the monitor of his pc at a guy from IT after he confessed there was nothing more he could do to fix the computer than reboot it and keep his fingers crossed.

I'd suggest you follow his example as the average office stapler isn't too satisfying as a bludgeon!

I work with someone who constantly lies about everything, from the size of her house (i know where she lives) to the area (making it a lot posher, see above) her husbands job, her childrens jobs etc. The thing is i know she's lying but she thinks i believe everything she tells me. I'm not just being bitchy or jealous, everyone else feels the same. She often catches herself out 'cause she doesn't have as good a memory as us. I'ts a bit sad really.

I work with a woman who ends pretty much every sentence with the phrase "...or something". Even if she is stating something that is definately going to happen, she says it, for example (on the phone to a manager): "He's booked on training on Monday or something". GRRRRR - it does your head in after hearing it 30 times in one day! She even writes inarticulately!

The influence of too many pasties perhaps? ;)

The one thing that is annoying me more than anything right now is when people divert their phones without informing you and then just clear off. Then you answer the phone and you have no idea who the person wants to speak to, you tell them sorry you do not know of the person and they put the phone down only to ring you again in 30 seconds time - it's not fair on them.

Mrs Carmine works in an office environment where she's constantly harassed by tubby colleagues on diets. She's a very petit woman and for some reason this seems to make her larger coworkers think the following:

1) She has to be blackmailed into eating chocolate and biscuits to soothe thier battered egos.

2) Her petit stature is ripe for "humourous" banter, whereas you can be sure that a quip about larger women who are always on a diet and yet devour all kinds of sugary cr*p would see her labelled as insensetive.

The lift in the offices by the cathedral where she works are always breaking down...I wonder if it's the gubbins or the weight it has to carry!

I think that's really out of order, why do people go up to slimmer people and go "oooh you're so skinny!". If you ever went up to a larger woman and said "ooooh you're a bit overweight/oooh you're so fat!" you'd get a punch, at best!

That's the point!

I have a friend who's well over twenty stone in weight. He knows he has a problem and so do we, but I'd never make an issue out of it in front of him to make myself feel better. The one time Mrs Carmine heard a stranger in a pub make a crack she deliberatly waited until the next day to tell me and save the guy in question an intimate moment outside the pub with half a dozen irate blokes (and one over twenty stone).

But it seems that there are just some women out there like that.

I'm stuck at home all day every day :(

I worked full-time for 20 years and really miss my work mates. I made some fabulicious life long friends at work. I used to just try to ignore the orrble people most of the time

I can say, hand on heart, that all the people I currently work with are a great bunch, hardworking, a great laugh and we even socialise occasionally. Unfortunately I've been promoted and have to move areas in the next few weeks, so I'm going to miss them and just hope the new branch will be as good!

That said who I really dislike is the Area Manager who thankfully we only see once a week or sometimes recently a fortnight. the problem with this guy, apart from being a southerner (lol!) is that he speaks in jargon all the time. Half the stuff he's saying nobody understands, so we've now taken to pulling him up on every piece of jargon he spouts to explain himself. It really is starting to p**s him off big-style which I think why his visits have been less frequent! Thing is I suppose if we p**s him off too much, he will look to 'downsize' or 'rightsize' the branch 'human resources' (whatever that's supposed to mean:confused: !!)

Where do these people learn to speak such utter b*****ks??

I also dislike colleagues that are on a diet and spend the whole fricking day talking about everything they've ever eaten, everything they're ever likely to eat, and everything they're never eating again. I'm not kidding THE ENTIRE DAY.

It's an obsession for a lot of people. I'm sure they think that if they keep talking about diets, the pounds will miraculously drop off.

Right, I'm off to bore my colleagues for hours on end about six packs and baguette shaped penile appendages.
