I am not a member of Barclays so when I received this email I
knew it was a scam. Nevertheless it looks very
authentic with its Barclays Logo and its apparent Barclays URL. I'm
sure no-one would respond but just in case - DON'T.
The crummy spelling is also a give away!



I went to the Barclays site and it has a warning on the Home
Page, as follows:
Some customers have been receiving an email claiming to be from
Barclays advising them to follow a link to what
appear to be a Barclays web site, where they are prompted to enter
their personal Online Banking details. Barclays is in
no way involved with this email and the web site does not belong to us.
Barclays does not send emails to customers requesting security or
any other confidential information. Please do
not reply to any such emails or follow any links to web sites claiming
to be Barclays Online Banking.
If you think you've received a fraudulent email that looks like
it's from Barclays, forward the entire email
including the header and footer to internetsecurity@barclays.co.uk and
then delete it from your email account.








Dear Barclays customer,




We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your
Barclays account may have been accessed by an
unauthorized third party.Protecting the security of your account and of
the Barclays network is out primary concern.

Therefore, as a preventative measure, we have temporarily
limited access to sensitive Barclays account features.

Click the link below in order to regain access to your account:


https://ibank.barclays.co.uk/fp/1_2f/online/1,28006,logon,00.html

For more information about how to protect your account, please
visit Barclays Security Center.

Without wishing to belittle your efforts to warn people... this sort of "phishing" scam is a regular occurence now and in a nutshell, ANYTHING that proports to come from a bank can pretty much be ruled out as a scam or hoax.

The aim is always to gain a record of your account login details so that criminals can use the information to access your account.

The exact same methods are regularly tried with eBay, instant messenging clients (eg: MSN, ICQ, etc..), and basically anything that is popular and/or likely to gain access to money and/or data..


If you ever suspect there may be any substance to an email warning then you should go to the web site you have bookmarked or provided in trusted literature (eg: your welcome pack from the bank).. not any links provided in emails.

The only exception I can think of to the rule is Egg.com... but even then it's preferable to actually use your own bookmark rather than clicking on any email contained link.


In a nutshell, paranoia is a good rule of thumb when it comes to this sort of thing.

weve just been told at work that theres a new virus out - well actually an old one, but they have changed bits on it so virus scanner doesnt detect it. - dont open strange attachments

The way to detect these phishing scams is to select the link and then copy it into a word file - you'll then find that as if by magic that innocent-looking link has an extra bit on the front! The ones I get usually end in .kr which I presume is Korea.

The Association of Payment and Clearing Services (APACS) has launched a website (http://www.banksafeonline.org.uk/) to inform customers of e-banking and related services about the dangers of phishing and other types of on-line fraud.

The site contains sensible advice on protection as well as a self-test to check whether you can correctly identify fraudulent e-mails from genuine ones.

Take the test - it's not as easy as you may think.

just to clarify -

No bank will ever ask you to enter your personal information on a web site other than the existing web site you use for internet banking.

If in doubt PHONE YOUR BANK before doing anything else.

i agree, NEVER click on any links in an email purproting to be from your bank. (paypal is the latest (but they're s***, anyhow see thread

no bank will ever ask for your dtails/password in an email.
if in doubt type in the url in a new window and access your account from there.
