View Full Version : Who would like a mad passionate bohemian love affair?

Please note this is not one of my usual maudlin depressed posts, I just genuinely don't understand and am genuinely bemused. I'm also open to (genuine) offers! :hihi:

I've just watched Frida, the biopic of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Even allowing for the fact that it was a Hollywood film, I felt drab and lifeless, sanding down my woodwork with blue paint dust in my hair, no Friday night chums to paint the town red, excluded and rejected from the friendships and social groups I thought I'd made due to prejudice against mental illness and a conformist group-mentality where passion and original thinking are not welcome.

Why I can't meet anyone that wants exciting times, with an open mind and a sense of adventure, who likes a strong woman with a wealth of wisdom and experience. I get rejected for the most vanilla reasons, and it would be easy to find superficial excuses, but Frida Kahlo was an intense and disturbed cripple with a monobrow and a moustache, and she managed to draw the most noteworthy men of her day. If she could do it why can't I?

I'm an artist, with a strong will, a fascinating soul and a fiery curiosity, but when I try to find kindred spirits people treat me like some sort of uberfreak and I always seem to turn into the misfit scapegoat. I want to have a grand love affair with an amazing spirit! Where can I meet people of the same species?

Where do you go socially, what kind of things do you do with your spare time? Maybe you're not meeting the right like-minded poeple for you cos you're in the wrong places. I guess I'm lucky at uni because there are so many different ways to meet people but I joined a kind of art group and have met some fantastic interesting people that way. You can do the same elsewhere in Sheffield I'm sure (if you haven't already...)

I have found as I've got a bit older and moved on from home/college etc, certain friends drop off the radar but I see that as a blessing in disguise cos you find out who is really worth spending time and effort wth! You may not have been excluded for the reasons you've given though... It may just be that you've naturally drifted form each other. They could just be shallow people though, in which case it's worth making new friends and forgetting them.

Was it a good film though, I've always fancied watching it but never got round to it!

I agree with artisan, you need the right circle of friends so you have something in common, perhaps an advanced art class might help, fingers in as many pies as you can

Edit: Ah. Just read the OP :suspect:

Hang in there Purdy - I'm weird too, and it's what makes us special ;)
As you go through life you'll find out that people on the whole aren't worth bothering with - unless you're shallow

As you're not shallow, you'll meet alot of people who don't meet your expectations or who merely drop off along the way. It's them not you ;)

One day you'll find a bloke who can cope with it all (here's me making the assumption that it's a bloke you're hoping to fill the gap  ) and he'll be absolutely perfect forever

the basic problem is few people are truly exceptional and lucky enough to lead fascinating interesting lives.

cinema have you believe that you too should lead a fascinating interesting life. sadly very few of us are either motivated or lucky enough to manage it

The term Bohemian was first used in the nineteenth century to describe the non-traditional lifestyles of marginalized and impoverished artists, writers, musicians, and actors in major European cities. The bohemian lifestyle is often associated with cafés, coffeehouses, drug use (particularly opium), alcoholism, and absinthe. Bohemians were associated with unorthodox or antiestablishment political or social viewpoints, which were expressed through extramarital sexual relations and voluntary poverty.

Texas. That's where it all is. I was watching this TV programme about individuals swapping lives and was soooo fascinated at the girl who led an interesting musical lifestyle in Texas. She lives, breathes art, music and sensations. She swapped life with a chef who is that bit cynical, business focused and all the rest of it.

I think it's great, when life is like that. :)

Go down South! Or abroad. Aren't there like holidays retreats for artists and such likes? You may meet like-minded people that way? At least, it'll broaden your social circle and have interesting chats.

[Added] With no disrespect for the SF, but sometimes passionate posts on issues are just going to be swept up as feministic posts, and anti-men cos we don't follow the masses in our way of thinking, cos it ain't "normal". Well sod that for a rich tea biccie. :D

Don't give up Bago, there are men out there who don't follow the herd and aren't pedestrian and everyday. The interesting ones are in great demand, hard to catch and keep and almost certainly aren't sitting at a PC telling strangers what they consider to be 'normal' behaviour :D

but surely the Bohemian approach as with Frida - does involve social interludes with people already in a relationship. by the very nature of most portrayed artists their lives inevitably were not confined to the social norm.

so why not try a fling with a "married" or "unavailable" person - then we'll see how Bohemian and artistic you really are.

you know where i am..........:D

Or maybe not. She'd need to be one of the idle rich, and get on with finding a wealthy gay man to marry. If he had artistic pretensions (a writer maybe?) that would help. As would a considerable age differential. And maybe a brother who was married to a lesbian. They'd all be so depressed that she'd not be able to compete.

I'm an artist. I'm wildly eccentric. I'm unattached. I'm hetero. Like I said before, just head south.

13-04-2007, 21:47
Well I must seem very rude to all the considerate people who posted on my thread only to be abandoned by the instigator!

I had a last minute forum Easter holiday to Bohemia (at least I think that's what the B in B & Q stands for...) catching up with friends, etc etc.

I've had a right giggle at the thread, I didn't want it to be deadly serious, just a flight of fancy. I had very bohemian flings when I was young, roaming about in alternative worlds. But as you get older and root yourself to the spot by buying white goods, it's more difficult to meet genuine free spirited people who aren't already joined up with their own kind. And fewer men look in the direction of females over 30.

The trouble is there are a lot of people who look alternative or unconventional, but they are just rigid and narrow minded in a different way. Someone the other day put it very well when he said that there are many "who talk a good cappuccino" but don't walk the walk, which I thought was a great way of putting it. My single biggest disappointment of recent years is the reality of life as a (mature) art student. I thought I'd meet kindred spirits. Instead I got closed-off conservative housewives with no interest in the world.

My tutor said to meet like minds I would have to go to one of the great art schools (yes, down south). But I'm settled in my groovy little pad now so I have to make the best of it. And even people who feel that they're 'out there' turn out to have bog standard normal family lives and I just don't speak that language. I'm not sure I'll ever meet someone from my own planet. It would be nice to meet a man that doesn't resent or fear strong intelligent women. But after last night I'm feeling ridiculously, smugly happy about not being tied down.
